MAYBE HAPPY ENDING - A DELIGHTFUL, ROMANTIC ROBOT MUSICAL

It will make your heart cry.
One of the most unusual concepts to ever make it to Broadway. A romantic robot musical which will teach humans about emotions.
Being staged at the Belasco Theatre the musical from South Korea with a hint of a jazz infused score and script by Will Aronson with lyrics like Hue Park will unforgettably grab your soul.
This is a unique, beautifully executed musical which encompasses both anthropomorphism and personification to teach the importance of understanding the human condition.
Longing transcends all universes.
In this moving, tender and sensitively inventive musical there is no first act closing, standing ovation, sing it to the back row number. No high kicking dance production numbers.
A lonely HelperBot robot, Oliver, played by Darren Criss, hasn't quite caught on that he is old merchandise. He's been relegated to the Bot equivalent of an assisted care facility, minus the assistance. He performs his usual daily routine, which is methodically repetitive.
In his tiny 300-square-foot IKEA furnished living quarters, he cares for his beloved plant, HwaBoon. His window to the world is a mail shoot where he receives everything from jazz magazines to his own replacement parts. He's placid, patiently waiting for his owner, James, to come get him.
He find solace in a needle type record player which enables him to play his scratched. jazz infused records.
Days turn into months but the HelperBot's routine remains the same.
Then the audience is informed: "Twelve years later."
Oliver is still there in his pen but James remains nowhere in sight.
When a fellow over-the-hill Bot named Claire (Helen J Shen in her Broadway debut) knocks on his door begging to use his charger Bot life changes. She needs a boost. Without that plug, she stops functioning, as her ability to function was constructed from parts meant to wear out. She is HelperBod 5 while Oliver is a newer model, a 3. Oliver uses that opportunity to throw that in her manufactured face. Never-the-less Oliver attempts to be a Bot gentleman and loans Claire his charging cord. That leads to Claire showing up at his door on a regular basis. She is desperate not to be permanently attached to a wall. She needs his cord. At first he is annoyed. She is disrupting his routine.
Then the yin and yang of a budding, almost childish romance occurs. Two antiquated Bots with no history in the romance department stumble and fumble. They are adorable.
Dennis Criss and Helen J. Shen make an endearing couple, much like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
Despite a passion for fireflies, Claire is the one who has a bolt or two in reality.
Aiding in the romance department is crooner Gil Brentley (Dez Duron). He hacks into their hard drives and sings Sinatra type tunes with lyrics relating to Oliver and Claire.
If Claire wants fireflies, Oliver wants his owner back. The Bots dream up a plan. They will pretend to be human. As a teaching tool, they even watch Terminator and complain about the violence.
As Bots, this nuts and bolts coupling begins a quirky road trip. Oliver is desperate to locate James (Marcus Choi) and intends to find him. Realistic Claire is never-the-less game for anything and is his partner in pretending to be real. Set in Seoul, it seems that years ago James moved to Jeju Island, 100 miles away, and has not so much as even kept in touch by a phone call or a postal note. Oliver knows James' new island address and is determined to find him.
Destined for scrap heap the Bots aren't supposed to leave the facility but Oliver and Claire manage their escape. Their efforts to pretend to be humans at a 'Hotel Hello' type of seedy bed down result in some late-night escapades which are played to uproarious perfection.
Tony Award director Michael Arden lets it be known that he'll be in contention for another one. Dane Laffrey's set deserves to become award winning. Perfectly aligned with video designer George Reeve, lighting designer Ben Stanton, and sound designer Peter Hylenski, they creates jaw droping flash and color explosions. There are holograms as on-stage characters interact with ghostly black-and-white video characters; a stage framed in moving scrims lined in neon. Clair's desire for fireflies is granted.
Is Oliver reunited with his owner? Does Claire get her own cord? Do they find ever lasting Bot love?
You'll' just have to attend a performance.
This is a profoundly moving production that will stay with you. Oh, bring along a hanky..

