HOW A EUROPEAN WAR IS AFFECTING ENTERTAINMENT

Is an escalating war in Europe affecting entertainment?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose prior political occupation was that of comedian, hasn't had a good laugh in a long time. So what are the citizens doing to cut the tension?

Despite some serious concerns, the show biz community is taking the stand of soldering forth.

While the EU is coping with a continuing war in Ukraine which at any minute could explode into a larger one - those whose occupation is to entertain and make merry realizing the value of providing any relief from the worries of the day.

"Ukraine has many bars, clubs, dance clubs, discos, karaoke bars, wine bars, coffeehouses, jazz clubs, and comedy clubs. Nightlife is thriving in Ukraine, even in cities close to the Russian border," is the official statement. However, the military presence has escalated a feeling of patriotism which is being reflected in the entertainment industry.

"Ukrainian artists and musicians create works that reflect national identity and patriotism, including online concerts and cinemas," according to Visit Ukraine.

It's true that "at the beginning of the Russian aggression, many entertainment venues, such as cinemas, theaters, and nightclubs, stopped functioning. The streets of the cities were engulfed in silence and fear," admitted Visit Ukraine.

"A few months later, the culture and entertainment industry began to recover from the "blow" that could not be compared even to the COVID-19 pandemic. At first, concerts and other entertainment events were held on a voluntary basis to help the Ukrainian army and citizens affected by the aggression of Putin's army.

"Overall, the war in Ukraine has had a significant impact on the culture and entertainment industry. Despite all the difficulties, Ukrainian artists, musicians, and other creative personalities continue to work and create works that reflect national identity and patriotism. At the same time, the war has led to many people losing their jobs and places of residence, and the film and television industry has undergone significant changes.

"Russian aggression has also led to a change in the usual forms of entertainment. For example, some people started spending more time at home because of the danger of going to public places. This has led to an increase in the popularity of online entertainment, such as streaming, online concerts, and online cinemas," reasoned Visit Ukraine.

Sadly several celebrities have lost their lives in the war.

As of September 21, 2024, 123 Ukrainian artists have given their lives on the battlefield defending Ukraine, according to Global Espresso.

Ukraine's Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Mykola Tochytskyi stated:

“This war is really aimed at destroying everything Ukrainian. Ukrainian culture, language, identity. We already have our own shot generation of artists. These are 123 artists who defended our history with arms," Tochytskyi emphasized as first reported by Ukrinform.

While one life is not more important than another, communications from Ukraine are spotty and not every death has received an obituary notice. Broadway To Vegas honors all of the fallen. What follows is the information which is readily available.

According to the MIT Center for International Studies:

Andrii Kasianov. Photo: Shevchenko Theatre.
Andrii Kasianov, an actor at the Shevchenko National Theatre in the city of Dnipro, has been killed defending Ukraine. He was 27. Film director and writer Iryna Tsilyk responded to the news. "An actor from Dnipro, Andrii Kasianov, has been killed in battle with the enemy. It's so painful. He should have had his whole life ahead of him... Rest in peace," she wrote as first reported in Ukraine Pravda.

One of the last roles he played was the Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani in the play A Million Red Roses.

She was reportedly killed alongside her mother by shelling as Russian forces encircled Mariupol. She was 14 years old.

Volodymyr Androshchuk was a decathlete who first rose to prominence as a member of Ukraine’s under-18 national team. In 2019, he won Ukraine’s Under-20 Championship in the decathlon and in 2020 he represented Ukraine at the European Under-20 contest, placing sixth.

Androshchuk was reportedly preparing to make his bid for the 2024 Olympics but abandoned that dream after the 2022 invasion, volunteering to fight instead. He served in an assault group and was killed near Bakhmut in January 2023.

Maksym Galinichev was a boxer who won in his weight class at the European Youth Championships in 2017, then went on to place second in both the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics and the 2021 European Under-22 Championships. After the full-scale Russian invasion, he put his sporting career on hold and volunteered as a soldier.

Galinichev was killed in action in the Luhansk region of Ukraine in March 2023, leaving behind a wife and 3-year-old daughter. In a 2021 interview, the young sportsman said his biggest motivators were "the desire to provide a future for my children, and to make my family proud of me."

