MARGUERITE THE MUSICAL IS ELEVATING AND INSPIRING

Easter is next Sunday, so there is no better time to listen to Marguerite. Some might call it a religious experience, but it's an all encompassing human experience. You've never met anyone like Marguerite.

Tony winner Cady Huffman stunningly plays her to perfection.

The original 30-tract cast album has been released on Broadway Records.

This production is for everyone - Catholics, other faiths or no faith at all.

Based on the heroic, adventurous life of fearless pioneer and Canada's first female saint Marguerite Bourgeoys, and told through soaring song and monologue, this one woman musical recounts Marguerite's death-defying journey to bring liberated women to the New World and help build the city of Montreal.

Featuring book and lyrics by award-winning librettist Anton Dudley, and music by Broadway songwriter Michael Cooper, with arrangements and orchestrations by Joseph Trefler, Marguerite is an inspiring story of inclusion, love, and living life without walls.

(not to be confused with the musical Marguerite by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg, Jonathan Kent, Herbert Kretzmer and Michel Legrand, which is about the notorious mistress of a high ranking German officer.)

Marguerite Bourgeoys, C.N.D. (17 April 1620 – 12 January 1700), was a French nun and founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal in the colony of New France, now part of Québec, Canada. Born in Troyes, she traveled to Fort Ville-Marie (now Montreal) by 1653, where she developed the convent and educated young girls, the poor, and children of First Nations until shortly before her death in early 1700, including starting public schooling in Montreal. She is also significant for developing one of the first uncloistered religious communities in the Catholic Church. Declared "venerable" by the pope in 1878, she was canonized in 1982 and declared a saint by the Catholic Church, the first female saint of Canada.

Directed by Dev Bondarin, Marguerite showcases the beautiful voice of Huffman who sings a capella in Tract 1 and then introduces the next selections as well as delivering all of the dialogue which has Huffman explaining the background of the woman who would change Canada.

Fighting for women's liberation - before there was such a movement - Marguerite was determined to establish the first nonclostured nunnery. Instead of support, she was criticized by the judgemental community as an "embarrassment to women" and to those cloistered nuns who have "given their life to God."

This is a fascinating, informative, moving and entertaining one woman show that will leave you appreciating not only Sister Marguerite but the enormous talents of Cady Huffman and composers Dudley and Cooper.

Huffman's narrative segments provide a fascinating recounting of history, including the disclosure that Notre Dame kept slaves.

A variety of tempos and moods spotlights Huffman's enormous speaking and singing abilities. Backed by only a piano expertly played by Yan Li and Luke Krafka's finger work and bowing expertise on the cello, Huffman soars with overflowing talent as her singing and speaking performance ranges from bitter, pithy and sarcastic to angry and dramatic to pure reverence. Tract 26 Spectre at the Feast is showstopping.

The instrumental version of My Prayer Tract 20 is awesome.

A total listening treat which belongs in everyone's Easter basket.

The Fashion and Influence of Véronique and Gregory Peck, now on view at the Denver Art Museum. The exhibition presents 100 ensembles by 15 different couturiers and designers from the wardrobe of Parisian writer, philanthropist, and influencer Véronique Peck. It also features one of Gregory Peck's tuxedos, film clips, and never-before-seen photographs.

A selection of haute couture, fashion sketches, photographs, film clips, family snapshots, and documents are being exhibited publicly for the first time, providing a unique look into the style of one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples. Through more than four decades of material from the 1950s to the 1990s, the presentation provides an overview of how fashion changed as the roles of women in society evolved in the 20th century. In conjunction with the exhibition, Véronique and Gregory’s daughter, Cecilia Peck Voll, has gifted the Denver Art Museum 20 of her mother’s iconic looks for the museum’s collection.

Paris to Hollywood, organized by the Denver Art Museum and curated by Florence Müller, the DAM’s Avenir Foundation Curator of Textile Art and Fashion, and designed by architect Brian Dale and designer Meredith Dale, both co-founders of Sort Studio, will be on view through July 18, 2021.

