BROADWAY VETERANS BOLSTER TELEVISION SERIES
Broadway star power is beefing up television prime time.
For decades Broadway stars have been tapped for reoccurring parts to casual walk-ons in an effort to broaden the fan base.
The hit Only Murders in the Building has been rift with stage stars since day one. Starring Tony winner Martin Short, and actor, playwright and banjo player and two time Tony nominee Steve Martin with Tony winner Nathan Lane making guest appearances, as he does in numerous television series.
Lane boasts three Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, three Emmy Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Lane received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. Productions welcome him with open arms.
Being able to list a live stage production on your resume tells a casting director a lot. On stage there is no 'take two.' You have to know your part, deliver it correctly, be on time and professional.
Falling into that category: Jackie Hoffman, who has appeared in 18 episodes of Only Murders in the Building, won the Joseph Jefferson Award, Chicago's venerable theatre award, during her eight-year tenure with the Second City troupe.
She performed numerous roles in David and Amy Sedaris's 2001 comic play, The Book of Liz, winning an Obie Award. Her other theatrical credits include The Sisters Rosensweig, Straightjacket, Incident at Cobbler's Knob, and One Woman Shoe, for which she won a Jeff Award. In addition, she regularly performs at Joe's Pub in one-woman concerts.
Amy Ryan has ticked off 15 episodes. She began her professional stage career in 1987 and made her Broadway debut in 1993 as a replacement in the original production of Wendy Wasserstein's The Sisters Rosensweig. She was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performances in Uncle Vanya and A Streetcar Named Desire, and the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Doubt: A Parable.
Paul Rudd has logged 14 episodes of Murders followed by Jane Houdyshell with 13 episodes. She made her Broadway debut in the musical A Wonderful Life. She went on to receive the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for The Humans (2016). She was Tony-nominated for her roles in the Lisa Kron play Well, the revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical Follies, the new play by Lucas Hnath A Doll's House, Part 2, and the revival of Meredith Willson's The Music Man.
Meryl Streep, a Murders nine time episoder, made her stage debut in 1975 in Trelawny of the Wells, and the following year she received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for a double-bill production of 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and A Memory of Two Mondays.
Also with nine episodes under her star is Jane Lynch who starred in Nora Ephron's off-Broadway play Love, Loss, and What I Wore in 2009. She made her Broadway debut as Miss Hannigan in the revival of Annie in 2013. She returned to Broadway as Mrs. Brice in another revival, Funny Girl, in 2022.
Murders lists a cast of 228. In addition to the above mentioned, those jumping out with theatrical credentials include: Tony Award nominee Da'Vine Joy Randolph (12 episodes), Tiny Fey (9 episodes), Tony Award winner Jeremy Shamos (8 episodes),
Richard Kind (7 episodes), deaf actor James Caverly who began his career with the National Theatre Company (7 episodes), Obie Award winner Russell G. Jones (7 episodes), Eugene Levy (6 episodes), Tony winner Ali Stroker (4 episodes), Tony winner Matthew Broderick (2 episodes), Shirley MacLaine (2 episodes), Amy Schumer (2 episodes), Sting (2 episode), Drama Desk Award winner Marylouise Burke (1 episode), Tony nominee Scott Bakula (1 episode), Tony winner Mel Brooks (1 episode), among others.
There are also some delightful, relatively new series such as Matlock and Elsbeth both airing on CBS. While Matlock has been renewed, Elsbeth hangs in limbo - neither cancelled or renewed.
The spine of Matlock is the overwhelmingly talented, Tony nominated Kathy Bates who was known as "Bobo Bates" in 1973 when she performed in Wayside Theatre's traveling group, Wayside Theatre on Tour. Her first Off-Broadway performance was in the 1976 production of Vanities.
Elsbeth is so delightfully quirky that it is effervescently enchanting. Starring Emmy-winner and Broadway alum Carrie Preston. Co-starring are Broadway performers Wendell Pierce and Carra Patterson. The Great White Way involvement is overflowing with Broadway big timers.
