The famed Oak Ridge Boys, who have sold over 40 million records, celebrated their first tour driver Darrel “Curly” Jones
for his 50 years of steering it down the road by bringing their long time friend on stage to recognize
his importance in the industry, and to honor him with a personal autographed photo of their first tour bus named “Chocolate” and a guitar signed by everyone.
Jones began his journey for the Oak Ridge Boys on July 21, 1969, with a three day run which began on
a Friday from Nashville, TN to Salem, IN continuing on to Jackson, MS for a Saturday night performance with a final
show Sunday in Greenville, SC. He was piloting the Oaks' Silver Eagle named “Chocolate” with a speedometer that had a
graph and paper, there was no digital display or electronics and no restroom on the bus.
An entrepreneur at heart, when times were lean, he convinced the Oak Ridge Boys to lease out their
bus for additional income, and the first artist to lease from them was Olivia Newton John.
From the book On the Road with The Oak Ridge Boys by Joe Bonsall who is the tenor of the group. “Well, Curly found out that Olivia Newton John was about to go on tour and might need a bus. We didn’t have many dates during this time period, so Curly leased our bus to Olivia. But there was a catch. We did not have a bathroom. We did have a funnel in the back, near The Hell Hole, where the boys could honor nature. It took talent to use the funnel on a moving bus. Sometimes one might miss and pee into the Hell Hole, but that’s another story. So Curly had a bathroom built for Olivia, and she leased our bus for several months. For the dates we had to play we either borrowed Roy Clark’s bus, promoter Sonny Simmons’ RV, or we rented something ourselves. When Chocolate returned to us we had a full-fledged bathroom. We, of course, named it the Olivia Newton JOHN!"
Jones would leave the Oaks and go into the bus business. His company was among the first of the premiere bus leasing operations in Nashville.
His 50 year career came full circle on Friday June 19 as he pulled into Mattoon, IL behind the wheel of The Oak Ridge Boys new luxury tour bus.
“Curly is simply a trailblazing show bus driving legend and we are honored that he started his legendary career driving The Oak Ridge Boys. He is a brother and a friend and after 50 years of leasing and driving buses to multitudes of big-time entertainers how cool it was that he wanted to drive us just one more time,” stated the Oak Ridge Boys. “It was surreal to have Curly in the seat again although as William Lee stated he has lost his curls. We love Curly Jones… He is part of our history!”
Jones is proud of the fact he has driven approximately five million miles and never missed a show and never had a traffic accident. The 5’ 4-1/2” tall driver is also appreciative that Trailway and Greyhound have a height requirement and would not consider hiring him due to his short height.
Jones has driven celebrities, sports figures and music artists from all genres including Melissa Manchester, Chaka Khan, Lee Ann Womack, Melissa Etheridge, Huey Lewis, Little River Band, Heart, Brooks and Dunn, Keith Urban, George Strait, Garth Brooks, Oak Ridge Boys, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett, Merle Haggard, Ashley Monroe and many more.
For Jones it's been quite a ride.
As for the Oaks, in the middle of July they were back in the studio working on their upcoming Christmas album.
They are also currently on tour. They'll be sing their his Friday, August 2 at the Spencer Theater For The Performing Arts in
Alto, NM. Saturday finds them at the The Hudson Gardens & Event Center in Littleton, CO.

ART AND ABOUT
QUEEN VICTORIA'S PALACE Commissioned by Queen Victoria, designer Eugene-Louis Lami made this incredible gown for Victoria to
wear to her costumed Stuart Ball of 1851, Photo: Royal Palaces
|
celebrates the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria's birth with a special exhibition about how she transformed
Buckingham Palace into the iconic building it is today.
Queen Victoria's Palace explores how the Palace became a power symbol of the British monarchy
as well as a family home for their nine children.
Victoria moved into Buckingham Palace almost immediately after she became queen. She set about transforming
Buckingham Palace to meet the needs of her growing family.
The most visible change introduced by Queen Victoria was the East Front of the palace. A large new ballroom designed
by James Pennethorne allowed the palace to host large numbers.
Victoria hosted her first musical evening at Buckingham Palace on July 15, 1837, a mere two days after her
arrival. From then on, she frequently held concerts and recitals at the palace. During the 1840s and 50s,
the palace also played host to a series of costume Balls, each themed around a different historical period.
These were not only public entertainments, but were designed to provide much needed employment for British
silk and textile workers.
The elaborate dress (see above) worn at the Stuart Ball of 1851 was designed by Eugene-Louis Lami (1800-90) to reflect costumes worn at the court
of Charles II, almost 200 years earlier. The bodice is decorated with seed pearls, while the lace around the shoulders
has been meticulously copied from seventeenth-century Venetian raised point needle lace,
and was probably made in Ireland and perhaps acquired at the Great Exhibition.
Fashions during the reign of Charles II saw a rise in decoration and extravagant styles with lots of ribbons and billowing materials, and constricting bodices for women’s dress
During the reign of Charles II he announced a new fashion of a vest (a long, narrow coat) to replace the doublet, an outercoat and breeches. That was the start of the three-piece suit for men. At the same time women had often worn loose gowns when relaxing at home. The early mantua, a loose garment with center opening, could be pinned and draped, started to make appearances as a day dress for outside the house.
It is this time frame that Queen Victoria II was imitating during her Stuart Ball.
Queen Victoria's Palace is on display through September 29, 2019 at Buckingham Palace in London.

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN TO SPEAK AT CANNABIS SCIENCE
CONFERENCE
Olivia Newton-John with husband John Easterling.
|
Battling breast cancer for the third time, adored singer and actress Olivia Newton-John is set to speak at the fourth annual Cannabis Science Conference September 4-6 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon to discuss how cannabis has helped her cope with pain and help her heal.
Newton-John, 70, will share her experience using cannabis for medicinal purposes in a joint address with husband John Easterling founder and president of the Amazon Herb Company titled, "Plant Medicine - A Personal Healing Journey." Combined with a healthy diet and radiation treatment, Newton-John cites her homemade cannabis oil as an important pillar in her ongoing treatment. Using four to five drops daily, she said it's helped her sleep and alleviate pain associated with the cancer.
According to breastcancer.org, anecdotal evidence suggests that cannabis may ease: pain, vomiting, hot flashes, loss of appetite, anxiety and insomnia caused by a diagnosis and treatment.
Newton-John is a four-time Grammy award winner who has amassed five number-one and ten other top ten Billboard Hot 100 singles,] and two number-one Billboard 200 solo albums. In 1992 Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer, the same weekend her father died. In 2008, she raised funds to help build the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia. She led a three-week, 228 km. walk along the Great Wall of China during April joined by various celebrities and cancer survivors throughout her trek. The walk symbolized the steps cancer patients must take on their road to recovery. In May 2017, it was announced that Newton-John's breast cancer had returned and metastasized to her lower back.
Cannabis Science Conference is the world's largest and most technical cannabis science expo. The conference pulls together cannabis industry experts, instrument manufacturers, testing labs, research scientists, medical practitioners, policy makers and interested novices. The conference will feature keynotes, presentations, round table discussions and exhibits.

The Neville Brothers, formed in 1977, consisted of Arthur, Charles, Aaron and Cyril Neville. The group, working a mélange of musical styles and influences, released a string of albums including “Fiyo on the Bayou” (1981) and “Yellow Moon” (1989).