Divided into nine sections organized thematically and chronologically, the exhibition displays iconic milestones in the history of fashion such as the mini dress and pantsuits of André Courrèges, whose futurist style was celebrated by the fashion magazines in 1965 as the "Courrèges bomb." Véronique is praised for introducing Courrèges to the U.S. in the 1960s. A selection of dresses, demonstrating the meticulous artistic creativity that went into the creation of these garments, will reveal Véronique’s talent for choosing the best designer pieces, emblematic of each season and occasion. Her wardrobe—which includes many unique samples from the fashion shows of Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy—is a testament to the fact that leading designers viewed her as a fashion ambassador and influencer of her time.

The Drug Enforcement Administration Educational Foundation (DEAEF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a goal to educate the public on the costs and consequences of illegal drugs in society.

The foundation supports the DEA through outreach, advocacy and educational programs.

With youth mentorship programs like the Youth Dance Program, the DEAEF provides free afterschool activities to promote fun, healthy and expressive art forms in over fifty cities. Traveling museum exhibits create interactive experiences for students, teachers and parents to learn about the costs and consequences of illegal drug use.

Pig In Boots an alternative Pantomine by Richard O'Brien the creator of the Rocky Horror picture show, heard on Wireless Theatre.

Sound effects from The Foley Brothers who are grandsons of famed Hollywood sound designer Jack Foley.

This review now contains a story within a review. Jack Foley deserves to be identified.

Jack Donovan Foley (April 12, 1891 – November 9, 1967) was the developer of many sound effect techniques used in filmmaking. He is credited with developing a unique method for performing sound effects live and in synchrony with the picture during a film's post-production - such titles as foley sheets, foley footsteps, foley reels, foley walker, foley editor,

Born in Yorkville, N.Y. in 1891, and raised in the Seagate section of Coney Island, hee went to Public School No. 158. His classmates were James Cagney, Arthur Murray, and Bert Lahr. His first job was as a general order clerk on the New York docks. During this period, Jack met Cary Grant, who was a stilt walker at Coney Island. Dissatisfied with the weather, Jack moved to California. His first job was as a double and stunt man. Inserts are the close-ups of movements, such as a hand picking up a gun, which are not bothered with during normal shooting. Jack prepared the sets, graphics, props, models, whatever was necessary, either doing it himself or arranging for it to be done. Jack moved to Bishop during World War I, and served his country as part of The American Defense Society, a group guarding the water supply of Los Angeles to prevent sabotage-poison being put into the water. In that capacity me met many in the movie business.

Making the most of his studio contacts, Jack sold scripts to Universal and began directing. He also had a natural instinct for sound.

When not busy directing silent films, Jack was busy directing inserts for the studio. Inserts are the close-ups of movements, such as a hand picking up a gun, which are not bothered with during normal shooting. Jack prepared the sets, graphics, props, models, whatever was necessary, either doing it himself or arranging for it to be done, according to his Film Sound biography.

The movie Spartacus showed scenes of slaves walking in leg chains. The director was all set to return to Italy and restage the scene to capture the sound effects. Jack stepped in and did the whole sequence with footsteps and key chains.

The movie Pink Submarine needed a comical motor sound. Jack is reputed to have reversed a burp and looped it for the effect.

The director of a melodrama had a step rigged to make a squeak when the leading lady descended a flight of stairs. After many unsuccessful takes, Jack was called in. He explained how to do it, "I won't add the creak until the film has been cut together into a rough print. The I'll park myself in an old rocking chair in front of a microphone-and when the lady's foot hits the fourth step, I'll just rock, myself back slowly," according to his bio.