In season one the guest stars included: Tony winner Jane Krakowski, Greg Hildreth, Tony winner Linda Lavin, Tony winner Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Tony winner Laura Benanti and Tony winner André De Shields
Paloma Garcia-Lee, Blair Underwood, Gina Gershon and Tony nominee Micaela Diamond, Keegan-Michael Key and Arian Moayed.
Season Two found Nathan Lane on camera as well as Vanessa William, who is currently starring in the West End production of The Devil Wears Prada. Laurie Metcalf and Eric McCormack were on board. So were Rob Riggle, Melanie Chandra, and Victor Williams Carra Patterson, Kaya Blanke Jenn Lyon, Christian Borle, Carter Schmidt.
The Connors which is bidding adieu, has been Broadway strong from the start. John Goodman started his career at The Public Theatre acting numerous productions including Henry IV, Part 1; The Skin of Our Teeth. and The Seagull. He made his Broadway debut in he 1985 production of Big River, for which Goodman received a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical nomination. He returned to Broadway in revivals of the Samuel Becket play Waiting for Godot, and the newspaper comedy The Front Page . Goodman made his West End debut in a revival of David Mamet's American Buffalo.
Laurie Metcalf has a prolific career spanning four decades. She began her career with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company and frequently works in Chicago theatre. She made her Broadway debut in the 1985 play My Thing of Love. She went on to receive six Tony Award nominations, winning Best Actress in a Play in 2017 for her performance in A Doll's House, Part 2 and Best Featured Actress in a Play for the 2018 revival of Edward Albee's Three Tall Women. Her other Tony-nominated roles were for November (2008), The Other Place (2010), Misery (2016), and Hillary and Clinton (2019).
A series which took American television by storm, Quinta Brunson's Abbott Elementary, has its share of Broadway veterans in star roles, guest star gigs, such as Leslie Odom, Jr., or in cameos.
Chris Perfetti stars as teacher Jacob Hill. Perfetti is a graduate of State University of New York, Purchase (BFA) stared in Sons of the Prophet by playwright Stephen Karam, playing the role of Charlie. For his work as Charlie, he received a Theatre World Award for Best Debut Performance in an Off-Broadway play. His numerous stage credits include playing Bomber in the 2012 revival of Picnic by William Inge. Perfetti appeared as Ariel in The Tempest at the Delacorte Theater in the summer of 2015.
Like many stage performers he also did a stint in Blue Bloods and in 2021 accepted the role of Jacob Hill in Abbott Elementary.
Sheryl Lee Ralph has earned an Emmy for portraying veteran elementary school teacher Barbara Howard. On Broadway she became the first black actress cast as Madame Morrible in Wicked. She also was a knockout in Dreamgirls.
Ralph played Deena Jones, a singer who's part of a trio of Black women called the Dreams. For her role Ralph received a Tony award nomination. The musical was loosely based on the rise of the '60s girl groups like the Supremes and the Shirelles.
Happy's Place on NBC stars Reba McEntire, who is thankfully all over everything - From Broadway, to her own singing, to judging the singing of others to showing off on a horse. A Kennedy Center Honors recipient, she also serves as an executive producer on Happy's Place. The network has ordered additional episodes of the sitcom for the first season. Happy's Place revolves around Bobbie (Reba) after she inherits her father's bar and learns she is to run it with the half-sister she never knew she had.
Reba made her Broadway debut as Annie in Annie Get Your Gun earning rave reviews. She also serves as a production for the Broadway show Shucked.
Law & Order and its multiple spin-offs has spent over two decades giving over a thousand Broadway actors an additional source of income.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, has enjoyed an embarrassment of riches from Cynthia Nixon to John Stamos, Carol Burnett to Martin Short, and Bradley Cooper to Aaron Tveit. Then there's Alfred Molina, Sutton Foster, Marlee Matlin, Bebe Neuwirth, Lou Diamond Phillips, Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, Audra McDonald Lea Thompson, Andy Karl and Henry Winkler.
