SUMMER MEANS FESTIVALS - SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Summer means Festivals. In addition to the required Shakespeare Festivals, a plethora of events involving entertainment should satasfy any taste. Broadway To Vegas has done a spotcheck. Below are a few of the festivals which play out through the end of May and all of June, 2024.

People in Copenhagen, Denmark known how to through a good street party. Beginning May 29th and running through June 2, 2024 the COPENHAGEN DISTORTION FESTIVAL
takes place - all over Copenhagen. Thousands of party hardy people - all aged 18 or over - cutting loose will swarm the streets drinking, dancing and performing on pop up stages. It's what been called the Ultimate Street Party. The exceptionally good citizens, then clean up after themselves, and move on to the next neighborhood - repeating each night until the street party culminates at the harbor for two nights of electronic music. Headlines have been international known headliners.

According to the official history record: "Distortion started as an experimental party project in 1998. In 2000 it became a 5-day-long party-crawl going through one Copenhagen district per day. The magic started with plenty of intimate backyard grill parties, receptions, happenings, party bus and champagne boats, all over Copenhagen, with 30-200 people at each get-together. Each event was cute, but it was the combination and the fact that Distortion was a travel through the city, full of genuine love for Copenhagen, that created the special atmosphere. Many of these events were not totally legal, but we were always semi-responsible: we cleaned after ourselves and respected the neighbors. The Police was nice when we met them – and since we were mobile and happy, we just moved around and no problemo. "For the first time in 2007, we got 1,500 guests at one single street party on Enghave Plads and almost 3,000 guests at Final Party. Until then, we had never had a strategy or a budget: Distortion was just for fun. In 2008, we opened a semi-professional entrepreneurship (the Distortion secretariat, Nus/Nus) made a contract with the Copenhagen City Council and bought a trashy black 1982-Mercedes stretch limousine – and somehow relaunched the festival. Things have gone fast since then. In 2011 we broke into the mainstream with 100.000+ guests at Vesterbro’s block party. In 2012 we became a not-for-profit Foundation and in 2013, we were finally ready to soon be known around the world as the craziest party on the planet."

All events will be live-streamed on Instagram.

"Satellite is working in a new kind of venue for the collective. We are bringing the athletic performance and production values of our performing arts work into a gallery space. Here, we have the opportunity to engage in longer conversations with our audience and more prominently feature the compelling visual artists driving Satellite’s collaborations," shared the team at Satellite.

Satellite Collective's Tribeca Show 2024 is designed to foster intimate moments in a classic New York gallery space. In addition to new prints and projections from featured artist Kevin Draper and new film and photography by featured artist Lora Robertson, the Tribeca Show will consist of two busy weekends of new music, dance, discussion, and visual art, and film presented by Satellite Collective. Satellite Collective's Tribeca Show 2024 will include direct art experience with panels, performances, visual art, screenings, and a view into how creativity informs collaboration.

The event will also reveal the New York premiere of Sad Blimp Twins, a pair of forty foot long blimps coming to New York for the first time as Satellite’s official mascots. Sad Blimp Twins are a pair of aerostats designed to fly from tall masts and act as cinema screens for public performances. They first flew on the lawn of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and will premiere in New York inside the gallery. At full inflation, the blimps are fourteen feet in diameter and nearly forty feet long. Designed by Kevin Draper, they act as reminders of distant technologies of observation.

Some of the presentations include: NYC Premiere of Stelth Ulvang’s The Heartbeats of Stars, In Which Aliens Love Louis Armstrong, a spoken word and music collaboration with Satellite Collective, and violin-piano duo Upstream debuts with co-compositions for piano and violin. Refreshments served. Stelth Ulvang premieres The Heartbeats of Stars inspired by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan's data capture of love that left our galaxy on Voyager's gold record. And Upstream, with 2023 Leonard Bernstein Award Winner Will Healy, debuts violin-piano duo Upstream with George Meyer, performing a live program of co-compositions for piano, cello, viola, violin by these Juilliard-trained composers, reaching into hip-hop, bluegrass, and jazz.

