IN THE NIGHT: A FAUSTIAN TALE TREMENDOUSLY ENTERTAINING

Composer/lyricist Michael Mott is talented. Broadway To Vegas first reviewed his debut album Where The Sky Ends, See Broadway To Vegas column of July 6, 2014. His latest In The Light is intriguing, full bodied, sweeping and attention holding. The world premier studio cast recording has been released by Broadway Records.

In The Light, A Faustian Tale is an original musical inspired by the classic Faust legend of greed, power and lust.

As both composer and lyricist Mott has crafted an epic which is entertaining and smart with plenty of laughs and a creative use of double entendre phrases (particularly the perky Behind Closed Doors) which has lines causing the listener to pause a second, contemplating' did I really hear what I think I just heard' - and then laugh.

This world premiere recording is an emotional, luscious score capturing the tension and passion of the epic Faust legend. Featuring some of Broadway’s best vocalists and musicians including: Jeremy Jordan as “Johann Faustus”, Solea Pfeiffer as “Gretchen Wagner”, Ciara Renée as “Ana Faustus”, Antonio Cipriano as “Valentine Engel”, Bobby Conte Thornton as “The Traveler”, Anne Fraser Thomas as “Hilda”, Aisha Jackson as “Agnes”, Zachary James as “Archbishop Peter”.

The recording’s ensemble features the talents of Lynn Craig, Derrick Davis), Cooper Grodin, Jason Pintar , Lindsay Rider and Karla Shook.

All have outstanding voices.

In The Light follows Dr. Johann Faustus, (Jeremy Jordan) an astronomer, who is accused of blasphemy by the Holy Inquisition. Guided by a mysterious being called the Traveler, (Bobby Conte) he flees to the small town of Hertz. There he meets a young scholarly woman named Gretchen (Solea Pfeiffer) , who shares his goals. Gretchen believes Doctor Faustus can use the town to begin a rebellion against the Inquisition. Together, they create a plan to resist its coming and to overthrow the power of the Church. As their plot proceeds, secrets Gretchen has hidden are discovered and Johann’s ambition is undermined by his own tormented mind. The Traveler urges the two forward and their dysfunctions entangle, leading to disaster for all.

This is a joy to listen to for several reason including; it doesn't sound like one long song. Tempos and styles range from operatic to South American dance. Superior sound balancing. Neither music nor dialogue ever intrudes or dominates. Each note and word is perfectly heard and understood. An excellent example of how a recording should sound.

It also makes one curious to learn more about Faust.

Faust is the protagonist of a classic German legend, based on the historical Johann Georg Faust ( c. 1480–1540) who was trained in religion and astronomy - eventually turning to magic. Erudite Faust is highly successful yet dissatisfied with his life, which leads him to make a pact with the Devil at a crossroads, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures.

According to the official Faust site: The legend has inspired many great writers, musicians, and other artists. The earliest known published sources for the legend are the Wolfenbüttler manuscript dated about 1580-1587, and a printed chapbook (the Spies edition), intended for popular sale dated 1587. Two famous literary works on the Faust theme are Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, and Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe’s Faust.

While Goethe’s Faust has been called the definitive Faust, there is no one Faust story, instead, there are hundreds or thousands of variations on the theme in theatre, music, film, poetry, art, and literature including classics and favorites: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, The Picture of Dorian Grey, The Phantom of the Opera/Paradise, The Devil and Daniel Webster, Damn Yankees, The Little Shop of Horrors and many more.

Add In The Light to the list.

ART AND ABOUT

COMMEMORATING THE LIFE AND WORK OF PRINCE PHILIP
Prince Philip and his wife square dancing. Photo: Royal collection
Windsor Castle is hosting a special display to celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, Britain’s longest-serving consort. Over 100 objects will explore The Prince’s early life and naval career, as well as his role supporting The Queen at home and abroad.

One of the highlights of the display will be the Coronation Robe and Coronet worn by Prince Philip during The Queen’s Coronation. You’ll also be able to see objects that explore The Prince’s close associations with Windsor Castle and the local community, including his roles as Ranger of Windsor Great Park and Chair of the Restoration Committee following the 1992 fire.

Themes explored in Prince Philip: A Celebration will include The Prince’s early life and naval career, his role as consort and his support for the sovereign at home and abroad. The displays will also focus on His Royal Highness’s wide-ranging patronages and associations, including sport, science and industry, conservation and the environment, art and collecting, and encouraging younger generations.

A highlight of the display at Windsor Castle will be a section devoted to Prince Philip’s role in The Queen’s Coronation of 1953. His Royal Highness chaired the Coronation Committee, one of two committees convened to plan the event, and played a key role in the decision to broadcast parts of the service live on television. The Coronation Robe and Coronet worn by Prince Philip during the service will be on display, alongside his Chair of Estate which is usually located in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace.