ART AND ABOUT

From the 1600s until about 1830, the education of American girls emphasized reading, writing, and embroidery.
For girls whose families could afford to send them to school, a finely worked embroidery which was worthy of being framed for display in her home served as a kind of diploma. It evidenced both her mastery of an important practical skill and the diligence and self-discipline that society expected of its more privileged members.
The content and style of American schoolgirl embroideries varied across both time and place.
Painted with Silk features unusually beautiful and well-preserved examples of this inherently fragile art in order to explore the cultural values and norms that schoolgirl embroidery was used to teach.
Painted with Silk also includes contemporary embroideries by the artist Elaine Reichek.
In her work, Reichek repurposed the form of the older embroideries in order to expose and criticize the assumptions about gender, class and race that they expressed and reinforced.
Exhibition: Painted With Silk on display through June 15, 2025 at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

HOW CHRISTMAS MOVIES INFLUENCE COURT CASES
Lawyers have been citing and judges turning to Christmas movies to help them argue their cases and reach a verdict.
Attorney Randy Maniloff researched and penned an intersting piece on the subject for the American Bar Association's publication.
Examples Maniloff cited:
A landlord-tenant dispute over unpaid rent resulted in Skala v. Edlich (2002). A New York court cited as precedent People of the State of New York v. Kris Kringle, which was tried in the 1947 film Miracle on 34th Street.
One issue was whether the tenants had abandoned the premises. In concluding that they had, the judge observed that several court notices sent to the tenants had been returned by the Post Office marked "Return to sender. Moved left no address. Unable to forward."
According to Maniloff, the court decided that "if the Post Office can be used as conclusive proof to establish the existence of Santa Claus," then the information provided by the Post Office was "uncontroverted evidence that the [tenants] have abandoned the premises."
In Texas v. U.S. (2016), a judge concluded that federal prosecutors made false statements to the court concerning the implementation of immigration rules. To demonstrate that the government attorneys should have known better, the Texas federal judge turned to the same trial of Kris Kringle.
The jurist recalled the testimony of a young boy on the witness stand. When the child was asked whether he knew the difference between telling the truth and telling a lie, he replied: "Gosh, everybody knows you shouldn’t tell a lie, especially in court."
While "the need to tell the truth, especially in court, was obvious" to this youngster, the court observed that "there are certain attorneys in the Justice Department who apparently have not received that message."
Carlos Serna-Lopez was convicted by a Colorado jury of robbery using a deadly weapon. On appeal, he argued that the prosecutor lacked evidence that the BB pistol he’d employed can cause serious bodily injury.
In People v. Serna-Lopez (2023), despite a defendant’s argument to the contrary, a state appeals court, instead of needing specialized testimony, relied on a well-known admonition in 1983 film A Christmas Story, according to Maniloff's article.
The court recalled the 1983 film, where Ralphie Parker was desperate to find a BB gun—an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot range air rifle with a compass in the stock—under the tree. But he had been warned by his mother, a teacher and Santa Claus, "You’ll shoot your eye out."
Then there was Annie Davis of Indiana who filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. She sought to keep her creditors from getting $8,000 in life insurance proceeds she received following her husband’s death. The bankruptcy trustee argued that this was an inappropriate exemption, explained Maniloff.
An Indiana bankruptcy court disagreed—and saw the case involving much more than Davis’ situation; rather, it was one, the court stated, that "plays out on a much larger stage." Its rationale for allowing Davis to retain the life insurance proceeds included a scene from It’s a Wonderful Life. In the 1946 film, George Bailey, hoping to keep his savings and loan afloat, turned to the cruel Henry Potter for a loan. But all Bailey had for collateral was $500 in equity in a life insurance policy. Potter scoffed, calling it a "miserable little" asset.
The judge in re Davis (2015) saw its value differently. In ruling for the widow, he stated, "There are many, many George Baileys in Indiana. … To those George Baileys, the benefits received from a life insurance policy, even a small death benefit … are a lifeline to surviving spouses and families," stated the article.
In Hardesty v. Hamburg Township (2006), the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that officers’ entry into a home had been permissible. A dissenting judge referenced the 1990 holiday film Home Alone.
A father and son sued municipal parties alleging that their constitutional rights had been violated when police officers entered their home without a warrant. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in Hardesty v. Hamburg Township (2006), concluded that the officers’ entry into the home had been permissible.
One of the issues was whether anyone was home at the time of the entry. A dissenting judge explained that the question is not always so simple. He recalled that in the 1990 holiday film Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin’s character, an 8-year old boy, was able to outwit passers-by, convincing them that he was "not home alone by using radios, televisions, lights and cardboard cutouts."
Randy Maniloff is an attorney at White and Williams in Philadelphia concentrating his practice in the representation of insurers in coverage disputes over primary and excess obligations under a host of policies. He is also an adjunct professor at the Temple University Beasley School of Law. He runs the website CoverageOpinions.info.