Join a group of award-winning filmmakers as they share the horrors and triumphs of getting their films green-lit. Hosted by Nikhil Melnechuk, and featuring directors working across the indie film landscape, Abby Kollek, Sylvia Ray, Manon Gage, DJ Daughtry, BODYSONNET, and more."

An Arts Panel with film and live ballet is titled: "The New York of Gordon Matta-Clark: Alive in the City Today." Feature Performance: Central Park, Earlier In Time, inspired by Satellite Collective’s Echo & Narcissus. Panel moderator Paulina Ascencio Fuentes lives and works between Guadalajara and New York City. She has worked with the Gordon Matta-Clark archives and the Estate on several research projects and exhibitions. Her research outlines transdisciplinary modes of knowledge production and transmission. Panelists include: Jessamyn Fiore, Co-Director, Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark; Artists of SITE:LAB, and Kevin Draper and Lora Robertson, Satellite Collective.

WILLAMETTE THEATRE 33 SUMMER FESTIVAL
at Willamette University on the Salem Campus in Oregon stages a performance of APE by Dano Madden on May 23-25 and May 30-June2, 2024 A middle-aged man, struggling to become a parent, finds himself haunted by the spirit of his dead mother, creating even more distance in his already faltering marriage. APE is a play about ghosts, those who have died, those who never existed, and consciousness that lies inside of consciousness. The play explores the effect of memory on our essential sense of being and ultimately asks how it is possible to truly exist in the present moment?

From June 20-28 and August 1-2 it's Grow Learn Play by Jean Accuardi. In Grow Learn Play it won't stop snowing, it's getting late, Gloria's parents still haven't come to pick her up, and these daycare employees just want to get home. A play about the importance, and the limits, of sharing and caring.

July 25-28 and August 1-4 the production is Gone by Lolly Ward. A will provides peace of mind as four stepsiblings divide their anticipated inheritance with generosity…with suspicion…with greed. Gamble the night away, but whatever you do, don’t leave the house – your family is watching.

June 1-2 spotlights Group; or Marlene is Dead, by Sofia Molimbi, which is not your typical parenthood comedy. Set in modern day, Portland, Oregon, Group follows the lives of five parents and two professors, who are all desperate to salvage their rocky home lives. Professor Marlene’s parenting class becomes an incubator that either kills you or saves you. Structurally, the play moves swiftly from past to present, and back again, creating bitter sweet moments and a deeper level of understanding how we got "here." This fast-paced tragicomedy is an honest portrayal of the struggles of relationships, divorce, fertility, and motherhood.

June 29-30 stages Red Line by Barbara Hume. Both historic and topical, Red Line takes place from 1938 to 1948 in St. Louis depicting the impact of segregation on two young men, one White and one Black, who share backyards in a segregated neighborhood. Their friendship crosses many boundaries testing their friendship and the status quo of racism in their community.

On July 27-28 Theatre 33, Northwest Theatre Workshop, and Hopewell Hub present Fragments, a series of site-specific, devised short plays accompanied by live music, local art exhibits, and wine tastings to celebrate the Hopewell Hub landscape and the region's artistry. August 3-4 it's Wife of Headless Man Investigates Her Own Disappearance by Yussef El Guindi. Salwa thinks she may have been drugged during her interview with tech giant Owen – a payback for her take-down articles about him and his company. How else to explain the chunks of missing time and shifting realities that started taking place after meeting him, including returning home and finding her immigrant husband, Bassem, headless, but still miraculously living and talking. Sometimes we have to travel out of what we know to understand who we really are.

PENNSYLVANIA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL'S 33rd SEASON will run May 29 to August 4 featuring three Shakespeare plays The Comedy of Errors directed by Jessica Bedford; The Merry Wives of Windsor, directed by Matt Pfeiffer and Cymbeline; along with two musicals,The Color Purple directed by Amina Robinson and The Last Five Years; directed by Jason King Jones and, in a new collaboration, PSF will present 1812’s production of The Play That Goes Wrong,d irected by Jennifer Childs.