Jack found himself creating footsteps and body movement sounds for stars such as Laurence Olivier, Rock Hudson, Kim Novak, and Sandra Dee. When later in his life he shared some of his work experiences he estimated that he walked 5000 miles in the studio doing footsteps. He characterized the footsteps of stars in this manner: "Rock Hudson is a solid stepper; Tony Curtis has a brisk foot; Audie Murphy is springy; James Cagney is clipped; Marlon Brando soft; John Saxon nervous," according to The Vintage News, according to DigitalCommons.

"Women are the toughest to imitate," he disclosed. "My 250 pounds may have something to do with it, but the important thing is their steps are quicker and closer together. I get winded doing leading ladies. Jean Simmons is almost, not quite, the fastest on her screen feet in all of Hollywood. She's topped only by June Allyson. I can't keep up with her at all."

Jack received a number of awards, including the Golden Reel Award, voted by his fellow sound effect practitioners, members of the Motion Picture Sound Editors. Jack passed away in 1967.

Mariele Runacre Temple directs the cast which includes: Ceri Gifford, Kevin Haney, Peter Davis, Naomi Bowen, Reuben Anderson, Trevor Cuthbertson, Jade Allen, Gareth Davies, Nic Van Gelder, Faye Honeysett, James McQuillan, Neil Frost & David Beck.

While Broadway shows frequently have pre curtain up announcements, such as don't open hard candy because the wrapper sounds bother the actors, the audience for Pig In Boots is admonished not to use the hand dryers in the rest rooms because the sound filters into the showroom.

Pig In Boots is about Tom-Tom the Piper's Son who lives with his witchcraft practicing mother and drunkard father.

There is a talking kettle.

After listening to the magic kettle, Tom-Tom conspires to steal Patsy the Piglett (with two t's it is emphasized) from her pig pen. She's a cute porker who Tom-Tom hopes will make him rich by her winning the Prettiest Piglet Contest. His parents agree to help Tom-Tom steal Patsy - who is desperate for bright lights, excitement and jelly bellies and thus willingly goes with Tom-Tom.

Tom-Tom's parents view helping Patsy escape as a win-win situation. She'll either win the beauty contest gaining all the money and fame which comes her way; or, if she doesn't, the other option is that she becomes breakfast.

Tom-Tom sets out on a dangerous path to fame and fortune with the aid of Pasty Pig.

Their get rich plan becomes a pyramid scheme, selling non-existent real estate to gullible rich people.

As Patsy eventually rationalizes - "People who should be bright enough to hang onto their money are getting a lesson - it's called tough love."

As it pointed out - Castle in the Air (pipe dreams) - selling an idea - "people do it all the time it's called a mortgage."

In their cross-country trek to the big city of Panto-Opolis, they encounter a growing mix of characters. A few of them are Petunia, who attends a posh boarding school and views herself as "so liberal" that she has "spoken to the cleaning lady."

Along the way Tom-Tom and Patsy change their names and background, spinning a convincing yarn appropriate for whomever they are trying to accommodate such as calling themselves cousins when they meet Mr. Kindly Old Boy and then morph into upper crust for Lord Hugo Yourway who attended the Hoity-Toity Boarding School.

Hugo invites Patsy and Tom-Tom to come to his castle and plies them with wine.

The adventures and misadventures of Patsy and Tom-Tom are cleverly laid out including both of them being forced to go on the run from the villainous Squire Braggett and the homicidal Butcher with a Very Sharp Knife.

This is an easy to enjoy audience participation production in which the patrons are cued when and how to respond, which adds to the fun. There are also insider jokes such as referring to Equity and requests to the stage manager.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL ABDUCTION DAY was yesterday, Saturday, March 21, 2021. So, if you are missing anyone . . .

4th ANNUAL GARRY MARSHALL THEATRE NEW WORKS FESTIVAL is now accepting submissions. The New Works Festival will be held virtually September 24-26, 2021.

The 2021 GMT New Works Festival will present five finalist playwrights in livestream virtual readings. Each script will be paired with Los Angeles actors and directors collaborating with the playwrights in their development process. GMT Producer, Joseph Leo Bwarie welcomes back Festival producers Jonathan Muñoz-Proulx and Kimberly Arnold.

