ROYALTY AWARD TIME

Across the pond it's referred to as the New Years Honors. A time for the ordinary and the famous to pick up a title or at least a ribbon and a badge thanking them for their hard work in areas ranging from the arts to sports and charity work, for outstanding service and achievement.

The honors, which are decided by an independent committe before being put in front of the prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, and the King, include Knighthoods, Damehoods, as well as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Who else made the 2025 New Year Honours list?

Idris Elba - the Luther star will soon be known as Sir Idris as he has received a knighthood. The actor, 53, is being knighted for services to young people, having founded the Elba Hope Foundation, which supports community empowerment, education, youth advocacy, and sustainable development.

Actor Warwick Davis, who has appeared in Star Wars and Harry Potter, has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). The star, 55, received the honor for his services to drama and charity.

Dancing On Ice's Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean 'will be given damehood and knighthood in the King's New Year Honours' after five decades of skating.

Former Pointless presenter Richard Osman is being made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to literature and broadcasting after the sell-out success of his The Thursday Murder Club series. Earlier this year, the first book, which was published in 2020, was turned into a hugely popular Netflix film starring Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.

Prince William and Princess Kate's nanny to be honored with a special award. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis' long-time nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, has been awarded a Royal Victorian Medal (Silver) for her services to the couple.

In 2018, she was seen wearing the distinctive brown and white Norland uniform while tending to Prince George and Princess Charlotte during Pippa Middleton's 2017 wedding.

Most recently, she was seen in the back of Prince William's car as Charlotte rode in the front, heading back from a Christmas Lunch for members of the royal family, hosted by King Charles at Buckingham Palace on December 16, 2025.

The list, also recognized King Charles' medical team, including Professor Philip Anthony Bloom, who is the King's eye surgeon, Professor Charles Deakin, a travelling physician to Charles and Camilla, and plastic surgeon Simon Eccles become Lieutenants of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) for their service to the monarch.

ART AND ABOUT

ALFREDO CASTANEDA: BEYOND SURREALISM through March 1, 2026 at the San Diego Museum of Art in San Diego, CA.

Alfredo Castañeda: Beyond Surrealism brings together thirty-five paintings from outstanding private collections in North America and Spain for the first museum retrospective of the artist’s work in the United States. The exhibition covers five decades of the artist’s wide-ranging international career and his unique exploration of Surrealist themes through deeply personal iconography and distinctive visual narrative.

Alfredo Castañeda (Mexico City, 1938-2010, Madrid) was one of the most prolific and impactful champions of the Surrealist movement in Latin America and in the later twentieth century. While training as an architect at the National University of Mexico, he studied with Mattias Goeritz, whose work inspired him to expand his art practice to include painting. Castañeda had practiced drawing since childhood, but he was further encouraged by an encounter with René Magritte’s work. Marked by introspection, psychological investigation, whimsy, and an acutely self-aware sense of humor, Castañeda’s paintings have a magical realist quality and high degree of visual finish. Many scenes feature trompe l’oeil effects that call into question the artist’s trustworthiness as a narrator, as the realism the viewer sees is often at odds with the absurdities of what the artist chooses to represent. Themes of family, self, identity, and journey are all at the forefront of this striking artist’s visual vocabulary.

SPREADING THE WORD

HANDEL'S TAMERLANO a visionary new production by acclaimed director Stefano Poda, known for his striking, symbolic, and immersive staging. This bold reimagining blends Handel’s timeless score with a new musical concept by composer Kirill Richter, weaving in the textures of traditional Uzbek instruments to evoke the legacy of Amir Temur.

More than 160 artists from international soloists, ballet performers, the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan, the State Choir, and national ensembles come together to create a vivid world of music, movement, and visual poetry.

Presened by The Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation January 10 - 11 2026 at Dubai Opera in Dubai UAE.

WORKS & PROCESS PRESENTS OPERA PHILDELPHIA for a preview performance of Complications in Sue by Michael R. Jackson, set for Friday, January 16, 2026 at the Peter B. Lewis Theater, New York.

Before its world premiere at Opera Philadelphia in February, this preview of Complications in Sue shows how one librettist, one actor, four singers, and ten composers joined forces to make opera in a brand-new way. In his first opera libretto, Pulitzer Prize– and Tony Award–winning playwright Michael R. Jackson traces the life of a woman named Sue over ten decades. Sue’s life—from the mundane to the extraordinary—unfolds, with each chapter scored by a different musical luminary.

Opera Philadelphia favorites Missy Mazzoli, Rene Orth, and Nico Muhly return alongside a panoply of company debuts from notable composers, like Grammy Awards–nominee Nathalie Joachim. The production stars MacArthur Fellow and cabaret icon Justin Vivian Bond, with Zack Winokur and Raja Feather Kelly directing, and conductor Caren Levine making her Opera Philadelphia debut. Jackson, Costanzo, Winokur, and Kelly join in a moderated discussion blended with performance highlights.

FOUNTAIN THEATRE'S REVOLUTIONS & REVELATIONS season celebrates 35 years of impact and legacy.

Launching the season at the end of January will be the West Coast premiere of Poetry for the People: The June Jordan Experience (previously announced for Fall 2025). What does resistance sound like?

Poetry for the People is the bold, joyous, Helen Hayes Award-winning celebration, devised by Caldwell and Jordan’s longtime collaborator and life partner, composer Adrienne Torf, of one of America’s most fearless writers and human rights activists. Six dynamic performers weave together Jordan’s electric poetry with movement, live music, and selections by another Jordan collaborator, John Adams, and iconic a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, who set Jordan’s poems to song. In keeping with the Fountain vision to move productions into the community, Poetry for the People will also travel to Berkeley in partnership with UC Berkeley and The Freight. (January 31 – March 29; previews January 27– January 29).

