GHOSTED: A HORROR STORY BY LINDSAY SHARMAN

Ghosted is a five-episode psychological drama and ghost horror story, written and directed by Lindsay Sharman, from Longcap media heard on Wireless Theatre.

The actors speak theatre English, meaning you can understand each and every word without a trace of any accent. The sound balancing is excellent. Interesting frequent transitions from present to past and back again.

Perched on a rain-battered cliff edge is a former lighthouse; now a charming, boutique hotel. Owner and sole occupant Beth has spent months renovating, absorbing its essence into her bones, preparing for her first guest to arrive. But when they do, to Beth’s horror, it is a figure from a past she has tried to forget. Keira. Face-to-face for the first time in years, the pair must reckon with old mistakes, old grievances.

And something else. Because the lighthouse has a past too.

The production is peppered with vulgarity.

Keira, why is there blood on your hands?

Ghosted, a story to put a chill down your spine on a hot summer day.

She couldn't tell if he was trying to scare her, or flirt with her, acknowledging that many times its difficult to know the difference.

Welcome to Beeshoop lighthouse.

Keira, what are you doing here?

Flashback.

A group of friends drinking and using a Oujia board.

"Clear you mind from petty grievance, Relax. Out, In," is the breathing routine.

Return to the present.

"What are you doing here?" repeats Beth.

"I have a reservation," asserts Keira.

"I don't have your name on the book. This is my lighthouse," counters Beth , noting it's been 10 years since they graduated.

Flashback.

The friends at the Oujia board session, agree not to light a candle. "It's better in the dark.:

Return to the present.

A lighthouse turned into a B&B with circular beds for a 360 degree view. Moans from the lighthouse "like an old man." A wounded seagull.

Flashback.

They each accuse the other of pushing the Oujia board planchette and attempt to decide if the planchette has landed on an "E or G". They conclude it's telling them "Gabriel, like the archangel. Gabby."

"I know a Gabby. My best friend She's dead," discloses Beth.

Four other episodes follow.

Music, Sound Design and Editing by Laurence Owen. Artwork by Laurence Owen.

Featuring Beth Eyre as Beth, Lucy Roslyn as Keira, Tessa Hatts as Merta, Laurence Owen as Wes and additional voices by Lindsay Sharman.

This series is supported by Arts Council England National Lottery project grants and available at Wireless Theatre.

Ghosted won the Tinniswood Award for Best Audio Drama.

ART AND ABOUT

ROYAL PORTRAITS: A CENTURY OF PHOTOGRAPHY is the new display at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace. For centuries, portraiture has played a vital role in shaping the public’s perception of the Royal Family. This exhibition charts the evolution of royal portrait photography from the 1920s to the present day, bringing together more than 150 photographic prints, proofs and documents from the Royal Collection and the Royal Archives.

Featuring works from the most celebrated royal photographers, from Cecil Beaton and Dorothy Wilding to Annie Leibovitz and Rankin, discover the stories behind some of the most recognized photographs ever taken of the Royal Family. Explore some of the close relationships between royal sitters and photographers, seen most clearly through the lens of Antony Armstrong-Jones (later Lord Snowdon), who married Princess Margaret in 1960.

The exhibition sheds light on behind-the-scenes processes, from photographers’ handwritten annotations to never-before-seen correspondence with members of the Royal Family and their staff, revealing the stories behind some of the most celebrated photographs ever taken of the Royal Family.

This exhibition is taking place at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, formerly known as The Queen’s Gallery until October 6, 2024.

Photography on display include: a Stunning 1949 Colour Portraits of Princess Margaret. Commissioned for the Princess's 19th birthday, these images were created using a cutting-edge process of colour transparency film, echoing classic Hollywood glamor.

King Charles III a painting by Yuo which is mermerizing. His face and hands appear almost 3-D. An emotionally, multi-layering, sensitive work of art delving into royal complexities. Photo: The Royal Family
Then there is that red painting. You know the one.

The polarizing official portrait of King Charles III created by 53-year-old Jonathan Yeo.

This work is not "merely a portrait" but a work of creative genius which causes the view to think and feel. The divided opinion outpouring is interesting and troubling. Some critics have taken the low road and sunk into inappropriately prurient reference comments.

The wonderful feature of the creative arts is that there is something for everyone. If you don't like one song, listen to something else. Don't like a performance - no problem. Go see a different act. The would of painting has different styles and mediums. If you don't like one, there will be something that you do like.