Exploring similar themes to the Windsor display, the display at the Palace of Holyroodhouse will include a section charting Prince Philip’s early life and naval career. In The Prince’s Midshipman’s log book from 1940–1, he describes his role operating the ship’s searchlight during the Battle of Cape Matapan while stationed on the HMS Valiant off the coast of Greece. Another section will bring together items from his wedding to HRH The Princess Elizabeth in 1947, including the wedding invitation, order of service and wedding breakfast menu. On the occasion of their wedding, Prince Philip was granted the royal dukedom of Edinburgh and the display will look particularly at his connections to Scotland and its capital city.

On display through September 20, 2021. An addition 50 objects will be on display at Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh beginning July 23; the two separate but closely linked displays will chart significant events and achievements in The Duke of Edinburgh’s life.

last Wednesday were given a tour of the newly refurbished Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

The royal couple toured the renovated Theatre Royal Drury Lane with owner Lord Lloyd-Webber, his wife Madeline and Simon Thurley, the chairman of the Lloyd Webber Theatre Restoration Project.

During the tour Sir Andrew and Prince Charles exchanged quips. Charles asked when Frozen, a musical stage adaptation of the hit Disney film, would be able to open.

Referencing the numerous annoying setbacks resulting from the Covid pandemic, Lord Lloyd-Webber sarcastically joked: "Probably 2040," to which Charles replied: "It's what we call 'put on ice'."

In reality, Frozen will begin previews August 27 with an opening night date set for September 8. The production will star Samantha Barks as Elsa and Stephanie McKeon as Anna.

It's the type of musical which should appeal to both the grandchildren of Prince Charles and those of Camilla, as well as the offspring of Zara and Mike Tindall and her brother Peter Phillips.

Duchess Camilla, who looked cool and lovely in a green polka dot dress by Samantha Sung, with nude high heels and a Bottega Veneta bag, joined her husband for afternoon tea on the theatre's balcony - sitting next to a statue of Noel Coward, before HRH unveiled a plaque to commemorate the refurbishing.

The theatre's 60M pound make-over means the venue now boasts the largest stage in London.

The property now offers new hospitality options, including afternoon tea, a stylish cocktail bar, and an all-day dining area. The performance area has also been renovated to hold a thrust stage or performances in the round bringing the audience closer together and closer to the performer.

DID YOU KNOW THAT JEOPARDY CHAMP Zach Newkirk a Washington, D.C.-based voting rights lawyer, a six-time Jeopardy! champion in 2020, took home nearly $125,000 in winnings? He might have the most unusual winning streak in the show’s history: His run started with legendary host Alex Trebek, who died last year; got interrupted by a global pandemic; and ended with guest host Ken Jennings, a former Jeopardy! champion.

In addition to appearing on Jeopardy! last year, this Perkins Coie associate was involved with a lawsuit against then-President Donald Trump on behalf of those injured during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in Lafayette Square.

According to a profile article about him in the ABA Journal his involvement in Black Lives Matter D.C. v. Trump involved "a team at my firm wrote an amicus on behalf of civil rights leaders to show that the BLM movement was a continuation of a very long movement toward racial equality and social justice. We wrote down the experiences and perspectives of veterans of the ’60s and ’70s-era civil rights movement. I spoke to Martin Luther King III, among other leaders, and it was fascinating hearing his stories and experiences. It was humbling to be a part of something like that."

As to how he got selected for Jeopardy! he told the publication: that he "took an online quiz, and I was invited to an audition in Savannah, Georgia. That was a fun day. There were maybe 50 or 60 of us. The audition process included another written test, and then we played a mock game with a buzzer to see how quick you are, whether you can always respond in the form of a question and how telegenic you are. They give you a very broad window to be notified, like 18 months. I had sort of forgotten about it, but one day I got a phone call from Culver City, California. My clerkship had ended, I was working at my firm in D.C., and I had been calling all these random people across the country because we were looking for witnesses. Turns out, the call was from Jeopardy! That was late February, so I only had about 20 days to prepare."

Any favorite categories or least-favorite categories the ABA asked.

"Favorites are history, geography, politics. And definitely 11th Circuit election law cases! I think Jeopardy! contestants are infamously not too knowledgeable about sports, and of course, there’s the dreaded opera category. I know some sports, but there are other sports I don’t know much about, like basketball. I don’t know much more about it other than Michael Jordan was very good, but one of my good friends is “training” me on the subject." What is he doing with his winnings? "Saving for a house. Then there’s the giant black hole of law school loans."

Expect to see him on the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions.

Last Sunday both Jeopardy! and Alex Trebek received Daytime Emmy Awards.

This story was originally published in the June/July 2021 issue of the ABA Journal under the headline: “Double Jeopardy!: This voting rights advocate and game show champ is ready with the right answers.”
