BROADWAY CAST RECORDING OF & JULIET PERFECT SUMMER LISTENING
Max Martin is a Swedish hitmaker who has devised a clever way to reinvent his own songs, taking advantage of his 25 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1998. We not only know the tunes but then Martin decides to upend the most oft told love story of all time Romeo and Juliet. This screw ball idea shouldn't have worked, but it does - delightfully.
The award winning & Juliet at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City, flips the script on the greatest love story ever told, imagining what would happen next if Juliet hadn’t ended it all over Romeo, and got a second chance at life and love - on her terms. Juliet’s new story bursts to life through a playlist of pop anthems as iconic as her name, again, all written by Max Martin and his collaborators.
Music orchestrated by Bill Sherman and Dominic Fallacaro D provides a seminal lesson on the importance of arrangements and orchestrations, as the song list includes songs made famous by Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Katy Perry and more.
This production has, among others, a Tony nomination for Best Orchestrations.
If you're tryng to relate to a teenager, this score is for you. It's a rock score, but not the type of rock that is grating or makes your ears bleed. This is dancing pop anthems rock. Perfect for exercising or getting you out of bed in the morning.
The Broadway cast recording also has perfect sound balance, which also helps for listening pleasure. Yes, after awhile the beat starts to sound the same, but consider the hits including in this recording and what else would you expect?
While a recording from the London cast was laid down in 2019 this recording features the exceptional Broadway cast: Philippe Arroyo as Francois - Lorna Courtney as Juliet - Melanie La Barrie as Angélique - Stark Sands as Shakespeare - Justin David Sullivan as May - Tony winner Paulo Szot as Lance - Ben Jackson Walker as Romeo - Betsy Wolfe as Anne - Brandon Antonio as Richard - Michael Iván Carrier as Thomas - Nico DeJesus as Cuthbert - Nicholas Edwards as Lord Capulet and Sly - Virgil Gadson as Augustine - Bobby "Pocket" Horner as Rumour - Joomin Hwang as Kempe - Megan Kane as Lucy - Alaina Vi Maderal as Gwynn - Daniel J. Maldonado as Fletcher - Joe Moeller as Henry - Brittany Nicholas as Margaret - Veronica Otim as Lady Capulet and Nell - Jasmine Rafael as Imogen - Matt Raffy as Gregory - Tiernan Tunnicliffe as Eleanor and Benvolio - Rachel Webb as Judith.
Paulo Szot is a Brazilian operatic baritone singer and actor. He made his opera debut in 1997 and his international career has included performances with the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala di Milano, Opera de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opera Australia, Liceo de Barcelona, among many others. On Broadway he got hearts fluttering when he played Emile de Becque in South Pacific delivering show stopping numbers such as This Nearly was Mine.
In this production he plays Lance, a wealthy man Juliet meets while in Paris. As Lance he's a father on the brink of figuring out his relationship with his son. As it is explained, Lance starts the show as a "blocking character" keeping his son from following his heart, but by the end of & Julie Lance embodies the spirit of radical inclusion. He's the only parent in the story who actually listens to his child. Szot can be heard singing Katy Perry's Teenage Dream/ Break Free; Everybody and Shape of my Heart.
A movie version of & Juliet would be a chick flick. As a stage production it's a girls rule, jukebox musical. With layered humor and an abundance of twists and turns. There are so many tropes that if you haven't seen the live production listening to the recording won't provide you with the plot-line. Just listen and enjoy the music. If you've seen the production, then the recording is a nice souvenir and reminder.
Juliet (Lorna Courtney) doesn’t die but rather wakes up dazed, confused and emotional. After all, Romeo had committed suicide. She laments in Baby One More Time, performed in front of Romeo's sarcophagus while wearing her funeral dress accessorized by
headphones and a Walkman. The recording comes with a booklet filled with pictures. This ditzy story then moves to Paris where Juliet is presented with a new boyfriend — François du Bois (Philippe Arroyo) whom she does agree to marry. Oops! . . . I Did It Again. However, François du Bois is enamored with another. The plot now twists its way through several Shakespearean minefields; comic mismatches, reunited lovers (Paulo Szotas as Lance and Melanie La Barrie as Angélique) and the return of yet another character from the grave - yes, Romeo.
Betsy Wolfe as Anne delivers a heartfelt, splendid rendition of the Celine Dion hit That’s the Way It Is.
The 30 songs are snippets - no long, drawn out, dramatic Broadway ballads. Although there are a few rhythm changes, such as the second number I Want It That Way which begins more soothing before breaking out into rock. Third cut Baby, One More Time features a more pronounced, dramatic beat. - basically this is a rock album and tempos traditionally turn into similarities.