I, for one, think the red painting of King Charles is dynamic. At first you are shocked, because it certainly isn't what one traditionally expects from a royal portrait. Then it becomes captivating, almost hypnotic. The hands and face appear to be 3-D. You want to reach out and touch.

I like the red. It's a strong color denoting power, determination, and in some ways his body coming through the crimson acknowledges his own survival of numerous issues.

Think through other colors and they would have been too depressing (black/brown), too arrogantly royal (purple/blue) too childish (yellow/orange/green).

King Charles at 75, is the most photographed person in the world. If you don't like one picture of him - flip the page, you'll find one that suits your taste.

Jonathan Yeo is a British artist of contemporary portraiture who was educated at Westminster School. He rose to prominence for having painted Kevin Spacey, Dennis Hopper, and Cara Delevingne, among others. GQ described him as "one of the world's most in-demand portraitists."

The painting was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then Prince of Wales’s 50 years as a member of The Drapers’ Company in 2022.

Queen Camilla painted by Yuo when she was the Duchess of Cornwall. She appears thoughtful, serious, pondering, sensitive. She wouldn't be hasty or knee jerk in her opinions. You could trust her. Photo: The Royal Family
King Charles III isn't the first Royal portrait by Yeo, who has previously painted The Duchess of Cornwall (now The Queen) and the late Duke of Edinburgh.

The portrait in question depicts His Majesty wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was made Regimental Colonel in 1975. The canvas size - approximately 8 1/2 by 6 1/2 feet framed - was carefully considered to fit within the architecture of Drapers’ Hall and the context of the paintings it will eventually hang alongside.

Jonathan Yeo had four sittings with The King, beginning when His Majesty was Prince of Wales in June 2021 at Highgrove, and later at Clarence House. The last sitting took place in November 2023 at Clarence House. Yeo also worked from drawings and photography he took of His Majesty, allowing him to work on the portrait in his London studio between sittings.

"I do my best to capture the life experiences and humanity etched into any individual sitter's face, and I hope that is what I have achieved in this portrait," he said in an Instagram post.

During the creation process Yuo suffered a heart attack in March 2023.

"When I started this project, His Majesty The King was still His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and much like the butterfly I've painted hovering over his shoulder, this portrait has evolved as the subject's role in our public life has transformed."

According to reference books: Native Americans have considered butterflies as symbols of transformation, hope, and rebirth. In Chinese culture, the symbolism of butterflies evokes the qualities of freedom, earthly beauty, love, and the human soul. They have inspired humans for millennia with their delicate nature and the immense power they possess.

The King and Queen attended the unveiling, and were met on arrival by The Master of The Drapers’ Company, Tom Harris and Past Master, William Charnley. Together they joined Jonathan Yeo who said a few words after His Majesty unveiled the portrait. The artist spoke of his gratitude for being given, "'the opportunity to capture such an extraordinary and unique person, especially at the historic moment of becoming King."

Guests included other members of the Drapers’ Company, students and staff from the Drapers’ Academy, Welsh Guards and Jonathan Yeo’s family.

The portrait is on public display at the Philip Mould Gallery in London, until June 14, 2024. The artwork is expected to be displayed at Drapers’ Hall from the end of August.

LEE ALEXANDER & ANN RAY: RENDEZ VOUS on display May 30–August 25, 2024 in the Ingram Gallery at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, Tennessee.

Lee Alexander McQueen (1969–2010) redefined contemporary fashion with his extraordinary ability to blend exquisite craftsmanship with intimate and imaginative storytelling. Mythologized in his own lifetime, he was characterized as a troubled genius and one of the twentieth century’s most visionary designers. Lee Alexander McQueen & Ann Ray: Rendez-Vous offers a rare glimpse into the life and mind of McQueen and introduces one of the twentieth century’s great, but lesser-known, fashion photographers, Ann Ray (b. 1969). With exclusive, unfettered access to McQueen’s world, Ray captured everything from contemplative moments in the design studio to the organized chaos backstage at runway shows. In total, she shot forty-three collections over the course of thirteen years, creating a massive body of work and an indelible record of McQueen’s process.

The exhibition features 65 photographs hand-selected by Ray from her archive of over 32,000 negatives, more than 50 dress objects spanning the entirety of McQueen’s career, 10 gifted garments from Ray’s wardrobe, and various pieces of fashion ephemera, all of which are sourced from one of the world’s largest private collections of McQueen’s works. Both thorough and emotional, the exhibition offers the unique opportunity to reevaluate the life and legacy of a beloved but widely misunderstood figure, and to disentangle the person from the persona.

