SPECTRUM OF DESIRE: LOVE, SEX AND GENDER IN THE MIDDLE AGES Set in the stunning atmosphere of The Met Cloisters, this exhibition explores the often-overlooked themes of desire, sexuality, and gender in the medieval past, a period of time when most artistic production served religious purposes.
Desire in the Middle Ages was multifaceted. It could be courtly or carnal, sacred or subversive, and expressed as a kind of longing, suffering, or joy. Medieval artists could be both deeply serious and comical in their evocations of these feelings. Drawing on decades of scholarship, Spectrum of Desire opens up new ways of seeing the past through stirring works of art that inspire us to think more expansively about people who lived in the Middle Ages, their relationships, and the artworks they produced.
Featuring more than fifty works—from gold jewelry and ivory sculptures to stained glass, illuminated manuscripts, and woven textiles—this exhibition showcases the richness of visual expression in western Europe from the 13th to the 15th century, drawing primarily from The Met collection. This exploration of the visual language of desire in its many forms invites us to reflect on our own ideas of love, identity, and kinship today.
Through March 29, 2026 at the Met Cloisters in Gallery 002, New York City.

SWEET CHARITY
MELISSA ERRICO will present a special one-night-only public presentation of The Story of a Rose: A Musical Reverie on the Great War on Tuesday, January 13 at New World Stages. The event is presented by Doughboy Foundation, dedicated to preserving the legacy and memory of World War I.
Created by and starring Errico, The Story of a Rose is an intimate and lyrical theatrical experience that weaves together music, storytelling, and history to reflect on the human cost of the Great War. Through song and reflection, the piece explores love, loss, and remembrance, offering audiences a poignant meditation on a conflict that reshaped the modern world but is too often forgotten.
Known for her luminous Broadway performances and her acclaimed work as a concert and recording artist, Errico brings both emotional depth and historical curiosity to this deeply personal project. The presentation offers a rare opportunity to experience the work in a theatrical setting before a live New York audience.
“This evening is about remembrance, reflection, and honoring the voices of those who lived through the Great War,” said Errico. “It’s a privilege to share this piece in partnership with The Doughboy Foundation.”
The Doughboy Foundation, Stewards of the National World War 1 Memorial, educates the public about the American experience in the Great War. The Foundation does this through school-based educator programs, a performance series and the sounding of Taps daily at the National WW1 Memorial. The Foundation commemorates the experience of Americans who served, honors the 4.7 million Americans who put on the uniform to answer the call of their country and inspires future generations to learn about, remember and understand how World War 1 transformed our country and the world and the sacrifices made by many. The Doughboy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C.
SPREADING THE WORD
STAGE CAT LOOKING FOR A FOREVER HOME "Miss Molly came to the Historic North Theatre in Danville, VA wanting to be cast in a production of CATS. Well, actually we found her in the theatre parking lot, confessed theatre ownerand magician Wayne Alan. "We befriended her and are now fostering her. She's had her shots, is litter box trained and very sweet. She's still skittish even though she is getting better. If you can help us find her a good home please call the theatre at 434-793-SHOW (7469)."

CHELSEA FACTORY FOUNDER JIM HERBERT has announced that the organization, conceived as a five-year arts initiative in response to the city’s post-pandemic recovery needs, is directing a significant legacy gift to The Joyce Theater Foundation following its planned closure earlier this year. The Chelsea Factory Legacy Fund will enable The Joyce to continue the mission that guided Chelsea Factory’s work: supporting new creation, artist opportunity, and meaningful public engagement. This gift reflects Chelsea Factory’s intention that its remaining resources continue to serve New York’s artistic ecosystem long after its doors have closed.
Chelsea Factory was established in 2021 by Jim Herbert, with Lauren Kiel serving as Executive Director and Donald Borror as Managing Director, and a board including Linda Shelton, Andrea Miller, and Ariel Patrick. The community arts hub was conceived as a limited-term initiative designed to respond quickly and creatively to post-pandemic recovery needs . Over its tenure, Chelsea Factory hosted more than 3,000 artists, including 15 resident artists; partnered with more than 100 New York City arts organizations; presented more than 300 free public programs and events, welcomed over 40,000 attendees, and invested significantly in artists through direct financial support.
In preparing for its completion, Chelsea Factory undertook a comprehensive effort to ensure that its remaining assets would continue to benefit the broader arts community—donating or selling equipment at substantially reduced costs to organizations throughout the city and distributing two rounds of grants to a selection of its resident artists. Even after this redistribution, funds remained. These resources—an initial amount of approximately $170,000—are now being placed in the care of The Joyce to be awarded over the next three to five years in support of the development and presentation of new dance works. All distribution decisions will be made solely by The Joyce, in keeping with its longstanding commitment to investing in artists at every stage of their creative process.
“We are deeply grateful for this gift and for the trust it represents,” said Linda Shelton, Executive Director of The Joyce Theater Foundation. “Chelsea Factory’s commitment to artists, experimentation, and access aligns profoundly with our own mission. This gift enables us to support even more artists as they create bold new work and share it with the public, ensuring that Chelsea Factory’s remarkable impact continues to be felt.”