Oleksandr Pielieshenko was a two-time European champion and competed in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, placing fourth in his weight category. He signed up to fight in the opening days of the 2022 Russian invasion and was killed in an unspecified area of the front in May 2024.

Pasha Lee
Lee, 33, worked in theater and cinema. He was also a television host, singer and composer.

Before the war, his Instagram feed reflected a glamorous lifestyle. One picture showed him on a yacht, another scuba diving, a third in Dubai.

Lee joined Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces when the war began. On March 1, he was pictured seated at a table in army fatigues and a beret. In his last Instagram post he is seated next to a woman also in uniform. The caption says they were being bombed, adding that "we smile because we will manage."

He died in shelling two days later.

The war killed opera singer Ihor Voronka, who stood up to defend Ukraine from the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion. This violinist and singer for the Dumka National Academic Chapel was killed in battle for Ukraine. He had been seriously wounded the previous year.

Mykola Lenok, a musician, folklorist and harmonica player of the Ukrainian independent theater Wild Theater, died in the war with the Russian occupiers.

Oleksandr Serdiuk, a vocalist with the Berehynia Theater in Kyiv, who joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces in late April, was killed while performing a combat mission.

According to Ukrainian World Congress, "The Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia on August 9, 2023 killed two Ukrainian women – 21-year-old Khrystyna Spitsyna and 19-year-old Svitlana Siemieykina. The girls were musicians of the Similar girls band and had just finished a concert in aid of the Armed Forces when the explosion rang out.

Kristina Spitsyna (R) and Svitlana Siemieikina (L). Svitlana played the guitar, and Khrystyna sang.
Svitlana played the guitar, and Khrystyna sang. People gathered around. That day, the girls ended their concert with a song about Kherson, which withstood the Russian occupation. One girl died at the scene of the explosion, and the other fought for her life until morning. "Then they sang the last song, and started collecting instruments and speakers. Svitlana’s boyfriend helped them. And the girls at that time moved aside – and a missile hit. The guy survived, but they died,” says Oleksandr Fedko, Head of the Cultural Center in Matviivka, where the musicians were from."

"Here we create a mood. We will touch every string of your soul," is a quote from their Instagram profile, the girls also had a page on TikTok.

After the full-scale invasion of Russia, Khrystyna and Svitlana traveled to different cities and performed in front of the military, on the streets, and in the squares to raise money for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. "They were very friendly, very musical. In general, Svitlana was always smiling, never sad. As artists, they were very emotional; they loved the audience, they loved the applause, as they were listened to," Fedko told the press.

"Everyone remembers Svitlana and Krystyna as inspiring and smiling girls. All of Ukraine heard their beautiful voices and songs. The girls believed in a bright and peaceful life under the Ukrainian flag. They believed in victory, and brought it closer with their own strength. Therefore, now we have to do it for them," the girls’ friend Viktoriia Knysh wrote.

The 18-year-old and 21-year-old were buried side by side in a graveyard. The girls are survived by their parents, Svitlana’s younger sister, and Khrystyna’s brother and sister.

The holiday parade across America used more than 20,000 LEGO bricks and more than 1,000 LEGO Minifigures. The attraction’s Master Model Builders took over 100 combined hours to build seasonal floats, mini turkeys, marching bands, balloons flying overhead and even Santa to recreate the parade into miniature holiday magic.

Guests who visit LEGOLAND Discovery Centers in Arizona, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Kansas City, Michigan, New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Antonio and Westchester; LEGO Discovery Centers in Atlanta, Boston, and Washington DC; and LEGOLAND New York Resort can see their local portion of the giant Thanksgiving Day parade now in the MINILAND experience.

MINILAND is an area which whimsically showcases the entire local cityscape made up of more than a million LEGO bricks.

RENE MAGRITTE'S famous painting L’empire des Lumières (1954) gaveled down at $121.2 million at Christie’s in New York on November 19, 2024, setting a new auction record for the Belgian Surrealist painter.

The canvas was offered during an auction dedicated to work from the estate of Mica Ertegun, the interior designer and art collector who died last year at 97.

GEORGE HARRISON'S GUITAR which the Beatles star purchased for about £58 was gaveled down at auction last Wednesday for £1.03 million (1.27 million dollars).