Superstition and science intertwine in the world premiere of RETURN (Teshuvah), a dark comedy by Beth Kander set for spring. In this funny and provocative modern-day dybbuk tale about memory, grief and guilt, Miriam is a geneticist on the verge of a scientific breakthrough that could alter humanity and transform our understanding of death. (May 2 – June 21; previews April 29 and April 30)

Following Return, a summer-long Fugard Festival will celebrate Athol Fugard, the internationally acclaimed South African playwright whose work challenging that country’s system of apartheid made him a symbol of artistic resistance, and who declared the Fountain Theatre, where many of his plays premiered, his “artistic home on the West Coast.” Anchored by a mainstage production of Sizwe Bansi Is Dead directed by Simon Levy, the Festival will move into the community, partnering with other theater companies, high schools and colleges to present readings of Fugard’s work including The Island, Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act, The Road to Mecca, and Exits and Entrances. (July 18 – Sept. 6; previews July 15 and July 16).

In the fall, Caldwell will direct the West Coast premiere of a groundbreaking, funny, smart and moving satire by an acclaimed, Tony nominated contemporary playwright — the title of which can’t be revealed just yet, but which will be announced shortly. Stand by! (Oct. 24 – Dec. 13; previews Oct. 21 and Oct. 22).

Satellite events set for 2026 include monthly performances of The Fountain’s longtime Forever Flamenco series, created by co-founder Deborah Culver Lawlor, which will expand in the new year to feature additional evenings of World Dance; a Staged Reading Series curated by Fountain producing director Simon Levy; and a new monthly Cabaret Series offering intimate evenings with Los Angeles-based singers and musicians. The year will also be devoted to developing Embers Borne West by Maddox K. Pennington, who along with the Fountain is the recipient of a prestigious Los Angeles New Play Project (LANPP) grant, for a full Fountain production in 2027.

ODYSSEY THEATRE ENSEMBLE'S annual six-week celebration of contemporary dance expands in its ninth year, doubling the number of offerings and spilling over into a second space at the Odyssey’s three-theater complex in West L.A. Performances in 2026 will take place concurrently in two theaters, Odyssey 2 and Odyssey 3, from January 8 through February 15.

Curated by series co-founder Barbara Muller-Wittmann, the Odyssey’s unique festival has established itself as the go-to place to view new work by cutting edge companies and choreographers. This year’s event will spotlight the work of over 17 Los Angeles-based choreographers and feature three evenings of award-winning dance films from around the world.

Odyssey Theatre Ensemble was founded in 1969 by Ron Sossi, who remained at the company’s helm for 56 years until his death at the age of 85. The company remains one of Los Angeles’ most vibrant and adventurous under the current leadership of artistic director Beth Hogan, who co-founded the Dance at the Odyssey series with Muller-Wittmann in 2017.

AMERICAN DESIGNER BRAND RALPH LAUREN has unveiled Team USA’s opening and closing ceremony uniforms for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, which kicks off on February 6.

ZINEB SEDIRA (b.1963, France) will be the next artist to undertake the Tate Britain Commission. Unveiled for the first time on May 13, 2026, Sedira’s major new work will be the latest response to the unique context of the neo-classical Duveen Galleries at the heart of Tate Britain. On view until January 17,2027, this will be the artist’s largest commission in the UK to date.

Over the past three decades, Zineb Sedira has developed a powerful and multifaceted artistic practice spanning photography, performance, video, and installation. Sedira's work draws on personal encounters within the Algerian diaspora of Africa. Taking inspiration from family archives and the history of cinema, she bridges the political and the poetic, thoughtfully exploring themes of memory, migration and trauma. Her installations invite audiences to consider the emotional and geographical dimensions of displacement, while critically examining dominant historical narratives. By keeping histories alive, her storytelling becomes both an act of resistance and a gesture of connection, affirming her place as a significant and influential voice in today’s cultural landscape.

Zineb Sedira said: "Taking on the Tate Britain Commission feels both monumental and intimate. It’s about bringing the weight of history into dialogue with the living pulse of the Pan-African experience. It gives me the opportunity to imagine new stories, new energies, and new meanings.”

Tate Britain Commission: Zineb Sedira is curated by Jessica Vaughan, Curator, Contemporary British Art, with Celeste McEvoy, Assistant Curator Contemporary British Art.

Alex Farquharson, Director, Tate Britain, said: "We are delighted that Zineb Sedira is undertaking next year’s Tate Britain Commission. Sedira is a vital force in contemporary art, celebrated for her immersive, multi-sensory installations that offer a nuanced reflection on history, memory, identity and belonging. We’re excited to see how she will transform the Duveen Galleries with her unique vision“

Zineb Sedira was born in Paris in 1963 to Algerian parents. She moved to London in the 1980, completing her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Central St Martin's School of Art and the Slade School of Art, followed by a research fellowship at the Royal College of Art. Working between the mediums of photography, film, installation and performance, Sedira is best known for her explorations of the human dimension of geopolitical change. She represented France at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022 with Dreams Have No Titles, a critically acclaimed installation inspired by militant cinema and her family's immigrant journey. Her work is held in major public collections including Tate, Centre Pompidou, Sharjah Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and she has exhibited widely across Europe, North Africa, and North America.

Tate Britain Commission: Zineb Sedira is the latest in a series of contemporary commissions for artists to develop a new site-specific work in Tate Britain’s Duveen Galleries. Artists who have previously undertaken commissions in the Duveens include Alvaro Barrington (2024), Hew Locke (2022), Heather Phillipson (2021), Mike Nelson (2019), Anthea Hamilton (2018), Cerith Wyn Evans (2017), Pablo Bronstein (2016), Christina Mackie (2015), and Phyllida Barlow (2014).