This theme is reflected in each play or musical we’ve selected,” says Jones, Artistic Director. “We hope the "Persistence of Love" season fosters empathy and ignites meaningful conversations through the medium of theatre."

The Festival will also present a community tour throughout the Lehigh Valley region and will host a Community Day at DeSales on July 6.

RHINOFEST ‘24!
Chicago’s longest running fringe festival returns May 31 - June 30, 2024.

Full Moon Vaudeville traditionally hosts opening night Rhinofest - Venues include: Facility Theatre - Chicago Dramatists - Labyrinth Club - Perceptions Theatre - Experimental Sound Studio - Women and Children First Bookstore.

Rhinofest 2024 submissions are now closed.

In the future: "No submission fees. You fund your production costs. Rhino pays for rent, insurance, promotion, tech support. You produce on a festival lighting grid. Best are shows 60 minutes or less."

According to the organization: " If you have never submitted to the Rhino before, know that it’s quite easy. We don’t charge you a fee to submit! We never have, by the way. All you have to do is have an idea of what you want to make, some technical specifications, cast size, lighting needs, stuff like that. We need to know what the work is probably going to be like and particularly how long it might be, in order to curate the festival with any efficiency and rationale. We are always interested in original plays, but we love solo performance, conceptual things, musical events, puppets, weird lectures, possibly site-responsive work, art work for the lobbies, almost anything you might want to make.

"We want to stress that the Rhinoceros Theater Festival is a place for original work, a safe landing for things you have never done before. We love weird, but we also love straight ahead. The Rhinofest contains multitudes. Making stuff is one antidote to the horror of these times. We will be changing this world, one imagination at a time. ONWARD!"

WHITE NIGHTS FESTIVAL IN ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA
is celebrated June 12- July 2, 2024.

The festival was started by Anatoly Sobchak in 1993. Sobchak was the first mayor of St. Petersburg, and during his tenure, the city evolved into Russia’s cultural and sporting hub. As part of his initiative to develop the city, he developed the idea of a holiday to celebrate Russian culture, especially art and entertainment. The festival had a series of classical ballet and music, opera, and other events at the Mariinsky Theater and Mariinsky Concert Hall.

The Scarlet Sails celebration is the final and best-attended part of the White Nights Festival. It is the most famous public event in St. Petersburg. The spectacular fireworks displays and elaborate performances bring the city to a standstill. The Scarlet Sails — ‘Alye Parusa’ in Russian — has been around since the 1960s and began after World War II when schools in Russia united to celebrate the end of their academic year. The celebration organized in their honor took place on the Neva banks in St. Petersburg. The practice was stopped in 1979 but was revived decades later on June 24, 2005.

In 1990, the White Nights International Marathon and 10K Run through the streets of St. Petersburg became part of the festivities. Over 5,000 runners participated in these events each year, which helped promote the city’s status as Russia’s sports capital. The White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg has grown in popularity across Europe, with other E.U. nations introducing their versions of the holiday to their citizens.

THE 2024 GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY PERFORMING ARTS
is scheduled to take place between June 26 and 30 at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerse, England.

This is the biggest greenfield music & performing arts festival in the world. Glastonbury has long since set the template for all other festivals to aspire to. Glastonbury is held in the stunning Vale of Avalon, a 900-acre site, with an 8-and-a-half mile perimeter, surrounded by mysticism, symbolism, folklore, and religious significance, a place where Glastonbury Abbey monks claimed to have found the bones of King Arthur and his Queen, and where ley-lines are said to meet.

Entering Glastonbury is like entering another world, another ecosystem that exists just outside of our reality - abandoned in favor of an ethos of freedom, expression and good will.

Laid-back affairs appear in the guise of places like the Acoustic areas, or even the West Holts Stage, as well as family areas like Kidz Fields, the Circus fields, and a Theatre stage. For the more alternative among the crowd there is the Field of Avalon, the Tipi Field and Green Fields, leading to the infamous Sacred Space. And don’t forget the after-hours epicentre of the festival, Shangri-La & Arcadia.