KANJINCHO a classic kabuki play given a modern twist by young dramaturg Yuichi Kinoshita.
Director Sugio Kunihara.
Kanjincho will have four performances only: Thursday, January 8; Friday, January 9 and Saturday, January 10 at Japan Society. Presented in Japanese with English supertitles. Performance runs approximately 80 minutes. This presentation of Kanjincho at Japan Society kicks off a three-city U.S. tour produced and organized by Japan Society, with additional stops in Greenville, SC (January 16) and Houston, TX (January 21 & 22).
Recognized as a masterpiece of kabuki theater, the surprisingly evergreen tale of Kanjincho (The Subscription List) presents a whirlwind of deception, quick wit and action set in 12th century Japan. During the height of a civil conflict known as the Genpei War, a group of refugees disguised as mountain priests attempt to cross a security checkpoint to safety. Apprehended by the uncompromising inspector Togashi, a nail-biting repartee ensues with both parties’ lives at stake. In their signature style for filtering bombastic traditional kabuki through the prism of contemporary theater, Kinoshita Kabuki offers a pop culture-drenched take on this kabuki classic about crossing and transcending borders. After receiving widespread acclaim in Japan and Europe, this production makes its North American debut at Japan Society as part of Under the Radar, America’s premier experimental performance festival.
Kinoshita Kabuki’s whimsical dramatization of Kanjincho envisions kabuki theater in the look, sound and style of the 21st century. While deeply faithful to the original play, the script’s modern reworking has gone through a sharp, line-by-line modern colloquial “translation” by Yuichi Kinoshita. Under the guidance of Kinoshita and director Kunio Sugihara, the actors’ approach meticulously replicates the movements, gestures and lines of the original kabuki play, and builds upon this foundation to create a humorous and thoroughly modern piece while retaining the spirit of kabuki.
The company, wearing black trainers, perform accompanied by techno and hip-hop on a stage loosely resembling the shape of a hanamachi, or “flower path” (an iconic raised walkway used in kabuki theater that extends from the stage and runs between the audience), illuminated by bright neon lights and littered with Japanese junk food.
Through casting, stage design, direction and script, Kinoshita Kabuki’s modernized rendition of Kanjincho also grapples with and collapses the many manifestations of “crossing boundaries,” whether national borders, master-servant relationships, race, gender… or the past and the present. In the words of Kinoshita Kabuki, Kanjincho, at its core, is ultimately a story about “various kinds of boundaries which must be crossed, which cannot be crossed and which people refrain from crossing.”
Kinoshita Kabuki, a contemporary theater company based in Kyoto, Japan, was founded in 2006 by Yuichi Kinoshita. Inspired by Kinoshita’s own passion for classical kabuki, Kinoshita Kabuki endeavors to reawaken interest in this traditional art among modern audiences. With this aim in mind, Kinoshita set out to stage kabuki works in unconventional ways, adapting scripts with sharp colloquial language, incorporating pop culture and utilizing classic themes to grapple with current societal issues, all while remaining deeply grounded in the original work. In order to approach kabuki from a variety of perspectives, pieces presented by Kinoshita Kabuki customarily feature new cast members and an external director. After receiving accolades throughout Europe and East Asia, this production marks Kinoshita Kabuki’s North American debut.