Blair Underwood appeared on stage in 2012 in the lead role of Stanley in the Broadway revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. In January 2020 he returned to Broadway as Captain Richard Davenport in the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of Charles Fuller's Pulize Prize-winning drama A Soldier's Play. Raúl Esparza received a Tony-nomination for his portrayal of Bobby in the John Doyle revival of Stephen Sondheim's Company. Another performance was as Fagin in the Encores! revival of Oliver! On SVU, Esparza was cast as Rafael Barba, assistant district attorney.
Two-time Tony nominee Alex Brightman, Drama Desk winner and Tony nominated Ethan Slater, Tony winner Roger Bart, Tony winner Billy Porter, and Tony winner Daveed Diggs have all been cast in SVU.
Other SVU veterans include Tony Award nominee Sam Waterston. The classically trained Waterston made his Broadway debut in 1962 playing Jonathan in the Arthur Kopit play Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad at the Morosco Theatre. The following year, he made his debut at the Delacorte Theatre playing Silvius in a production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It. During summers he was often seen acting in such venues as Long Wharf Theatre and the Yale Repertory Theatre.
In 1993, he portrayed Abraham Lincoln onstage in Abe Lincoln in Illinois and received Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations for his performance.
This fall ABC's Doctor Odyssey sailed into television screens, creating buzz about how a cruise ship's medical staff was inaccurately portraying medicine. Currently the series is treading water, not yet informed if they have been picked up or cancelled. Doctor Odyssey can boast its main actors have theatrical track records as wide as the ocean. Joshua Jackson who plays the series doctor heart-throb moved to the UK to make his stage debut on the London West End with Patrick Stewart in David Mamet's two-man play, A Life in the Theatre. The mounting was a success and Jackson indicated he wanted to play Broadway.
A cast member who repeatedly plays Broadway is Phillipa Anne Soo who stars as a nurse in the medical drama. Prior to Doctor Odyssey she was known for her leading roles on Broadway primarily in musical. She has received two Grammy Awards along with nominations for a Tony Award and a Primetime Emmy Award.
Soo originated the role of Eliza Hamilton in the musical Hamilton. Soo's other Broadway credits include the title role in Amélie (2017), Rebecca in The Parisian Woman (2017–18), Cinderella in Into the Woods (2022), and Guenevere in Camelot (2023). She also originated the role of Natasha Rostova in the off-Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (2012) as well as the role of suffragist Inez Milholland in Suffs (2022).
Rounding out the Doctor Odyssey leads is Don Johnson as the ship's captain. Johnson's first major role was in the 1969 Los Angeles stage production of Fortune and Men's Eyes, in which he played the lead role of Smitty. The play included a "shockingly realistic prison rape" scene portrayed by Johnson.
In January 2007, Johnson began a run in the West End of London production of Guys and Dolls as Nathan Detroit.
A regular in Doctor Odyssey is Emmy winner Margo Martindale who is the daughter of the late, iconic game show host Wink Martindale. In the early 1980s Martindale worked for four years at the Actors Theatre, Louisville, Kentucky, where she became good friends with fellow actress Kathy Bates. Martindale starred in several off-Broadway stage productions, most notably originating the role of Truvy Jones in the first production of Steel Magnolias, and starring in its first national tour. Martindale made her Broadway debut in 2004 as Big Mama in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, for which she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
Before Doctor Odyssey Cheyenne Jackson was constantly on stage. He began his acting career in regional theatre in Seattle, Washington. After moving to The Big Apple he was an understudy in the Broadway productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002) and Aida (2003). He next originated the role of Matthew in the workshop production of Altar Boyz (2004) for the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Jackson's first leading role on Broadway was in All Shook Up (2005), which earned him a Theatre World Award for "Outstanding Broadway Debut". Since then, on the New York stage, he has starred in The Agony & the Agony (2006), Xanadu earning Drama League and Drama Desk nominations. Damn Yankees followed then Finian's Rainbow earning another Drama Desk nomination. 8 was next followed by The Heart of the Matter: The Performers: The Secret Garden: Into the Woods and Once Upon a Mattress.