Always a lineup to boast about, 2024 will see Coldplay, Dua Lipa, SZA, Shania Twain, LCD Soundsystem, and Cyndi Lauper. Also playing the five-day festival are Little Simz, Idles, Burna Boy, Janelle Monae, PJ Harvey, Keane, Disclosure, The National, Jungle, Jessie Ware, Gossip, Jamie xx, James Blake, Squid, Eliza Rose, Yard Act, Kate Nash, Avril Lavigne, Paloma Faith, King Kruleand many more.

ART AND ABOUT

SLEEPING BEAUTIES: REAWAKENING FASHION
Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion on exhibit through September 2, 2024 Image: Met Fifth Avenue Gallery
on exhibit through September 2, 2024 at the Met Fifth Avenue Gallery in New York City.

The Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, reactivates the sensory capacities of masterworks in the Museum’s collection through first-hand research, conservation analysis, and diverse technologies—from cutting-edge tools of artificial intelligence and computer-generated imagery to traditional formats of x-rays, video animation, light projection, and soundscapes.

When an item of clothing enters the Costume Institute collection, its status is changed forever. What was once a vital part of a person’s life is now a motionless 'rtwork' that can no longer be worn or heard, touched, or smelled. This exhibition reanimates these objects, helping us experience them as they were originally intended—with vibrancy, dynamism, and life.

The exhibition features approximately 220 garments - including 15 significant pieces such as an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth silk satin ball gown — that span over 400 years of history. There are also four centuries of accessories, all visually connected through themes of nature, which also serves as a metaphor for the transience of fashion.

Visitors will be invited to smell the aromatic histories of hats bearing floral motifs; to touch the walls of galleries that will be embossed with the embroidery of select garments; and to experience—via the illusion technique known as Pepper’s ghost—how the "hobble skirt" restricted women’s stride in the early 20th century. Punctuating the galleries will be a series of "sleeping beauties"—garments that can no longer be dressed on mannequins due to their extreme fragility.

According to Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, the exhibition is shaped around three main "zones"— Land, Sea and Sky — that pay tribute to the natural world. "It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion," he is quoted as saying.

The Costume Collection generates thematically-driven special exhibitions that showcase its permanent collection.

JENNY HOLZER: LIGHT LINE on display at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York May 17–September 29, 2024.

Jenny Holzer Installation for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1989). Courtesy of the Guggenheim. In 1989, Jenny Holzer programmed iterations of her Truisms one-liners to scroll, in rhythmic series, along a single strip of LED lights that climbed the spiraled walls of the Guggenheim’s rotunda. Holzer and the museum are honoring the 35th anniversary of that landmark artwork by recreating it—albeit with some 21st-century updates.

In Light Line, Holzer’s hotly-anticipated retrospective, the installation will feature examples from both Truisms and the artist’s related series of text-based artworks, Inflammatory Essays. The LED be shown alongside a collection of pieces spanning Holzer’s career from the 1970s to now, including paintings, works on paper, and inscribed stone sculptures. And as a bonus, another one of the artist’s previous installations at the museum—2008’s façade-covering light projection, For the Guggenheim—will be re-shown during the opening week.

KAWS + WARHOL In celebration of its 30th anniversary, The Warhol Presents KAWS + Warhol, the first exhibition to examine the dark themes present in the work of both artists. From skulls to car crashes, both artists deploy their signature bright colors and pop culture references while also presenting the lurid spectacle of death. The dark undercurrents in the work of KAWS and Warhol are magnified and brought into plain sight by presenting the two artists together for the first time.

KAWS will also respond to Warhol’s embrace of commercialism by presenting a new series of paintings, sculptures, and installations related to his recent commission with General Mills which inserted his signature characters into the packaging for some of America’s most loved cereal boxes including Reese’s Puffs, Count Chocula, and Boo-Berry. The cereal works will be juxtaposed with Warhol’s iconic Brillo Boxes and his lesser-known series of paintings for children.

