CELEBRATING HANKSGIVING

I didn't even though there something called Hanksgiving. Oh sure, everyone knows there is a living icon named Tom Hanks. Even though Hanks is a two-time Academy Award winning actor, writer and author. His novel The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece is a New York Times Best Seller. His charitable coffee line, Hanx: For Our Troops, with all profits go to those who serve, and their families - should we be celebrating him?

You bet!

For at least 15 years, Chinwag podcast states it started in 2009 with its own traditions and food.

Celebrations abound. People decorate their home in all things Tom, dressing up as one of his many characters, eating food renamed for him, playing trivia games, binge watching his movies and having a glorious time.

For the last three years, New York City based comedian Lily Lester and her friends have gathered to share Hanksgiving together. That’s means a Tom Hanks-themed Thanksgiving in which they all give thanks to actor Tom Hanks for his creative work.

The hosting home is decorated with numerous Tom Hanks crafts and the attendees bring Hanks-themed dishes and all cosplay as characters that Tom Hanks has portrayed on film and television. At the end, they give out awards for the best dish and best costume.

This year Vuture republished a piece which originally ran in November 2013. "There is a growing tradition around this time of year, in which families gather for a big feast to honor a national hero who ushered the U.S. into a new age of balancing romantic-comedy charm and serious acting chops: Yes, it is Hanksgiving, a time to give T.Hanks for Tom Hanks. The adults sit in a circle and talk about what they’re T.Hankful for (perhaps this year it’s Captain Phillips, Saving Mr. Banks, Broadway’s Lucky Guy, or his delightful Reddit AMA?) and then sing the annual holiday standard, "That Thing You Do" by the Wonders. (Meanwhile, the kids trace their fists and then draw in a Big-era Hanks head.) This new annual event has mostly existed online, but it is time that this tradition becomes less virtual and more edible. To make that happen, Vulture has designed a menu for an actual Hanksgiving feast: We teamed up with our very own Bosom-Buddy blog Grub Street to design a meal of truly delicious and original Hanks-themed dishes. Gather your family of Hanks lovers and get cooking! (And just think of all the screening possibilities for after dinner.)"

Vulture provides recipes to the renamed dishes - some movies honored more than once. IMDB received credit for the movie lists and seriouseats for the clever name changes. urbanemovies published the list in 2018 as a popularity poll contest.

Some of the rechristened foods are: from Saving Private Ryan (1998) to Cravin' Private Fryin'Turkey - - Forrest Gump (1994) to Forrest Pump-kin Pie Pumpkin - - Catch Me If You Can (2002) to Catch Me If You Cran-berries - - The Green Mile (1999) to The Bean Pile - - Band of Brothers (2001) to Brandy of Brothers - - Saving Mr. Banks (2013) to Glazing Mr. Shanks - - Toy Story 2 (1999) to A Soy Story Too - - Cast Away (2000) to Cast Iron Way -- Apollo 13 (1995) to Apollo Thirtahini - - The Terminal (2004) to The Corn-minal - - Big (1988) to Pig - - Bridge of Spies (2015) to Frigid of Pies - - Sleepless in Seattle (1993) to Sweetness in Se-Apple - - Turner & Hooch (1989) to Turnips & Hooch - - Inferno (2016) to Inferno Pasta -- Captain Phillips (2013) to Country Captain Phillips (stew) - - Road to Perdition (2002) to Mode to Perfection Salad - - You've Got Mail (1998) to You've Got Kale - - A League of Their Own (1992) to A Leek of Their Own - - Punchline (1988) to Punch Lime - - The Post (2017) to The Roast - - The Ladykillers (2004) to Ladyfinger Chillers - - Charlie Wilson's War (2007) to Cauli Wilson's War - - That Thing You Do! (1996) to That Stuff-ing You Do - - The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) to Bonfire of the Cranberries - - The Circle (2017) to The Circle (which is made with crescent dinner rolls) - - Philadelphia (1993) to Philadelphia Cheese Cake - - Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) to Dough versus the Volcano - - The Polar Express (2004) to Roller Express - - The Da Vinci Code (2006) to The Da Vinci Pasta Lode - - From the Earth to the Moon (1998) to From the Hearth to the Loon - - Splash (1984) to Spl-Hash - - Bosom Buddies (1980) to Bosom Spuddies - - The 'Burbs (1989) to The 'Herbs -- A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) to Mr. Rogers' Banana Day Back to Childhood.

All come with a list of ingredients, some with clever directions including Bosom Spuddies in which the cook is told to use potatoes grown in Moose Bosom, Maine, "served mashed-style prepared while wearing clothing of the opposite sex."

Unlike Thanksgiving where you may be compelled, in the name of family harmony, to spend time with relatives and assorted people you don't really like, in celebrating Hanksgiving, you are with others who also worship at the prop store pedestal of Tom Hanks.

In the last two week Hanksgiving events have been held across the country.