Broadway's importance to the small screen, the boob tube, the Telly, or whatever you chose to call that device that keeps us informed and entertained is evident in almost every series.

WOMEN & FREUD: PATIENTS, PIONEERS, ARTISTS a dazzling new exhibition that highlights the women who helped Freud invent psychoanalysis and their legacy in its practice - as well as in the arts and literature through to our own time.
From the early "hysterics", who Freud called "his teachers", to later patients, many of whom like Princess Marie Bonaparte became analysts, to his daughter Anna Freud and her partner Dorothy Burlingham, to artists such as Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, Louise Bourgeois, Paula Rego, Alice Anderson and Tracey Emin, the exhibition draws on manuscripts, images, objects, visuals, and film footage to bring to life the many women who featured in Freud’s history, as well as those affected by his considerable body of thinking, rethinking and practice .
2024 also marks the 100th anniversary of the first publication of Sigmund’s Freud’s work by the legendary Hogarth Press, founded and owned by Virginia and Leonard Woolf and a key feature in Bloomsbury life.
The exhibition celebrates the establishment of the Press alongside Bloomsbury Freud. Virginia and Leonard Woolf met Freud in his last year in London. Several of Freud’s British women analysands (and later analysts) worked on the translation that eventually became the Standard Edition of the Complete Works of Sigmund Freud – among them the remarkable Joan Riviere and Alix Strachey, who also labored as a typesetter (and "secretaire") at the Hogarth Press.
Women & Freud: Patients, Pioneers, Artists will stretch through the Museum’s many rooms, beginning with interventions on the ground floor, featuring Freud’s family, his female goddesses and Gradiva – the inspiration of the "cure through love".
Drawing on Appignanesi and Forrester’s book, Freud’s Women, the exhibition sets up a dialectic between Freud’s understanding of women and their understanding of themselves which can work both as resistance to and development of psychoanalytic thinking – and also sometimes as its rejection.
Did the talking cure give women the power to speak in their own voice? Did Freud raise women’s private, secret thoughts and emotions into a public (and "scientific") discourse so that they could consider their own sexuality openly even if in argument with him? Where does sexual difference elide into gendered expectations or prohibitions?
These are some of the questions the exhibition raises through its women, not least Anna Freud. Her room in the Museum will feature new materials as well as the hand-made objects she loved (and the making of which she found therapeutic), together with a new installation by ceramicist Abigail Schama.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of high-profile events bringing some of the best-known contemporary authors to Maresfield Gardens to talk about their work with analysts and thinkers in the very house where Sigmund Freud had tea with Virginia Woolf while discussing his last major work.
Women & Freud: Patients, Pioneers, Artists is curated by Lisa Appignanesi and Bryony Davies. On exhibit to May 5, 2025.

ON THE MEND
BRIAN MAY whose wife Anita Dobson announced that her husband, the Queen's guitarist, has learned to play guitar again.
Sir Doctor Brian May, 77, who holds a Doctor of Science in astrophysics and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth, suffered a "minor stroke" in September, resulting inn an inability to use his left arm. Thanksfully, the good news is he won't have to fall back on his Doctorate to earn a living.
"He's much better now, he's stabilized now, which is brilliant," Anita said at the Television Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Christmas Lunch, where she was honored with an award.
TRIC is a professional charity organization in which "charities are carefully selected by our President and Committee to reflect the interests of all the broadcasting industries TRIC represents." At the lunch TRIC guests dined with the brightest stars from TV, radio and online, and watch live performances from the UK’s leading comedians and round off the day with Christmas carols from West End superstars.
With happy news to report to attendees and the press Dobson admitted, "I just hope we don't have any more reoccurrence."
She added of Brian's return to playing: "He's got the use of that arm, which was a bit of a challenge, back now.
"He's good to go now. He’s playing the piano quite a lot in the house. He likes a lot of Beethoven. I love it – the piano in the house is really, just very relaxing.