Blow is revved up, high octane with the following number I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman being melodic, with a soft piano and soul searching lyrics, sung by Justin David Sullivan with an assistant from Lorna Courtney.
Overprotected is talk-sung by Philippe Arroyo and Courtney. Next up is a take no prisoners, beat heavy Confident which almost defies you not to stand up and move. Paulo Szot's dramatic, well trained voice comes through on Teenage Dream/Break Free countered by the rocker voice of Melanie La Barrie. I Kissed A Girl is precisely the same beat as on the hit version by Katy Perry. The beat continues with It's My Life. - and that's just the first half.
One of the most beautiful renditions is the 20th cut -That's The Way It Is with beautiful harmony by -Betsy Wolfe and Lorna Courtney.
Track 25 Shape of My Heart features Szot in as close to a traditional Broadway delivery that you'll hear on this recording. Backed by a piano, Szot is joined by Philippe Arroyo and Justin David Sullivan.
#27 Roar (Eye of the Tiger) is a showstopper. Lorna Courtney's voice is outragiously fantastic.
In addition to photographs the booklet concentrates on providing proper legal credit for each and every number. No lyrics or scene descriptions.
A fun listen. Perfect for summertime lying on the beach and listening through your headphones.

Estimate: 20,000 - 30,000 GBP.
Freddie Mercury’s autograph working lyrics for Bohemian Rhapsody (c. 1974). Written in black and blue ballpoint pen and pencil, this early draft for Bohemian Rhapsody encompasses all sections of this most ambitious of Queen hits, which today still ranks as the third best-selling UK single of all time. As with many of the lyrics held within this collection, the draft text is written across 15 pages of stationery from the now defunct 'British Midland Airways'. Revealing untold insights into other possible directions this song could have taken, one page – for example – reveals an early alternative title for the song as "Mongolian Rhapsody" with the words first underlined and then crossed out and replaced with the words, "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Estimate: £800,000 - £1.2 million.

SPREADING THE WORD
THE QUEEN'S READING ROOM FESTIVAL
Her Majesty Queen Camilla's love of literature is well documented and Hampton Court Palace will stage a magnificent literary festival on June 11, 2023 with The Queen's Reading Room.
The event ws announced with Dame Judi Dench reading from William Shakespeare's Sonnet 116 in a promotional trailer.
On the program - talks from authors such as Dame Judi Dench, David Olusoga, Kamila Shamsie, Ben Macintyre and Ken Follett.
The festival follows the success of Her Majesty's book club, which launched on Instagram in January 2021 and has since amassed over 160k followers internationally.
First up will be the award-winning smash-hit comedy, Austentatious. The cast will don period costumes and improvise a hilarious new Jane Austen novel, inspired entirely by a title dreamt up by HM Queen Camilla.
Organizers promise the event will be 'a literary festival like no other' – and will break the mold of the traditional stuffy conventions of 'authors plugging their own books'. The Queen has been "hands on" in organizing the day-long extravaganza.
The festival will also honor the life and work of Wolf Hall novelist Dame Hilary Mantel, despite the late author's controversial relationship with the Royal Family. Mantel had some unkind words for Kate, the Princess of Wales during her time as the Duchess of Cambridge. Never-the-less Mantel's memorial with the Royal Society of Literature will feature David Olusoga, Kamila Shamsie, Philippa Gregory, Ben Miles and Dame Harriet Walters.
That will be followed by An Eye for a Spy - Espionage writing in fiction and non-fiction: featuring Ben Macintyre, Ken Follett and Robert Harris who is one of King Charles' favorite writers.
Dame Judi Dench will be in conversation with Gyles Brandreth reflecting on her life and career, as well as her love for William Shakespeare.
Cartoon Gallery will feature Kate Mosse - Warrior Queens & Quiet Revolutionaries: How Women (also) Built the World.
The Sinister Everyday is next and features the fact and fiction of crime writing with Peter James.
The Queen launched The Reading Room, which recommends four books four times a year, on Instagram in January 2021. It is hoped the festival will become one of Camilla's 'legacy' projects by inspiring more people to take up reading.
June 11 at Hampton Court Palace.
BERNADETTE PETERS IN CONCERT will be presented June 9-11, 2023 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California. This will be the culminating event of Pasadena Playhouse’s six-month-long celebration of the works and impact of Stephen Sondheim, the first major festival honoring his legacy since his passing in 2021.