The Coalition Theatre inRichmond, Virginia, which specializes in "live comedy, dead serious," staged a "special Thanks" Hanksgiving event - a "special holiday episode of the Coalition's live tabletop role playing comedy show! It's the most festival time of the year: Hanksgiving! The most merry of times, when all of the characters played by American treasure Tom Hanks gather together for a wholesome family gathering... but this year, tragedy strikes. Due to an unknown force, the worlds of the Hanksverse are colliding, and it's up to a team of classic Hanks personas to embark on a daring adventure to save Hanksgiving!"

"In this special holiday episode of the Coalition's live tabletop role playing comedy show, the adventure is driven by audience suggestions collected before the show and the successes and failures of dice rolls made by the players. Starring Peter Trauernicht, Dustin Correale, Matt Newman, and game master Adam Stackhouse. Happy Hanksgiving to all!"

On November 20 the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship of New Mexico Tech in Socorro, New Mexico staged their popular T.Hanksgiving dinner at the Student Activity Center "where we have home-cooked hanksgiving food and watch a Tom Hanks movie to celebrate. This year we will be watching "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and thanks to generous donations from the Socorro community, we will have tons of delicious food! (NMT Dining has no affiliation with this event.) Food Provided - turkeys, mashed potatoes, gravy, mac and cheese, cranberry sauce, etc."

T-Hanksgiving Trivia took place November 27, 2024 at Alex's Bar in Long Beach, CA.

The joint advertised "Bring the whole damn family and test your knowledge on all things Tom Hanks as we pre-game Turkey Day!

With a 300 person capacity, this 21+ event coat $5 cash to play, free to watch with teams up to 6 people playing.

9th-annual Hanksgiving! in Austin Texas, hosted by Robert Boler was a success. "Welcome back to the totally real (and now all-grown-up!) holiday in which we gather to enjoy each others’ Tom Hanks-themed/punny dishes, pop in a couple Hanks flicks, and share what we’re Hankful for."

Everyone was asked to bring a Hanks' inspired food and the attendees didn't know the address until after they RSVPed.

Also in Austin, Master Pancake staged a Hanksgiving Weekend November 13-15, 2024 with a Brunch and four day showing of Hanks' movies including The Di Vinci Code. Master Pancake is tied in with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which has venues across the United States. Every year since 2011 they have staged their annual Tom Hanks razz-trospective Hanksgiving. The month long event celebrates the actor and even includes a trivia contest, a giant keyboard for Big fanatics, and screenings of Tom Hanks movies. This year the movies inclucded The Polar Expres.

thevacationlander posted: "Happy Tom Hanksgiving! Tonight, I’m kicking my feet up and watching the only Tom Hanks film shot in Maine. And did you know… the running sequence in Forrest Gump was actually paid for by Hanks and director, Robert Zemeckis, knowing it would be worth the investment and getting a profit-sharing deal with the studio."

On November 27, 2024 the podcast "Film & Whiskey" featuring Bob ad Brad "continue their annual Hanksgiving tradition by spotlighting Tom Hanks' gripping performance in Captain Phillips (2013). The duo explores the film's powerful themes, memorable scenes, and how Hanks embodies the titular role." Then, they reviewed a bottle of whiskey - hence theirpodcast name Film & Whiskey.

Another podcast "Bullseye With Jesse Thorn" aired on NPR on November 26, 2024.

"Come to the table and join us, as we celebrate "Hanksgiving!", the promo of the 58 minute listen intoned.

"That's right, our guest this week is Tom Hanks. The legendary actor from Forrest Gump, Sleepless in Seattle, Saving Private Ryan, Joe Versus the Volcano and so many more! "Tom's just reunited with Robert Zemeckis and Robin Wright, director and co-star from Forrest Gump for a new movie called Here. It's a film that spans literal eons: the camera starts from one spot at the very beginning of time and stays in that one shot, right up until the present day.

"When Tom joined us on the show around this time two years ago, he'd just starred in A Man Called Otto. An adaptation of the hit book A Man Called Ove.

"It's a story about growth. Tom plays Otto Anderson, the title character in the film. He's charitably "grouchy." But there's a reason. When the movie begins, Otto is mourning the loss of his wife, Sonya. He's not sure how he'll move on with his life until a new family moves into the neighborhood with their two daughters: Marisol and Tommy. The film explores Otto's budding relationship with his neighbors – a friendship that becomes a life changing experience.

"Tom Hanks joins the show to talk about the limits of charm, shares driving etiquette tips and his shift from comedy acting to working in drama."

Movie Hall of Fame podcast presented by toomanythoughtmsedia celebrates Hanksgiving. "It’s a yearly tradition like no other. Why spend time with your actual family when you can spend time with America’s Dad, Tom Hanks? "

For instance, last year hosts Nico and Adam spotlighted Hanks’s early career with five of his 80s comedies.

In Milwaukee the Neighborhood Theater Group (NTG) announced they were celebrating "Hanksgiving" on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 with special tickets and discounts. The event included screenings of Big, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've Got Mail.

Hanksgiving even turned political.

On November 28, 2015 a petition was created by John Smith for Change.org to have the United States declare 'Hanksgiving' a national holiday.

The petition stated:
"We live in fractious times and there's so few things that we as Americans can agree on. One by one we've seen the most respected members of our society -- our celebrities -- let us down. But one man has never let us down, one man has for thirty years represented everything great about our country's tradition of films directed by Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis and Ron Howard. That man is Tom Hanks.