Lee Alexander McQueen & Ann Ray: Rendez-Vous is organized and produced by Barrett Barrera Projects.

NORMAN LEAR'S ART a 64-lot sale was led by a David Hockney painting once owned by the famed television producer Norman Lear that sold for $28.6 million and a Vincent van Gogh that sold for $33.2 million at a Christie's auction.

Blink and you could have missed it. Hockney’s A Lawn Being Sprinkled (1967) was the first of the evening’s high-value lots to be gaveled down. With an estimate of $25 million–$35 million it was among the most expensive works in the sale, matched only by van Gogh’s Coin de Jardin avec papillons (1887). Bidding lasted just over a minute with only two or three parties competing. The work sold to a bidder on the phone for a hammer price of $24.5 million ($28.6 million with fees).

Lear had purchased the Hockney painting in 1978 for $64,000.

Lear paid what was a record-breaking price for a Hockney work when he acquired the painting in 1978, according to the auction house, but nowadays the artist’s most valuable pieces sell for tens of millions rather than tens of thousands. The painting, created in 1967, is acrylic on canvas and features a number of sprinklers spraying a green lawn, with a gray building and a fence in the background. Norman Lear died in December of 2023 at age 101.

PAUL McCARTNEY'S BOOTS according to Sotheby's auction house, Steven Lowe of Crispinians has been building custom-made shoes and boots for Paul McCartney for many years. He has three 'Beatle boot' designs on file for Paul, specifically designed by McCartney’s team. Steven personally measures the Fab foot on a regular basis, to make the wooden lasts which are pressed into service every time he is asked to produce a new pair of boots. And such is his painstaking attention to detail, skill and craftsmanship, Steven Lowe’s relationship with McCartney has endured for years, continuing to this day.

“When I’m asked to build a pair of shoes for Paul, his team will select which of the designs we have that they want. The design might need tweaking – I might alter a few lines here or there – but I certainly did not design them, their designs go back a long time”, according to an article on Lowe printed by Sotheby's.

The boots Lowe created for Paul were modeled on the classic 'Beatle boots', made almost as stupendously famous as the group themselves, during the first flush of Beatlemania. Ubiquitous today, Chelsea boots, as they became known due to their association with the most chic London borough of the mid-1960s, were virtually unknown to the wider public back in 1962.

When the Beatles had first ordered their boots from Anello & Davide in 1961, they had insisted on the added lift provided by the then-novel 'Cuban' square heel, elevating the boot and adding another eccentric element to the band’s visual appeal. The heel would become an integral feature of the classic Beatle boot.

"This particular boot, because of the Cuban heel is higher than a regular dress shoe," says Lowe. "It’s lifted, so the instep becomes higher in the front, and the ball of the foot is resting in a slightly different position," Lowe told Sotheby's.

The crafting process to create a pair of customized boots at Crispinians can take up to three months, with a pre-existing last. The use of special materials requires further time and skill, such as in the case of Paul’s 2012 stage boots. McCartney insists on cruelty-free vegan leather and to accommodate this directive, whilst retaining the appearance and texture of traditional shoe leather, Lowe was provided with Alter Napper, a faux leather made of polyester and polyurethane with vegetable oil and plant extracts.

"It’s a little more complex,” he concedes. “Vegan leather doesn't quite stretch in the same way as regular leather does. It’s made with various materials, including vegetable-based fibres from coconut husks, mushrooms, and pineapple. The material itself is quite delicate, so the patterns must be much more accurate, particularly around the bottom edge."

The insistence on ‘Alter Napper’ comes of course, directly from Lowe’s client. Inspired by his late wife Linda, one of the UK’s most prominent advocates of a vegetarian lifestyle from the early 1970s until her death in 1997, McCartney and his daughters Mary and Stella today continue Linda’s mission to educate the public about the benefits of cruelty-free lifestyles.

Paul McCartney's personally owned and stage worn boots have an estimated auction value of 10,000 – 15,000GBP.

SWEET CHARITY

THE SOHO SESSIONS an exclusive music-driven community known for curating exceptional live experiences in NYC, returns June 5 for a special edition co-presented by Rolling Stone CEO Gus Wenner in support of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country. The Soho Sessions is a hidden Gotham gem open to a select number of invited in-person guests. It’s produced by RWE Partners, the team behind the annual Love Rocks NYC concerts.

The June 5 edition of The Soho Sessions will be hosted by Academy Award-winning actress and Everytown Creative Council founding chair Julianne Moore, alongside supermodel and singer-songwriter Karen Elson, with a powerhouse performance by British rock band The Struts. Together, they aim to elevate the night's mission to combat gun violence, rallying support for Everytown's crucial initiatives.

