READERS WANT AI DISCLOSURE, SAYS YOU GOV POLL CONDUCTED WITH BLACK CHATEAU ENTERPRISES

Whether in outlining, writing, developmental editing, or even line and copy editing—before they begin reading - readers want to know if and how AI was used.

According to the official releases, this polling data offers timely insight into how AI is reshaping the literary world, and how readers are responding to its use. As tools like large language models and generative AI are increasingly utilized for everything from brainstorming and outlining to full manuscript writing and editing, the debate within the literary community has become increasingly heated. This survey helps illuminate the reader’s perspective and offers valuable insights for both the publishing industry and the broader literary world.

Key Findings from the Survey Include:

A majority of readers (56%) say they want disclosure if AI was involved in any stage of a book’s creation—including outlining, writing, editing, or proofreading—and they want to know before they begin reading.

An additional 20% want disclosure if more than 10% of the book was written using AI.

Meanwhile, 14% say they don’t care whether AI was used.

10% are unsure.

More than one in four readers (28%) believe AI should never be used in the book creation process.

However, 40% say it is acceptable if limited to line or copy editing.
Smaller proportions are open to AI use for ideation (11%).
24% said AI use is acceptable for outlining.
13% said AI use is acceptable for developmental editing.
16% said AI use is acceptable for beta reading.
13% said they are unsure.
When asked how they’d feel if they read a book without knowing it was AI-written:

44% said they’d feel "much less fulfilled"

17% said "somewhat less fulfilled"

2% said they’d feel "much more fulfilled"

3% said "somewhat more fulfilled"

20% said there would be no change in how fulfilled they felt

An episode of YouGov’s Reality Checks podcast dissects the data, with host Brian Reitz, YouGov’s Senior Marketing Manager, and Desireé Duffy, Founder of Black Château Enterprises, engaging in a revealing conversation. Together they explore how readers responded to the survey. Their discussion highlights trends across generations and genres and offers insights into what the future may hold for AI in publishing and literature.

The podcast interview also dives into the types of books readers consume, how those preferences shape their views on AI, and how acceptance of AI in books compares across generations. Some of the findings surprised both Reitz and Duffy, challenging common assumptions about reader behavior.

"The results were really shocking in some cases," says Duffy. "I enjoyed unpacking them with Brian and watching the numbers appear live during our interview—you’ll see my jaw drop more than once. It just goes to show how valuable it is to hear directly from the public. These are exactly the kinds of insights today’s publishing industry and writers need."

The episode highlights key findings from the survey, offering meaningful insights for anyone in publishing, marketing, or storytelling.

ART AND ABOUT

THEATRE PICASSO AT TATE MODERN Marking the centenary of Pablo Picasso's famous painting The Three Dancers, this exhibition explores the artists relationship with performance.

Picasso was fascinated by performers and their boundless capacity for transformation, and he approached painting as a dramatic act in itself.

Central to this was the construction of his own public persona or brand – Picasso 'the artist' – a mythologized version of Picasso which portrayed him as both a celebrated creative genius and an outsider. Staged by celebrated contemporary artist Wu Tsang and author and curator Enrique Fuenteblanca, the exhibition sheds new light on Picasso’s work, transforming the exhibition space into a theatre for displaying over 45 works by Picasso from Tate's collection, alongside key European loans. This includes paintings, sculpture, textile and works on paper, some never seen in the UK before.

Theatre Picasso is open from September 17, 2025 - April 12, 2026, presented in the The George Economou Gallery, Tate Modern, London.

SWEET CHARITY

MUSIC KITCHEN is celebrating 20 years as the pioneer organization to bring classical music to those experiencing homelessness! From this little idea that musician Kelly Hall-Tompkins started in her church basement, over 200 artists have reached an estimated 30,000 shelter clients, performing in venues all over the United States and in Paris, France, and making forgotten voices heard from shelters around New York City to Carnegie Hall, NBC TODAY, The New York Times, STRINGS Magazine and PBS, to film festivals around the world, and on our critically acclaimed album Forgotten Voices, featuring 15 award-winning composers and the words of shelter clients we've met along the way.

The Violinist isalso thrilled to announce that, in celebration of our 20th anniversary, Music Kitchen has been awarded a generous grant from the Morris and Alma Shapiro Fund.