"Thus, we ask that President Barack Obama use his constitutional powers to officially declare the third Saturday of each November "Hanksgiving" in honor of Tom Hanks, a man who has never let us down.

"Think of it... television stations and film distributors would receive tax benefits for celebrating his entire catalog, and those effects could play out in unimaginably wonderful ways.

"This day would do more than honor Tom Hanks, it'd benefit the United States far more than could be imagined, and would really help make America great again:

"This would be a boon to America's grand artificial sweetener industry, since all Hanksgiving desserts will honor Hanks' status as a diabetic and be sugar free.
"Stores would see record profits selling sugar-free cakes bearing the faces of Tom, Meg Ryan and Gary Sinise.
"This would serve as an olive branch to our allies in Portugal, since Tom Hanks is the most famous American of Portugese descent (sorry Meredith Viera).
"Thus we the undersigned humbly ask that President Obama or President Trump honor this great man and that they do it soon, in case his diabetes gets worse."

The petition contained 28 signatures.

Neither President Obama nor then income president Donald J. Trump responded to the petition.

Unfortunately, I missed out on all of the Hanksgiving this year. However, next Hanksgiving I'm going to be front and center.

Recently in a one hour and ten minute interview Brandreth spoke with two guests, Michael Ball and Alfie Boe who have a new album Together At Home and are on tour with the arena version of Les Miserables, followed by their own arena tour.

Asked on the Rosebud podcast what the difference is between performing in front of 22,000 at the O2 Arena and the smaller venues of a few thousand, Ball quipped: "The money."

Shortly thereafter Ball divulged that about 15 years ago he was encouraged into trying Botox. "I came out looking like a Klingon." He indicated that his eyes look strange and "dropped in the middle." Then he added: "I had a manic killer stare and stayed that way for six months. Never again."

IS YOUR CHRISTMAS SPIRIT OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE? in a tongue in cheek essay published Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology organization.

Although the symptoms of Christmas Spirit may resemble the symptoms of a Hypomanic Episode, a Substance- Abuse Disorder, or Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, these syndromes can be distinguished from Christmas Spirit on the basis of their course (with the onset of Christmas Spirit symptoms coming in November and sudden remission in late December). The two disorders share a number of features. Those experiencing Christmas Spirit may be highly perfectionistic, unable to delegate responsibility unless the task is done precisely according to their instructions, rigid, stubborn, and preoccupied with details, lists, organization, schedules, and order.

In some instances, individuals with Christmas Spirit also show obsessive and compulsive symptoms. For example, tree lights and tinsel may need to be hung in perfect symmetry, and specific foods may need to be prepared according to specific recipes and served for specific meals, using specific serving dishes. Although these compulsions may be attributed to family traditions, individuals overcome with Christmas Spirit may experience significant anxiety, distress, and hostility if the rituals are not performed perfectly, leading to disharmony within the family.

However, Christmas Spirit is not associated with the miserly spending style that often characterizes Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder or the devotion to work to the exclusion of friendship and leisure activities.

Although the individual experiencing Christmas Spirit may be overly conscientious and scrupulous, that is generally attributed to a concern that "Santa is watching." Second, although the person experiencing high levels of Christmas Spirit may be unable to discard worn-out or useless objects (e.g., old Christmas cards and letters, old presents, and broken ornaments made by kindergarteners who now have children of their own), the reasons for retaining the items are clearly sentimental."

We live in a world in which incredible wildlife exists and I want that for the generations that follow. I want my children to live in a world where swallows still migrate, gorillas still live in the cloud forests of Uganda and rhinos still roam the arid rangelands of Namibia. It will be thanks to extraordinary leaders such as those that we are celebrating today that this will happen."

CHUCK WOOLERY an American game show host, talk show host, actor, musician and pod show host died November 23, 2024. He was 83.

Woolery was the original host of the original daytime Wheel of Fortune (1975–1981). In 1978 he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host or Hostess in a Game or Audience Participation Show.

Woolery left Wheel over a money dispute with Merv Griffin after Woolery in 1981 discovered that he was getting paid $65K a year which paled in comparison to what his competitors were earning. A salary dispute with the program's producers ensued. In a 2007 interview he recalled that he demanded a raise from $65,000 a year to about $500,000 a year because the program was drawing a 44 viewership share at the time, and other hosts (such as Richard Dawson and Bob Barker) were making that much. Merv Griffin offered Woolery $400,000 a year, and NBC offered to pay the additional $100,000, but after Griffin threatened to move the program to CBS, NBC withdrew the offer. Woolery's contract was not renewed and his final episode aired on December 25, 1981.

He also was the original incarnation of Love Connection (1983–1994), Scrabble (1984–1990, and during a brief revival in 1993), Greed on Fox from 1999 to 2000, and Lingo on Game Show Network from 2002 to 2007. Woolery's musical career includes several advertising jingles, a top-40 pop hit with the psychedelic pop duo The Avant-Garde, and a number of country music releases.

He was married and divorced four times and had five children who survive him.