Renowned for their triumphant, timeless rock sound, The Struts have captivated audiences worldwide since their critically-acclaimed debut, 2016’s Everybody Wants. Beyond headlining tours, they have shared stages with icons like The Rolling Stones and Foo Fighters. Their latest album, Pretty Vicious, continues their tradition of anthemic rock, combining explosive energy with lyrical introspection. This celebrated record, their first with Big Machine/John Varvatos, solidifies their position at the forefront of modern rock music.

"Gun violence is a preventable epidemic, and an organization like Everytown for Gun Safety is bringing crucial education and awareness to communities nationwide,” Wenner said. “I am very pleased to be partnering with The Soho Sessions for this special event to help put an end to the urgent issue of gun violence."

Every day, more than 120 Americans are killed with guns and more than 200 are shot and wounded. Sadly, firearms are the leading cause of death for American children and teens. The June 5th Soho Sessions will raise awareness for Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with more than ten million supporters and more than 700,000 donors, including moms, mayors, survivors, students, and everyday Americans, who are fighting for common-sense gun safety measures that can help save lives. The organization, along with its grassroots arms of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, is committed to putting an end to gun violence and changing how America thinks about gun violence. Whether it’s electing gun sense champions at every level of office, demanding action from our elected officials, working to pass common-sense gun laws, educating the public about secure firearm storage, and more, Everytown is committed to keeping our families and communities safe.

"Gun violence has been an important cause to me and my family for as long as I can remember,” said Greg Williamson, who co-founded RWE Partners alongside Nicole Rechter. “This is an ongoing crisis, and we jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the solution alongside Everytown for Gun Safety and Gus Wenner. As we come together to enjoy some great music, let’s help to ensure no more lives are lost to gun violence"

"To stop the shooting, we don’t just need to change the laws — we also need to change the culture, which is why Everytown is so grateful to Gus Wenner and RWE Partners for pulling together this group of creative heavyweights,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Right now, gunfire is part of the daily soundtrack in too many American communities, and artists like The Struts, Karen Elson, and Julianne Moore are harnessing their talents to raise an alarm and rally support."

NEW JERSEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (NJPAC) raised a record $415,000 for its social impact programs — including arts education, community engagement events and arts & well-being programming — at its recent annual Women@NJPAC Spring Luncheon & Auction

Robin Roberts, the longtime anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, delivered the event’s keynote address, discussing both her long career in broadcast journalism, and the resilience that carried her through several health challenges.

"I’m an eternal optimist, and optimism is like a muscle that gets stronger with use," Roberts said. "You get in the habit of expecting something good to happen. And that’s what gets me through. When fear knocks, I let faith answer the door."

The event also honored Nancy Cantor, Chancellor of Rutgers University-Newark, who will leave her post after a decade’s service this summer, to become president of Hunter College at City University of New York. Cantor was presented with The Ronnie Goldberg Award for her support of NJPAC and the city of Newark, as well as her work at the University.

"There is nothing we need more than the arts right now. It is the platform for bringing people together," Chancellor Cantor said as she accepted the award.

This year’s Luncheon, held on the flower-decked Betty Wold Johnson Stage in NJPAC’s Prudential Hall, welcomed some 550 members of Women@NJPAC — the Arts Center’s fundraising and friend raising arm, which also programs events that advance and promote women in the arts, business, philanthropy and government.

Many guests wore hats or fascinators along with seasonal spring attire for the event; fashionable toppers are a Spring Luncheon tradition. Displays of oversized paper flowers created by Paterson-based artist Yorgeilin Nuñez decorated the entirety of Prudential Hall, and were included in the fundraising auction.

Philanthropist Tammy T. Jones and Kerri B. Levine, Vice President of the Fidelco Group, served as Co-Chairs of this year’s Luncheon.

WORLD FAMOUS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW BLOOMS IN A NEW DIRECTION

The King and Queen at Chelsea Flower Show with children who crowned them King of the Compost and Queen of the Bees. Photo: The Royal Family
King of the Compost.
Queen of the Bees.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have added new titles to their resumes.

His Majesty. an avid gardener and environmentalist along with his sustainable wife Camilla visited the Chelsea Flower Show bringing along some other royals including the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and Lady Amelia Windsor, 28, who is the granddaughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.

The venerable Chelsea Flower Show has uprooted its old ways and branched out into sustainability.