One of Broadway’s brightest stars and Sondheim’s most stunning muse, Bernadette Peters will offer an unforgettable evening of song from the Broadway shows she’s received accolades for, as well as from all her Grammy Award winning and nominated albums. A glamorous evening as only Bernadette Peters can do.

HANG IN THERE
DANNY BONADUCE 63, has announced that he will undergo brain surgery.
According to an interview he gave to TMZ the actor disclosed that even after going to see "over 100 doctors" - "nobody could figure out" -what was causing his slurred speech and balance issues, then one doctor finally provided a diagnosis: hydrocephalus.
According to Mayo Clinic, hydrocephalus, which occurs most frequently among infants and adults 60 and over, is the buildup of fluid in the cavities deep within the brain, which can damage brain tissues and cause a range of brain function problems.
"Currently, it looks like that's what I was having," the Partridge Family star told TMZ, admitting he "can't figure out what caused it, because I've done so many stupid things."
Examples he provided included: On a reality TV show, taking a guitar to his head - punched in the face by Jose Canseco, a 250-pound professional athlete.
Mayo Clinic notes that traumatic brain injury could be one possible cause of hydrocephalus.
In the brain surgery, Bonaduce's doctors will place a shunt in his head to drain the excess liquid into a "drainboard."
"From what I hear, if the diagnosis is correct and it's hydrocephalus, it will be 50 percent better right out [of surgery]," he said, before sharing why he doesn't "want to get my hopes up too much that I'll be cured."
"Unfortunately right now... I will be completely bummed out if this doesn't work," he admitted. "I can't walk correctly. I just can't. Ten percent would be great, but I'm going for a full-blown [fix]... I'm never going to run track, I'm never gonna box again, but if I can get from here to the kitchen on my own, bravo!"

ED AMES singer and TV star died in Los Angeles from Alzheimer's disease on May 21, 2023. He was 95.
Ames rose to fame in the 1950s in a pop quartet with three of his brothers, Joe, Gene and Vic. Known as The Ames Brothers, they had several hits and became fixtures on variety shows and in clubs. But the constant touring and recording wore them down. They cut 40 albums and were constantly on the road. When he arrived home unexpectedly and his wife called to their 3-year-old daughter: "Who is it?" The girl replied, "One of the Ames Brothers."
"That did it," he told a reporter. "My brothers and I agreed that we had all had it and should go our separate ways." The group, which was earning $20,000 a week, played its last engagement at the Sahara in Las Vegas on New Year's 1961.
After the group split, Ames topped the charts multiple times on his own.
Ed was the most successful solo artist of the group, with chart-topping hits My Cup Runneth Over; Time, Time and When the Snow Is on the Roses.
"I’ve been very blessed to have had an exciting career," he said in 2007.
Ames was the last surviving member of the Ames Brothers. Vic died in 1978, Gene in 1997 and Joe in December 2007.
Before he found success as a solo singer he paid the bills by appearing on Broadway. In was in a production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible.
He joined the traveling company of Gower Champion's Carnival and transferred to the New York company until the show's final performance.
Ames earned top money at Las Vegas casinos and in hotel supper clubs and toured extensively in the musicals Man of La Mancha; Fiddler on the Roof; South Pacific and I Do, I Do.
His dark complexion and sharp facial features led to his being cast regularly as a Native American. In the 1960s he played Chief Bromden in the Broadway production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, opposite Kirk Douglas. and Gene Wilder.
Talent scouts at 20th Century Fox saw Ames on Broadway and invited him to play the Cherokee tribesman, Mingo on the NBC television series Daniel Boone, with Fess Parker. His character's father was an English officer, the Fourth Earl of Dunmore, played in the show by Walter Pidgeon. In that show, Mingo was the Earl's eldest son and thus entitled to claim the title as the fifth Earl, but decided to remain part of the Cherokee Nation.
The part of Mingo is what landed him an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
On the late-night show, Ames was given a tomahawk and asked to throw it at a wood panel with the outline of a cowboy on it. Ames chucked it straight into the cowboy’s crotch, leading to what’s been called the longest sustained audience laugh in Tonight Show history.
Ames was a lovely man. I interviewed him several times as well as reviewing his shows. I was one of the press members who traveled with him when he did what was called the Silver Circuit - performing in Las Vegas, Reno and Tahoe.
Ed Ames married Sarita (Sara) Cacheiro on July 17, 1947 and they had three children, Sonya, Ronald, and Linda (aka Marcila, who died in 2007). The couple divorced in 1978.