In response to The Warhol’s new initiative The Pop District, KAWS will also present a monumental wooden sculpture in Pop Park, directly across from the museum and visible from its lobby.

May 18, 2024–January 20, 2025 at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA which is one of four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.

ART ALIVE 2024 at The San Diego Museum of Art in San Diego, CA was an incredible success, drawing nearly 13,000 attendees and raising over $1.2 million for Museum exhibitions, education, outreach, and public programs.

The Museum rotunda was utterly transformed by Meghaa Modi, the Museum's first international floral designer. More than 80 exquisite floral designs adorned the Museum galleries, inspired by works of art from their collection. Over 60 Museum docents were on hand throughout the weekend to provide valuable insights into the art and floral arrangements on display. Bloom Bash was a hit, offering live entertainment, the return of the Ferris wheel on the plaza, culinary delights from 30 top restaurants, and a lavish selection of drinks. Art installations by Nisha K. Sethi and DOTURMINDS (Dot Your Minds) captivated visitors at Bloom Bash. The Garden of Activities in the Museum's outdoor sculpture garden provided hands-on art experiences for artists of all ages.

THE PLASTIC BAG STORE created, written, designed, and directed by Robin Frohardt. Music by Freddi Price. Produced by Pomegranate Arts.

A Tragicomic Ode to the Foreverness of Plastic.

The Plastic Bag Store is a public art installation and immersive film experience by Brooklyn-based artist Robin Frohardt that uses humor, craft, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically, the enduring effects of single-use plastics. The shelves are stocked with thousands of original, hand-sculpted items — produce and meat, dry goods and toiletries, cakes and sushi rolls — all made from discarded, single-use plastics in an endless cacophony of packaging.

In association with the Williamstown Theatre Festival, on display through September 2, 2024 at Mass MoCA'S Building 1 in Williamstown, MA.

SWEET CHARITY

CELEBRATING BROOKE'S 90th ANNIVERSARY
Looking lovely in a a blue midi dress featuring an abstract print, Queen Camilla feeds a carrot (followed by a tickle under the chin) to an adorable donkey during a reception at Buckingham Palace. Photo credit: Ian Jones/The Royal Family/Brooke Charity
founded in 1934, is a United Kingdom-based international equine charity, which focuses on the welfare and care of donkeys, horses and mules. With more than 900 people working helping to deliver services, Brooke is the largest equine charity in the world. A branch is located in the United States.

Queen Camilla, President of Brooke, hosted a reception to mark 90 years of the charity’s work of bringing hope to working horses, donkeys, and mules.

Brooke was founded by Dorothy Brooke, the wife of a British cavalry officer, who sought out the former war horses that had been put to work in Cairo and beyond when the conflict ended in 1918. Her pleas in a letter to the editor of the then Morning Post (now The Telegraph) in 1931 were heard, and with help from the British public, Dorothy raised enough money to buy back 5,000 of the horses. Following this, Dorothy established the Old War Horse Memorial Hospital in Cairo in 1934, and 90 years later, this grew into the global organization it is today. As of 2022/2023, Brooke has supported 1.4 million working horses, donkeys, and mules directly, and 4.2 million through their advocacy work.

Recently, The African Union has opted to ban the donkey skin trade after years of tireless lobbying by Brooke. Signalling an end to the legal slaughter of hundreds of thousands of donkeys.

During the reception, Her Majesty met with ambassadors, guests, and supporters of the charity at the Quadrangle of Buckingham Palace to meet mini ponies, Alfie and LaLa.

The Queen met with Brooke staff and supporters, who last year reached over 10,000 communities worldwide. Following this, Brooke CEO Chris Wainwright gave a speech. Others in attendance included 40 of Brooke’s supporters, such as actors Rory Bremner and Annette Badland; television vet Dr Scott Miller; former newscaster Angela Rippon, Ann Searight, the founder’s granddaughter, and the charity’s patron former journalist and newscaster, Alastair Stewart OBE.