“He didn’t actually try until after he’d recovered quite a bit. And then he very slowly started to pick up an acoustic guitar and gradually just exercise the muscles. And it very quickly came back"
Anita continued: "He's just retraining the messages from your brain to that arm, that it’s actually okay to do what it used to do. It was scary.
"And also being a genius for someone like that. His brain’s overloaded, that’s what it is. He's too clever for his own good."
Following his stroke, which MMay had described as "about 40 minutes of pain in the chest and tightness and that feeling in the arms and sweating." the musician was taken
to Frimley Hospital in an ambulance with "blue lights flashing... the lot". Later May reported that he had received "fantastic" care.

The feative event carried the theme of "Love and Empathy." Those in attendance each received a tender letter from the mother of three. The front page featured a special illustration by artist Charlie Mackesy showing people walking towards Westminster Abbey with their arms around each other. The caption reads: "How did I help? FAWLTY TOWERS Adapted for the stage by John Cleese, who co-created the original TV show with Connie Booth.
Directed by Caroline Jay Ranger.
Manuel, take the guests' bags and show them to their room! This summer, check into Fawlty Towers, the world’s most chaotic hotel, in the West End.
In this new comic play, the characters we know and love are all present and correct and nothing at the genteel Torquay hotel is running smoothly – it’s more of a madhouse than a spot for a weekend by the sea. Basil is in a bother of his own making, Sybil is gossiping, Manuel is struggling with his English, and Polly is trying to hold everything together.
The stage show is based on three of the best-loved episodes: “The Hotel Inspectors”, “Communication Problems”, and “The Germans”. Basil is paranoid that there’s an inspector in his midst, the bad-tempered “guest from hell”, Mrs Richards, in on his case while he tries to hide his gambling from Sybil, and he’s outrageously insensitive towards a group of German visitors while suffering the effects of a concussion. Enjoy three hilariously farcical storylines in one evening!
Adam Jackson-Smith steps into Cleese’s shoes as the permanently harassed Basil who openly despises most of his guests. Anna-Jane Casey plays his formidable wife and co-manager Sybil. Hemi Yeroham stars as the endearingly hapless Spanish waiter Manuel, and newcomer Victoria Fox plays Polly, the long-suffering voice of reason.
Performances to March 1, 2025 at the Apollo Theatre, London.

DRUNK SHAKESPEARE by The Drunk Shakespeare Society.
Directed by David Hudson.
Featuring: Nate Betancourt, Danielle Cohn, Tim Haber, Josh Hyman, David Andrew Laws, Whit Leyenberger, Preston Mulligan, Mariah Parris, Mike Sause, Aubrey Taylor, Khiry Walker.
Raise a glass to this unique Shakespeare series where booze upends the Bard.
At every performance of, five actors within the The Drunk Shakespeare Society put on one of the famous playwright's works; it changes each night. But this isn't like the Shakespeare you'll see at Shakespeare in the Park or at the Globe. Pre-show, one of the actors takes five shots of whiskey (joined for the first one by an audience member, to prove the liquor's real) and must proceed to play their part. It's up to the other four actors to keep the show going while also following whatever unexpected choices the fifth actor drunkenly makes.
Drunk Shakespeare has been in New York since 2014; at first, the Society only put on Macbeth, but more shows have been added to the rotation. The show has changed venues multiple times since its premiere; all have been intimate, often hidden, performance spaces and converted bars.
Certain things about the show have remained the same from venue to venue. Each venue is decorated to look like an old library. Improv, contemporary references, and audience interaction all become part of each show, making even Shakespeare's tragedies into comedies. And most importantly of all, the audience is able to purchase cocktails for themselves and join in the liquor-fueled fun.
Though Shakespeare plays vary in length, all are performed within 90 minutes at Drunk Shakespeare. There is no intermission. Ticketholders for Drunk Shakespeare must be 21+.
Performances at the Ruby Theatre Off-Broadway in New York City.
