EVERYBODY RISE CELEBRATES STEPHEN SONDHEIM

Stephen Sondheim. Picture: Signature Theatre
The Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia owes much to Stephen Sondheim and his canon. They acknowledge that debt. Their first production Sweeney Todd put Signature Theatre on the map.

His death was a blow - not just to this theatre- but to the musical community at large.

This splendid tribute concert was filmed before a live audience on December 13, 2021 shortly after Sondheim’s passing on November 26 at age 91.

Everybody Rise: Signature Remembers Stephen Sondheim features 16 musical performances from 13 shows, including Company, Into the Woods, A Little Night Music, Saturday Night, and Merrily We Roll Along.

Kudos to Jon Kalbfeisch, who has directed every production in Signature's Sondheim history. He backs the performers with his expert tinkling of the ivories.

The concert stars a number of top flight performers who have appeared in Sondheim musicals at Signature, including Evan Casey, Natascia Diaz, Erin Driscoll, James Gardiner, Nicholas McDonough, Christopher Mueller, Katie Mariko Murray, Tracy Lynn Olivera, Nova Y. Payton, Christopher Michael Richardson, Maria Rizzo, Awa Sal Secka, Bobby Smith, Holly Twyford, John Leslie Wolfe, and Rachel Zampelli.

A musical countdown leads into Virginia Signature Theatre's uplifting salute to the legendary Stephen Sondheim. Matthew Gardiner Artistic Director introduces the program - Sondheim's musicals are an experience - not just a passing moment.

As it is explained, the gospel of Stephen Sondheim is revered and celebrated in this exceptional presentation.

As a lyricist his words are to live by - words which weren't as detached as much as emotionally engulfing. In many ways he set the standards.

Well coordinated costumes from cocktail to casual, which complemented but didn't distract or overpower the numbers. Appropriate, elegant lighting and well balanced sound.

A trio presentation by Awa Sal Secka, Tracy Lynn Olivera, and Nova Y. Payton of Broadway Baby from Follies was a perfect opening number followed by Erin Driscoll's solo turn of What More Do I Need? from Saturday Night. Nicholas McDonough took up the banner with Love, I Hear from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

John Leslie Wolfe delivered Pretty Women from Sweeney Todd. Natascia Diaz offered Loving You from Passion.

Sondheim could rip your heart out as is demonstrated with Christopher Michael Richardson's heart tugging rendition of Good Thing Going from Merrily We Roll Along followed by Awa Sal Secka presenting Not a Day Goes By from the same production.

Maria Rizzo changes the mood a bit with the determined Sooner or Later from Dick Tracy.

Unworthy of Your Love from Assassins is a powerful duet by Sarah Jencks and Evan Casey.

Giants in the Sky is a fast paced number from Into the Woods distinctly performed by Christopher Mueller.

Natascia Diaz and Katie Mariko Murray deliver a powerful warning in A Boy Like That from West Side Story

Changing the mood is Getting Married Today an uplifting, effervescent ditty from Company performed by Katie Mariko Murray, Tracey Lynnn Olivera and Christopher Mueller. Setting out his expectation of marriage, Bobby Smith vocalizing a bravo rendition of Marry Me a Little which completed the tribute to Company.

Holly Twyford had a poignant rendition of Send In The Clowns from A Little Night Music.

Maggie Boland then appears on stage to close out the evening stressing that Signature Theatre is the preeminent booster of Sondheim's work. She stressed that the Signature will continue to honor Sondheim in several ways including the presentation of the Sondheim Award.

Our Time from Merrily We Roll Along begins the closing segment with James Gardiner, Nicholas McDonough and Tracy Lynn Olivera. Children Will Listen/Sunday at first sung by Nova Y. Payton before being joined by the rest of the outstanding cast is a warning worth heeding.

This stream is free to enjoy through Monday, January 17, 2022.

Directed and conceived by Signature’s Artistic Director Matthew Gardiner. The creative team includes lighting designer Jonathan Maag, sound designer Ryan Hickey, stage manager Kerry Epstein, and follow spot operators L Bruce and Jared Loeb, with production management by Kimberly J. Scott and wardrobe by Moyenda Kulemeka.