The Futurama electric guitar was bought by Harrison when he was a 16-year-old apprentice electrician in 1959. Because of his age, he was required to obtain his mother's signature on the purchase agreement at Frank Hessy's music shop in Liverpool. Harrison then paid for the instrument in 44 installments.

It went under the hammer in Nashville, Tennessee at Julien's Auctions' Played, Worn & Torn sale, fetching twice its initial estimate.

SWEET CHARITY

THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2024
King Charles greeting Sir Elton John. Photo Buckingham Palace.
took place in the presence of King Charles III at Royal Albert Hall. His wife, Queen Camilla, had to suddenly pull out due to doctor's orders. Camilla has been suffering from one of those viral bugs - the type that hangs on and the second you over extend yourself will raise its ugly head and take over your body. Last week the Queen was on a non-stop one-event to the next schedule and simply over did it. Just as she was telling her husband to take it easy, now that is what is being told to her.

King Charles arrived to be greeted by Executive Producers for the Royal Variety Charity Giles Cooper OBE, Laurie Mansfield and Phil Dale.

Presenters Amanda Holden and Alan Carr led the stars arriving at the 2024 Royal Variety Performance, with Las Vegas well represented.

Las Vegas superstars Penn and Teller whose performance marked their 50th anniversary flew in from Sin City specifically for this event. As they celebrate their 40th anniversary, Cirque Du Soleil performed a world exclusive from their Vegas show Ovo’. Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish presented a musical number from their new show The Devil Wears Prada – based on the 2006 Oscar-nominated film. The original score is by Sir Elton. Cast members Vanessa Williams, who plays Miranda Priestly, and Matt Henry, who stars as art director Nigel, helped showcase an original score by Sir Elton.

The variety show also saw debuts from British singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor with her hit track "Murder On The Dancefloor" while Eurovision winner Nemo was also featured on the bill. Plus, spectacular performances from the London casts ofOliver! and Starlight Express.

The team behind the smash hit The Play That Goes Wrong provided a sneak preview and the first public performance of their hilarious brand-new West End show The Comedy About Spies which comes to the West End next year.

A special appearance by Lorraine Kelly with her Change and Check Choir was led by iconic singing star Marti Pellow. They performed "Love Is All Around" which is celebrating its 30th anniversary and is being re-released to raise awareness of breast cancer early detection. The choir comprises women from across the UK who detected their breast cancer through Lorraine's trail-blazing campaign.

Plus, American actress and singer Marisha Wallace performed a show stopping number then lead the National Anthem accompanied by the Fanfare Trumpeters of the Band of the Welsh Guards.

The show also featured a performance from singer Sydnie Christmas, the winner of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent, who was accompanied by Dave Arch and The Royal Variety Orchestra. Magician Stephen Mulhern wowed the crowd with an incredible illusion and the English National Ballet performed Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from their Christmas production of Nutcracker.

Stand-up comedy this year was provided by Ellie Taylor of Ted Lasso fame, plus writer and comic Scott Bennett and award-winning Scottish comedian Larry Dean.

Matt Forde, whose mother is a former nun, underwent cancer surgery removing the base of his spine, nailed his Royal Variety Performance. The political satirist presents his topical The End of An Era Tour November 27 to Chipping Norton, Chipping Norton Theatre. However, it was political satirist Matt Forde, aided by a crutch after undergoing surgery for cancer on his spine, who all but stole the show.

Delivering spot on impression of President-elect Trump he told a joke which caused King Charles enjoy a hardy laugh.

Forde reference the claims Trump repeated during his presidential debate against Democrat candidate Kamala Harris earlier this year, that illegal immigrants from Haiti were eating locals’ pets in the small Ohio city of Springfield.

Forde exclaimed in the president-elect’s voice: "They’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs!"

He then turned towards the royal box to address Charles from the stage, saying in Mr Trump’s voice: "Your Majesty King Charles, you’re named after a spaniel – be very careful, they’ll eat you alive."

The event is staged in aid of the Royal Variety Charity.

The money raised from the show helps those people from the world of entertainment in need of care and assistance and this year the charity has launched an initiative to help those with mental health issues.

The Royal Variety Performance has been commissioned by Katie Rawcliffe, Head of Entertainment Commissioning ITV and David Smyth, Entertainment Commissioning Editor at ITV.