For the first time, The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) awarded a green medal for sustainability alongside the customary gold, silver-gilt, silver and bronze medals.

This is the first time the prestigious garden show has commissioned a carbon audit of planned gardens.

All gardens in the Show and Sanctuary categories who have gone through the carbon audit are eligible for the green award.

Design changes implemented as a result of gardens going through the new audit process had a significant impact reducing carbon emissions across the two categories by 28 per cent.

Nicholsons, the company commissioned by the RHS to carry out the audit alongside RHS Head of Sustainability Malcolm Anderson reviewed the garden design and build plans in terms of a broad range of sustainability criteria. They then worked with the designers and contractors to make workable changes to their plans in order to reduce the environmental footprint of the gardens.
Malcolm Anderson, RHS Head of Sustainability said: "As the UK’s leading gardening charity we have been making positive changes across the organization and at our shows to make our practices more sustainable."

The green space is filled with probiotic plants curated to protect and aid humans with various bowel-related illnesses.

And among the more unique designs are a 'no adults allowed' garden and a 'flood resilient garden'. The section featured wetland, woodlands and meadows to encourage young people to take an interest in the environment.

As part of their visit, Charles and Camilla were permitted to visit the No Adults Allowed Garden, designed by Harry Holding and children from Sulivan Primary School - the first time a garden designed by children for children has featured at the show. The garden enables young visitors to take a joyful journey through a fantastical landscape exploring the magic of lush woodland, meadows and a wetland. However, as adults, the royal couple was required to pay a "forfeit" in the form of planting a tree, donating to the RHS for School Gardening or if they bring a flower beginning with the initial of their name.

Obeying, the royal couple handed over a bouquet of camellias, flowers from the Buckingham Palace gardens.

During their stay the children declared that the royal couple were also the King of the Compost and Queen of the Bees. The royal couple graciously accepted their new titled.

One of the youngest royals attending, Lady Amelia Windsor, has been working with the team at Kent Wildflower Seeds to bring their first garden of wild flowers to the 2024 show.

During the walk about Queen Camilla visited a stunning garden inspired by the hit series Bridgerton, Her Majesty admitted that she saw the first season.

celebrates its 50th anniversary at Santa Monica’s The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage / Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center on June 2 with a gala event honoring award-winning television producer, civic engagement advocate and longtime L.A. Theatre Works supporter Marcy Carsey. The festivities will include a reception, formal dinner and an exciting program featuring remembrances by L.A. Theatre Works veterans including Ed Begley, Jr., Hector Elizondo, Susan Sullivan, Karen Malina White, JoBeth Williams and more.

“Marcy Carsey may be best known for producing television favorites like The Cosby Show, A Different World, Roseanne, Grace Under Fire, 3rd Rock from the Sun and That ’70s Show, but she is also an outstanding public citizen who has made a tremendous contribution to the arts, to arts education, and to the public policy sector,” says L.A. Theatre Works producing director Susan A. Loewenberg, who will be honored alongside Carsey at the event. “Her Carsey School for Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire is known for its graduate programs, research, policy education and civic engagement work focused on improving equality and sustainability in communities. Although she’s garnered many awards over the years, this is the first time Marcy will be honored at a gala event like this one.” Carsey, 79, is a member of the George Foster Peabody Awards board of jurors. She is best known for her work with fellow producer Tom Werner forming the company Carsey-Werner Productions in 1981. She is also referred to as a real estate mogul. The Emmy winner was named one of the 50 greatest women in radio and television. Carsey graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in English literature. In the 1960s, she was a tour guide at NBC in New York City, moved up to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. With a high intellect and enormous drive, the entire Tonight Show crew knew she was destined for greatness. In 1974, she began working for ABC as a comedy programming executive, rising through the ranks at the ABC network to become senior VP of PrimeTime Series. She left ABC in 1980 and formed her own production company, which became the Carsey-Werner Company.

As for LA Theatre Works: "Although we’ve been around for five decades, L.A. Theatre Works took a leap in the mid-80s in how we bring great theater to audiences everywhere," Loewenberg says. "While the technology behind how we get theater to millions of global audience members keeps changing, the one constant continues to be great dramatic content. L.A. Theatre Works has an unwavering commitment to presenting and producing the highest quality, most exciting and meaningful plays of yesterday, today and tomorrow with stellar casts."

L.A. Theatre Works stands apart in its approach to making great theater widely accessible and affordable, bringing an immersive theater experience to a diverse audience of over eight million people each year through a range of programs including a live performance series; national touring; its national weekly radio series entitled L.A.