Of course a cake was part of the festivities, with Queen Camilla doing the slicing honors.

Her Majesty has a longstanding relationship with Brooke, holding the role of President since 2006. During the State Visit to Kenya, The Queen saw how the organization is promoting equine welfare as part of Brooke’s East Africa Program. Her Majesty was introduced to a Donkey Care Club, where local children are taught how to look after their donkeys.

In speaking to the gathering Her Majesty, in part, said: "I got completely hooked (on the charity) when I went to visit the headquarters . . . I first heard about it from my father who was in Cairo during the war and he used to tell me what a wonderful charity it was."

For 600 million people in some of the poorest places in the world, 100 million of these animals are the backbone of communities and their best means of making a living. Without healthy working horses, donkeys, and mules, they wouldn’t be able to put food on their tables, send their children to school, or build better futures for themselves and their families.

The work of Brooke not only improves the lives of working animals, but also gives people in the developing world the opportunity to gain employment.

SPREADING THE WORD

DEAR MR. THOMAS: A NEW PLAY FOR VOICES by Christopher Monger. A dramatic reading of a new play centered on iconic Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

The one-act play, written by Christopher Monger, was specially commissioned for The 92nd Street Y's 150th anniversary, and it details the back story of Thomas’ iconic play, Under Milk Wood – which premiered at 92NY on May 14, 1953 — as well as the poet’s time in New York and Wales in the early 1950s.

The cast includes actress Kate Burton, whose father Richard Burton popularized Under Milk Wood on BBC Radio in 1954 and starred in the 1972 film adaption. It also includes the actors Lorna Bennett, Gopal Divan, Taylor Trensch and Betsy Zajko.

The event will take place on International Dylan Thomas Day, Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 92Y in NYC.

By 1950, Dylan Thomas was a famous poet, and a play about a day in the life of a Welsh fishing village, a 'play for voices' had been rattling around in his head for some time. Thomas was determined to finish the play, Under Milk Wood, but there would be several twists and turns before it would make its premiere on the stage of the 92nd Street Y.

Dear Mr. Thomas illuminates the fascinating back story of this specific period in Dylan Thomas’ life, and how it was set into motion by a letter he received years earlier from John Malcolm Brinnin, the 92nd Street Y’s Poetry Center Director. The play, which centers on Thomas (Matthew Rhys) is an intimate portrait of an iconic poet struggling to remain dedicated to his craft and bring a masterpiece to life — and how that struggle impacted those around him, including his wife, Caitlin, and the man who brought him to New York via that fateful letter, John Malcolm Brinnin.

Dear Mr. Thomas: A New Play for Voices is an interpretation of events and not a definitive biography. The play includes several works and letters by the great poet, and it highlights a seminal moment in his history — and 92NY’s history.

THE GIL GUTIERREZ TRIO performs at Birdland Jazz in NYC on May 17, 18 and 19th.

STEVE GUTTENBERG IN CONVERSATION WITH TONY DANZA: TIME TO THANK: CAREGIVING FOR MY HERO takes place in person and on line from the 92Y in New York City on Tuesday, May 21, 6 pm ET.

Join beloved actors Steve Guttenberg and Tony Danza on Guttenberg’s life in Hollywood, their long friendship, and Guttenberg’s new memoir about caring for his aging father, Time to Thank.

In 1976, when he was 17, Steve Guttenberg’s parents gave him $300 for a two-week trip to try his hand at film acting in Hollywood. The moment he arrived he immediately started trying to sneak into studios, got into Paramount, commandeered an office in the Lucille Ball Makeup Building, strung a phone from the water stage and started making phone calls to casting directors, agents, and producers. But after a year in Hollywood, he decided the culture wasn’t for him, and at the request of his father he flew back East and became a college student. Three months later, he got an offer to co-star with Gregory Peck in The Boys from Brazil, and Steve was off and running again — going on to make films like Diner; Police Academy; Cocoon, and Three Men and a Baby (to name a few) grossing over a billion dollars.