Executive Producer for Lifted Entertainment is Fiona Clark and Series Producer for Lifted Entertainment is Helen Riddell.

The Royal Variety Performance will air on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player in December.

SPREADING THE WORD

NOBODY DOES POMP BETTER THAN THE BRITISH
King Chares and Queen Camilla at the 2024 Diplomatic Corps reception. Photo Buckingham Palace.
as demonstrated in their annual Diplomatic Corps reception which was held in the state rooms at Buckingham Palace.

King Charles, who refused to wear knee britches at his own coronation, donned them for this totally jaw dropping, posh event. The Monarch looked resplendent in black satin knee britches and black silk stockings. Upon his royal feet were patient leather shoes adorned with a regulation gold buckle. Queen Camilla was stunning in a blue velvet evening dress by Fiona Clare. On her well coiffed head was Elizabeth II’s delicate and exquisite aquamarine and diamond tiara. That head topper features five large aquamarines set in intricate ribbons of diamonds. Camilla wore her own aquamarine and diamond necklace and earrings. Pinned on her gown was a special piece of jewellery - King Charles III’s Family Order – a hand crafted, diamond-encased miniature portrait of her husband topped with a tiny gold and enamel Tudor crown and suspended on a pale blue silk bow on her left shoulder.

Family Orders badges are personally bestowed by the sovereign to female members of the royal family signifying the importance of that person within the household. They are worn only at formal evening occasions.

With the help of William, Prince of Wales, the trio greeted 900 guests; foreign ambassadors and high commissioners based in the UK, their spouses or partners, and diplomatic staff. William was handsome in white tie, accessorized with his Order of the Garter blue sash with Lesser George badge.

The evening included a buffet supper and dancing in the Palace ballroom.

YELLOW FACE the awesome Broadway production, which just closed at the Todd Haimes Theatre, was recorded November 21-23 by Great Performances to air on PBS.

Starring Daniel Dae Kim, David Henry Hwang’s acclaimed play was directed by Leigh Silverman.

Kim stars as an Asian American playwright who protests yellowface casting in the blockbuster musical Miss Saigon, only to mistakenly cast a white actor as the Asian lead in his own play. The repercussions resonate wildly in this laugh-out-loud farce about the complexities of race.

The company of Yellow Face also features Kevin Del Aguila as "Actor A," Ryan Eggold as "Marcus," Francis Jue as "HYH & Others," Marinda Anderson as "Actor B," Greg Keller as "Reporter," and Shannon Tyo as "Leah & Others."

The creative team for Yellow Face includes Arnulfo Maldonado (Set Design), Anita Yavich (Costume Design), Lap Chi Chu (Lighting Design), Caroline Eng and Kate Marvin (Sound Design & Original Music) and Yee Eun Nam (Projection Design).

"As a longtime fan and supporter of both PBS and Great Performances, I couldn’t be happier for my production company, 3AD, to be collaborating with them to bring new life to Yellow Face," says Daniel Dae Kim. "I am deeply grateful to David, Leigh, Roundabout, our exceptional cast and crew, and everyone who supported our efforts to bring this important and entertaining play to an even wider audience."

"We are delighted to partner with Roundabout Theatre Company to capture Yellow Face to bring this powerful play to a national audience,"says Great Performances Executive Producer David Horn. "It’s thought-provoking, relevant, and showcases the artistic excellence we value at Great Performances."

For the first time ever, Olney Theatre-favorite Michael Russotto steps into the legendary shoes of Paul Morella to star in this year's edition of Paul's celebrated solo adaptation of A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas. Unlike other Carols, this version stays truest to Dickens' original vision of a singular storyteller and employs his original text for 99% of its action. Come see Michael Russotto portray over 50 characters, from the miserly Scrooge to the haunting spirits, to the entire Cratchit family, including, of course, Tiny Tim. God bless us, everyone! A Christmas Carol plays on.

Due to a medical event earlier this year, Paul is unable to perform in this season’s run of A Christmas Carol. He and his family are thrilled that Michael Russotto has agreed to step in and keep the tradition alive. We wish Paul a speedy recovery and look forward to his return in 2025.