The concert was filmed by Chiet Productions with camera operators Justin Chiet, James Gardiner, Jeremy Jacoby, and Natalie Ridgley. Sound editing is by Ryan Hickey while James Gardiner eJames Gardiner, edited and color corrected the concert for video.

ART AND ABOUT

PRINCE CHARLES commissioned seven leading artists to paint seven of the last survivors of the Holocaust, for display at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace. The portraits which were commissioned in March 2020 are now finished and will stand as a lasting reminder of horrors which will one day be lost to living memory.

The portraits will go on display at Buckingham Palace from Holocaust Memorial Day, January 27 and from March at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

Charles, patron of the National Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, said: "As the number of Holocaust survivors sadly, but inevitably, declines, my abiding hope is that this special collection will act as a further guiding light for our society, reminding us not only of history's darkest days, but of humanity's interconnectedness as we strive to create a better world for our children, grandchildren and generations as yet unborn..."

A SPIDER MAN COMIC BOOK SINGLE PAGE OF ARTWORK
Photo: Heritage Auctions
was gaveled down by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas for $3.36m - called "a record smashing bid."

The record setting bid kicked off Heritage Auction's four-day comic auction in Dallas.

The Heritage Aucton on Thursday, January 13, 2022 - presented a single page of artwork by Mike Zeck printed on page 25 of Marvel Comic's Secret Wars No. 8 which contained the first appearance of Spider's black suit. That alien symbiote eventually becomes Venom.

The comic book containing the art work originally sold for 12 cents in 1962.

The previous record for an interior page of a U.S. comic book was $657,250 for an art from a 1974 issue of The Incredible Hulk that featured a promo for the first appearance of Woverine.

PICASSO AND THE ALLURE OF THE SOUTH a celebration of Pablo Picasso’s flourishing creativity in the south of France and northern Spain. Organized by The Dalí Museum in collaboration with the Musée national Picasso-Paris,Picasso and the Allure of the South offers a fascinating new avenue for understanding Picasso’s artistic spirit through the lens of this unique geographical zone. Some of Pablo Picasso's most creative periods took place during summer sojourns in the mountain and coastal communities of the Spanish and French border, including Céret, Sorgues, Vallauris, Horta de Ebro and Cadaqués.

The exhibition presents paintings, drawings and collages – approximately half of which have never been seen in the U.S. – from the Musée national Picasso-Paris, as well as the Leonard A. Lauder Cubist Collection, New York. The Dalí Museum is the only venue worldwide to present this exhibition, which is curated by Dr. William Jeffett, The Dalí Museum’s curator of special exhibitions.

Born in Málaga, Spain, in 1881, Picasso spent his formative years in Barcelona, where he learned to speak Catalan. In the many places he lived, worked and visited throughout the Pyrenees and Mediterranean, Picasso found inspiration from the area’s landforms, rituals and customs. Picasso and the Allure of the South presents an exceptional selection of portraits, still lifes, figural studies and landscapes dating from 1909 to 1972 that reflect Picasso’s career-long rapport with the provinces of his homeland and southern France.

The exhibition is divided into four thematic sections that trace the importance of the geographic region to Picasso’s work and legacy.

The Birth of Cubism features a selection of drawings and collages that address how specific places in northern Spain and southern France – far from the major cities of Paris and Barcelona – inspired Picasso’s early experimentation and evolution of Cubism.

From Cubism to Realism examines Picasso’s shift to a more playful approach to Cubist idioms and considers how the environment of the south profoundly impacted his landscapes, still lifes and portrayals of café habitués.

In the third section, Corridas de Sud – Bullfighting, the exhibition maps Picasso’s fascination with the corrida from a very young age.

The exhibition concludes with Surrealism and Beyond, when Picasso’s painting in the 1930s turned to a deep engagement with Surrealism.

Among the masterworks in the exhibition that have never before been on display in the U.S. are the canvasses Portrait de Madame Rosenberg and her Daughter (1918), a tour de force of naturalism and a return to order associated with classicism, tradition and Mediterranean culture; Woman at the Sideboard (1936); and The Kiss (1969), in which a balding and bearded figure, an avatar of the artist, is locked in a kiss with a dark-haired woman.

On view exclusively at The Dalí Museum January 29-May 22, 2022 at The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