Garry Marshall Theatre’s mission is to present innovative performances, offer educational opportunities, and champion connection through storytelling. With this in mind, GMT is entering its fourth New Works Festival with a focus on new work that is uniquely theatrical. Festival producers are increasingly interested in diverse new work that reflects an original concept or theme, and characters whose language expresses their individual worldview.

GMT 2021 New Works Festival will employ a ‘blinded’ submission and review process to select its five finalists. GMT is accepting full-length plays that reflect a complete evening of theatre, with requiring no more than six actors (doubling is permitted if clearly indicated in the script). Eligible plays should not have received a past professional production. Script submissions require a $20 fee that supports the festival submission and review process. Finalist playwrights will receive a small honorarium.

Last year’s five finalists allowed for over 50 actors, directors, stage managers, producers and playwrights to collaborate in the development process of five new works. The 2020 finalists were: From Out Beyond My Shame by Shawn Christopher Lovell Nabors, O-Dogg: An Angeleno Take On Othello by Alex Alpharaoh, Crabs In A Bucket by Bernardo Cubria, Twenty-Two by Erin Considine, and Thoughts And Prayers by Barbara Blumenthal-Ehrlich.

Submissions accepted through April 19, 2021.

YALE PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL GOES VIRTUAL Over two weekends in March, the Yale Playwrights Festival invited playwrights to present their in-progress plays to a Zoom audience and gather feedback.

During the festival, on March 12, 13, 19 and 20, thirteen undergraduates conducted live readings of their plays, The readings were free and open to the public.

“The amount of information that a writer can get just by hearing the actors perform the words that they have written,” said Shilarna Stokes ’94, lecturer in theater and performance studies and a mentor for the festival. “All of that is information that a playwright can’t really get just from having a lot of individual readers.”

The students selected for the festival were each paired with two mentors: a Yale faculty member and a professional not affiliated with the University. The playwrights first worked on their plays with these mentors and then coordinated with a student director and actors for their play’s reading at the festival.

THE ACTORS' GANG THEATER has announced a new Axis Mundi evening as part of its digital season: Axis Mundi – In Conversation with Tim Robbins and theatrical legend and visionary director, Peter Brook. The free event, produced in partnership with Fundación Teatro a Mill, will be translated into French and Spanish and will be streamed Thursday, March 25th at 7 pm PST through Zoom and Facebook Live. The live translation is only available through Zoom.

Brook, the first person to win the International Ibsen Award, has dedicated his life to demonstrating the importance of a living theater, a theater that has a unique and powerful potential to transform audiences and shift a cultural landscape. Throughout his career, Brook has distinguished himself in different genres including theater, opera, and cinema and he has written books that have inspired generations of actors and directors.

Hosted by The Actors’ Gang’s Artistic Director, Tim Robbins, Axis Mundi is a bi-monthly series of public forums that introduces the audience to creative minds from all around the world. Previous Axis Mundi evenings featured visionary artists such as Ariane Mnouchkine and Guillermo Caldéron. With each conversation, the theater company is bringing together artists who shape cultures and asking vital questions about the future of theater and the arts and what it means to create in pandemic times.

ON MARCH 25, NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR DAY Joan Barkley Wells and Elsie Shemin Roth, daughters of WWI Medal of Honor Recipients John Lewis Barkley and William Shemin, will meet for the first time in a conversation about courage, sacrifice and legacy.

The pair will be joined by Congressional Medal of Honor Society executive director of education Cathy Ehlers Metcalf, daughter of WWII Medal of Honor Recipient Walter Ehlers.

Presented by the World War I Museum in Kansas City, this virtual event takes place at 7 p.m. and is in partnership with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

ROUNDABOUT THEATRE COMPANY has announced The Refocus Project, an annual program dedicated to elevating rarely produced and formerly marginalized theatrical voices from communities underrepresented or historically overlooked in the American theatre.