"It's a real honor to step into a role that has become central to so many people’s experience of the holiday season, in a show that Paul Morella has carefully crafted and refined over many years. Generally the Brits lead the way. The difference with this effort may have been in that Americans lived through - ad nauseam - the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker debacle. British critics, which loved the show, were perhaps seeing a story new to them while American critics were nonplussed with the kitsch.

FIVE GOLD RINGS book by Stephen Garvey. Music and Lyrics by David Abbinanti.

Directed by Dan Murphy.

About the show: Cozy up for this musical holiday special, as Holly, a business executive from the big city, gets snowed in at a quaint Vermont bed and breakfast for Christmas, and begins to fall for its rugged yet charming owner. From flannel shirts to flirtatious snowball fights, _Five Golden Rings_ is everything you want in a "Greeting Card Christmas Show." Don’t miss this humorous and heartwarming romance, an affectionate parody of America’s favorite greeting card channel.

"With Five Golden Rings being a heartfelt send-up of charming and silly Hallmark Christmas films, we figured we should explore the history of this incredibly popular holiday movie machine," states the Broadway Rose.

"While the Hallmark Channel as we know it today did not launch until 2001, the channel has its origins in the Faith and Values Channel, launched in 1993. After rebranding to the Odyssey Network and again to the Hallmark Channel, Hallmark zeroed its focus on made-for-TV movies. These funny, predictable, and heartwarming films have developed a dedicated following since their most famous seasonal programming block, "Countdown to Christmas," launched in 2009.

"Did you know that each Hallmark movie only takes a few weeks to film? They have to be speedy to keep up with the demands of producing dozens of Christmas movies each year, with that number growing to 47 movies in 2024 for a total of over 400 Christmas films! And the number of movies isn’t the only impressive figure when it comes to Hallmark’s movies: each one has a "snow budget" of $50,000! From cheeky comedies to whirlwind romances, the Hallmark Channel’s Christmastime offerings are vast and growing every year."

Don't miss out on all the hilarious holiday fun! A loving tribute to everyone's favorite Christmas romcoms.

Jeri was known as a writer and producer of the television series Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: The Next Generation. She also worked on many of TV's best-known shows during the 1970s and '80s. In male-dominated Hollywood, Jeri managed to succeed while still maintaining her leadership style, which was based on kindness and compassion, a balance that she navigated with poise and a quiet strength.

Jeri went on to become one of the first female sports reporters ever in the United States for a local Bloomington, Indiana, newspaper. She met her first husband, sportscaster Dick Enberg, and the pair moved to Los Angeles when Dick was offered a teaching and coaching job at San Fernando Valley State College (now Cal State Northridge), where Jeri got her Master's in English, and where she utilized her storytelling skills, directing and acting in regional productions at the Northridge Playhouse. Their marriage would end in divorce.

She also ran her own acting academy called the Kingswood Talent Group.

In 1979, Jeri began a successful career writing for television, scripting episodes for such shows as Little House on the Prairie; The Incredible Hulk and two ABC Afterschool Specials.

Her work on the medical procedural drama, Quincy, M.E., led to additional roles as story editor and eventually producer on the series. She would continue in the dual roles of writer/producer on such acclaimed shows as In the Heat of the Night; Magnum, P.I. and Jake and the Fatman.

In 1986, Jeri married television writer, director and producer David Moessinger, a marriage that lasted thirty-one years until his death in 2018. They had no children

In 1990, a recommendation to the producers ofStar Trek: The Next Generation led to her co-writing the fourth-season episode "Suddenly Human." Her script earned her an invitation to join the show's production staff. During her tenure, the show earned twenty-four Emmy nominations and nine wins. Her success in capturing the heart and soul of Star Trek led to her being one of the creative forces behind the show's third spin-off series, Star Trek: Voyager. The show gave the Star Trek franchise its first female captain. "If there is anything that I have brought to the series, I think it may be a heightened awareness of 'female sensibility' and wanting to develop the roles of our women [characters] a little more strongly." In 2005, Jeri was presented with an Honorary Doctorate and the Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater, Indiana University, where she had arranged for all 178 scripts of Star Trek: The Next Generation to be donated to the campus library.

Jeri and David retired to Sea Ranch, CA. Jeri became very active with the Sea Ranch Thespians and the Gualala Arts Center, acting or directing in over twenty-five productions.