But when his father was diagnosed with kidney failure, Steve didn’t hesitate to step into a wholly unexpected role: caretaker. Through the prism of the relationship with his father, Time to Thank looks back on his early life in Queens; his career as a rising Hollywood star, making those iconic films; and the painful and moving work of helping care for his ailing father — the hero and strength of the family. Hear Guttenberg and Danza as they discuss — with wit, empathy, and charm — the story of Guttenberg’s lifetime.

FILMING IN IRELAND

The Giant Causeway in Northern Ireland has been named Northern Ireland's "most popular filming location," according to a new study by City Tours Belfast. It is a popular setting for filmmakers, with Hellboy II and Dracula Untold both filmed there.

Located in County Antrim, the historic UNESCO site is known for its iconic hexagonal basalt stones and its central part in the legend of Finn McCool which was first documented by Irish monks in the Medieval period but could be much older. According to the tale, Finn Mac Cool created the Causeway so that he could reach Scotland and fight his rival, the Scottish giant Benandonner.

Chris Graham, of City Tours Belfast, asserts Northern Ireland's increase in filmmaker popularity is largely due to the "Game of Thrones effect".

The firm's study analyzed IMDB’s top 50 films and shows which feature filming locations in Northern Ireland. Each location was ranked based on the total volume of Instagram posts and Google rating to reveal the most famous filming spot in the region.

2. Mourne Mountains - Robert Eggers’ Nordic epic The Northman used many locations across Northern Ireland, including the Mourne Mountains, where the sweeping backdrop sets the scene for a Viking ball game. Other productions that used the Mournes include Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves and Game of Thrones.

3. The Dark Hedges - The famous route of intertwining beech trees is synonymous with Game of Thrones as the King’s Road, featuring as one of the prime destinations on Northern Ireland’s Game of Thrones tours. While the 18th-century trees shot to worldwide fame via the HBO show, they also served as a filming location for the 2017 American blockbuster Transformers: The Last Knight.

4. Titanic Belfast - The world-famous museum, which details the story of the famous ship from its development in the early 1900s to its tragic end in 1912 ranked fourth in the study. Despite its status as a museum and visitor centre in Belfast, its halls can also be seen in the 2014 TV mini-series Halo Nightfall, produced by legendary film director Ridley Scott. More recently, the museum served as a secret rendezvous in series 2 of the hit BBC series Blue Lights, set in Belfast.

5. Strangford Lough - Visitors to the UK’s largest sea lough can discover an abundance of wildlife, which is why it is widely recognized as one of Europe’s key wildlife habitats. Local BBC crime drama Bloodlands featured Strangford Lough prominently. The plot revolves around a car with a suicide note being recovered from the lough, with groups able to admire the scenic views on a visit.

6. Dunluce Castle - The North Coast medieval structure is one of Northern Ireland’s many Game of Thrones filming locations, where it spotlights as the House of Greyjoy in the Iron Islands. It is the region’s most popular Game of Thrones castle filming location, ranking above Castle Ward, aka Winterfell.

7. Tollymore Forest - Tollymore Forest is the only forest park in Northern Ireland to be named among its most famous filming locations. The County Down site was featured in Game of Thrones, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves; Dublin Murders, Philomena, and many more.

8. Mussenden Temple - Yet another Game of Thrones location to feature in the ranking, the historic building claimed eighth place in the study. The cliff-top structure served as Dragonstone in season 2 of Game of Thrones, pictured in the backdrop as Stannis Baratheon drew his flaming sword Lightbringer on Downhill Beach.

9. Belfast City Hall - interior was used in The Lost City of Z, starring Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson.

10. Mount Stewart - was used in several productions, including Your Highness; Philomena, and Dracula Untold. Its gardens are made up of smaller individual spaces to explore, while groups can also view red squirrels, pine martens, badgers and a variety of birds feeding and playing at the Squirrel Hide.