The Refocus Project will feature a robust selection of materials, available to industry professionals and the public. Beginning April 23, a resource library built to encourage and assist with future productions of each title will be available in addition to the launch of a weekly online play reading series featuring the selected plays. Roundabout will work with theater makers and artistic directors nationwide to encourage viewership and future engagement in the plays, with the intended goal of future productions of these works at theatres across the country.

Roundabout’s 2021-2022 Broadway season will begin with Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress, directed by Charles Randolph-Wright. Childress is one of the first five playwrights in The Refocus Project.

The Refocus Project will also offer historical information, educational tools, panel discussions with artists, a “Literary Ancestry” essay series curated by Dave Harris (Roundabout’s Tow Foundation Playwright-in-Residence) and a series finale Community Conversation hosted by Roundabout Education. A partnership with The New York Public Library – spanning its branches, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and Library for the Performing Arts – will further engage audiences in these offerings.

The first series of play readings, presented in association with Black Theatre United, will spotlight twentieth-century Black plays and their playwrights: Angelina Weld Grimké, Shirley Graham Du Bois, Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Childress and Samm-Art Williams.

FINAL OVATION



LOU OTTENS cassette tape inventor and music pioneer died on March 6, 2021 in Duizel, the village where he lived. He was 94 years old.

The quick-thinking Dutch engineer wasn’t impressed by cumbersome reel to reel decks, so decided to shrink things down. Quoted by NRC Handelsblad, he said the move was borne “out of irritation”. His decision changed listening and made car journeys more entertaining.

In 1952, Ottens was hired by Philips. He started in the mechanization department of the Main Industry Group in Eindhoven. In 1957, he transferred to a newly opened Philips factory in Hasselt, Belgium. At the time, this factory mainly produced audio equipment, including turntables, tape recorders, and loudspeakers.

In 1960, Ottens became the head of the new product development department in Hasselt. While in this position, he led the development of Philips' first portable tape recorder, the EL 3585. This project proved to be quite successful, with over 1 million units being sold.

The early 1960s saw the compact cassette with its plastic casing debut at the Berlin Radio electronics fair. It was billed using the slogan ‘Smaller than a pack of cigarettes!’

Ottens patented the format as other manufacturers tried to get in on the act. Working with Philips and also Sony, his design was “confirmed as the patented cassette,” writes BBC News “after a number of Japanese companies reproduced similar tapes in a number of sizes.”

Crucially the deal included both the cassette and the player. To use one, customers needed to buy the other.

As reported by BBC News, approx 100 billion cassettes have been sold over the past 60-odd years.

Ottens was also involved in bringing the CD to mass market. He believed it delivered ultimate sound quality and dismissed modern day enthusiasm for cassettes. In 1988 he took the role of Chairman at the Dutch Association for Logistics Management.

JAMES LEVINE former Metropolitan Opera Music died March 9, 2021 in Palm Springs, CA of natural causes. He was 77.

The gifted conductor spent more than four decades at The Met helming 2,552 appearances. He wielded immense influence in the classical music world but his reputation was severely tarnished when he was publicly accused by nine men of sexual abuse.

He also held leadership positions with the Ravinia Festival, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1980 he started the Lindemann Young Artists Development Program, and trained promising singers, conductors, and musicians for professional careers.

He received 8 Grammy Awards, National Medal of Arts in 1997; Kennedy Center Honors in 2003; and in addition to numerous other awards he received honorary doctorates from the University of Cincinnati, the New England Conservatory of Music, Northwestern University, the State University of New York, and the Juilliard School.

DANA CARTER LATHAM had multiple successful careers. First, as a child actor and then as a recording engineer, died March 1, 2021 in Los Angeles. He was 65.

As a child actor he appeared on such shows as The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Dr. Kildare.

As a recording engineer his clients included Toto, Hall and Oates, and Cher.