"This month, we also honor the passing of one of our kindest, most generous and loyal supporters, and a dear friend to me, Bonnie Eggers, who, together with her husband Pastor Bill Eggers, have been supporters of Music Kitchen for nearly a decade. We are saddened by her passing but so very honored that, in lieu of flowers for the recent Memorial Services, the family generously selected Music Kitchen to receive donations in Bonnie's memory.

EMMY WINNER AYO EDEBIRI AND ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE DON CHEADLE will make their Broadway debuts next spring in the first-ever New York revival of David Auburn’s Tony- and Pulitzer-winning play Proof. Proof premiered Off-Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club in 2000, selling out its initial run before transferring to Broadway, where it won three Tony awards, including Best Play. Proof closed January 5, 2003, after 917 performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre, setting the venue record for a play. In 2001, Proof received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 2005, Proof was adapted into a feature film starring Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow.

SUN RECORDS CELEBRATES 70 years of Blue Suede Shoes with never-before heard Carl Perkins album, It is often considered one of the first rockabilly songs.

Now a 10-song collection "Some Things Never Change" with "Blue Suede Shoes" produced by Grammy-nominated songwriter, musician, recording artist, and producer Bill Lloyd. Nashville-based Lloyd is often remembered as half of the chart-topping country-rock duo Foster & Lloyd. Some Things Never Change couldn’t be a truer proclamatory title. Perkins sounds full of vigor and swagger, making 1990—the year it was recorded—feel as vital as 1955, ground zero for rockabilly’s genesis. The recordings are complete with all the classic fixings: slapback echo, twanging guitars, snarled singing, and dreamy balladry.

The first single,“Memphis in the Meantime,” was written by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter John Hiatt, and appeared on his 1987 album. Here, it’s a barnburner honky tonk tune that sounds like a lost rockabilly classic. Upon hearing the new version, Hiatt said, "Carl Perkins is what 'Memphis In The Meantime' is all about."

Some Things Never Change also boasts a rousing rendition of Johnny Cash’s "Get Rhythm,” as well as previously unrecorded originals like the high torque rockabilly number “Baby, Bye Bye,” the moony ballad "Some Things Never Change," and the pastoral country-folk song, "Where Does Love Go."

Joining the sessions were Perkins’ sons Stan (drums) and Greg (bass), pianist Joe Schenk, and studio aces Jerry Douglas and Pete Finney. The recordings, thought lost for decades, were rediscovered in 2024 on a DAT in Lloyd’s archive. These never-before-heard recordings showcase Perkins’ freewheeling rockabilly style and classic vocals near the end of his career.

Some Things Never Change will be pressed at Memphis Record Pressing. "All the legendary Sun Records releases were cut in Memphis—including ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’” says Brandon Seavers, Co-Founder & CEO of Memphis Record Pressing. "It’s an honor to press this lost treasure trove of a Carl Perkins album right back where it all began."

Perkins was one of Sun Records’ brightest stars, known for his classic track “Blue Suede Shoes” that became a hit for fellow Sun artist Elvis Presley. A rockabilly icon, Perkins is known for his rock solid rockers like “Honey Don’t,” Matchbox,” and more. Enshrined in institutions like the Rock

and Roll Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame, Perkins made an undeniable impact on the history of American music. Perkins’ songs have been recorded by the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Ricky Nelson, and Eric Clapton, among many others.

BARBARA GOODHILL the beloved development director of the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles, retires after 12 years of transformative service to the organization.

Under Goodhill's stewardship, the theater has expanded its donor base, secured critical funding for award-winning productions, and deepened its engagement with the Los Angeles community.

In recognition of her invaluable contributions, the Fountain will dedicate the Barbara Goodhill Community Room, a welcoming space for audiences, artists and neighbors to gather before and after performances, participate in talkbacks, and engage in meaningful dialogue. The new space will serve as a lasting tribute to Goodhill’s belief that theater thrives when it brings people together — and will be made possible through gifts to the theater’s 35th Anniversary campaign.

"The Fountain Theatre is precious to me,"says Goodhill. "It is a unique cultural oasis where Angelenos have experienced meaningful community and great theater for 35 years. This little theater on Fountain Avenue may be small in size, but it is huge in artistry, heart and community. What a gift. What a legacy. I look forward to seeing the Fountain, its legacy and community, grow and prosper long into the future."
