CHAOS REIGNS IN THE AWARD WINNING DEAD LONDON

What is thought to be a meteorite crashes down into a Russian lake, then is discovered to be what they have always feared.

Based on H.G. Wells’s classic tale of Martian invasion, Dead London written by Jack Bowman and Robert Valenine, directed by George Maddocks sees humanity defeated by a superior military force from another world. Recorded on location at Horsell Common, Surrey, and featuring Brian Blessed as the Voice of the Martians, Dead London was the winning entry in the 2013 War of the Worlds 75th Anniversary Contest. Available at Wireless Theatre Company.

The contest celebrates the story of War of the Worlds - both the classic radio drama as well as the HG Wells novel. Contest requirements were:

Arrival inside a meteorite.
Tripods are used for locomotion.
Massive destruction.
Natural biological solution.

Dead London captured first price Gold Medal and is captivating and fast paced.

Chaos reigns as evident by the excellent sound effects, which are an important requirement for this recording.

Starring Josephine Arden as Dr. Georgina Welles, Tom Slatter as Dr. Tom Kane/Survivor 2, Jack bowman as PC Toland, Matt Blair as Dr. Jeff Quinlan/Survivor 1, Matthew W. Hebden as Captain Glover/Dan, Mariele Runace-Temple as Newsreader and Brian Blessed as Martian Voices.

A group of British scientists investigate something crashing into a Russian sea, a location where space junk and meteorites like to claim as their final resting place.

Then the scientists discover something inside the meteorite with a diameter of 4 meters. At first the scientists are eager to explore describing it as "more fun than defusing road side bombs - unless, of course, it starts ticking."

Suddenly they discover a face like a mouse, two large eyes, skin like rotted leather - and something that looks like some sort of a scanning devise.

The science fiction horror story takes us into a world where power lines are all destroyed, no power on any grid, motion handling machines have taken over and the situation is described as surpassing "the blitz, 9/11 and the worst parts of the Bible."

The fact that they haven't stored much food in case of an emergency dawns upon then. There is a can of Spam. They have no food, water or any way to communicate with the outside world.

But governments have a plan ... a plan that requires abandoning certain values, and how one feels when a person they don't know, not even a last name, saves their life but dies in the process. Then what happens when the martians suddenly die?

Fascinating listening experience.

Dead London now contains 5 extra minutes of never-before-heard material.

Recording and Post-Production by Malcolm Thorp. Available on Wireless Theatre Company.

ART AND ABOUT

MEGHAN, DUCHESS OF SUSSEX'S
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the Oprah interview show. Her dress is named Dress of the Year Photo: youtube.
iconic black Giorgio Armani dress she wore for her March 2021 explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey has been announced as the Fashion Museum Bath’s Dress of the Year.

The $4,700 triple silk georgette dress with a lotus flower motif will go on display at the English museum as part of its headline exhibition, A History of Fashion in 100 Objects.

The designer has donated a version of the look for the display, according to the museum.

One of the defining pop-cultural moments of 2021, the highly anticipated two-hour Oprah television interview aired in nearly 70 countries and drew an estimated 60 million viewers worldwide. The dress the Duchess wore with a matching belt is from Giorgio Armani’s Spring/Summer 2022 Cruise Collection, which is still available to buy in America.

It’s well known that members of the Royal family often use outfits to send a message through their choice of style, color or motif. It was reported that the Duchess chose a dress with a lotus flower design because of the flower’s symbolic association with rebirth, self-regeneration and spiritual enlightenment, and its ability to flourish despite seemingly challenging conditions.

Each year, the museum asks leaders in the fashion world to choose a Dress of the Year that "encapsulates the prevailing mood of fashion, represents the past year, and captures the imagination," said a press release.

Markle’s dress was chosen by Dazed magazine’s editor-in-chief, Ibrahim Kamara, and its art director, Gareth Wrighton. They said: “In today’s hyper-stylised pop culture, the Dress of the Year now has the potential to also be 'meme of the year' and we both latched upon Meghan and Harry’s now iconic interview with Oprah as the definitive anti-establishment moment that will forever endure in the British collective consciousness.

“Meghan’s wrap dress by Armani, worn to showcase a divine pregnancy, framed the Duchess in black against the bountiful landscaping of Tyler Perry’s Hollywood garden. This look now, through sheer association with a viral television moment, is firmly engrained in our pop culture psyche.”

Rosemary Harden, Fashion Museum Manager, said: "This is a fabulous addition to the Fashion Museum collection. There are moments in history that are all about the dress and Meghan’s interview with Oprah was just such an occasion. The softly structured Armani dress with beautiful appliquéd lotus flower motif was part of a carefully curated look, guaranteed to send messages, and to imprint itself in our consciousness time and time again. Thank you to Ibrahim and Gareth for this landmark selection for the Dress of the Year Collection, and to Armani for most generously gifting the dress to the Museum."

Councillor Dine Romero, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Communities and Culture at Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “We’re delighted that this iconic dress will be added to the Fashion Museum collection to represent a key moment of 2021. We look forward to seeing it on display at the Museum, where local residents and visitors will be able to admire it up-close.”

Meghan’s dress went on display February 22, 2022 at the museum, which is located in Bath’s historic Assembly Rooms building in Bath, England..

OSCAR WINNER SEAN PENN HAS BOOTS ON THE GROUND IN UKRAINE

Sean Penn attending a Presidential press conference in the Ukraine. Photo released by The Office of the President through the Ukrainian embassy.
Acror/activist Sean Penn has taken the personally dangerous, yet courageous step of being on the ground in Ukraine to film a documentary about Russia’s invasion. The Oscar-winning actor attended a press briefing Thursday in the Ukraine capital of Kyiv listening to government officials speak about the crisis.

The Penn documentary is a Vice Studios production in association with Vice World News and Endeavor Content.

Responding to months of rising tensions Penn previously visited the Ukraine in November 2021 beginning film preparations by meeting with the country’s military. Photos of Penn’s November trip were released at that time by the Ukrainian Joint Forces Operation Press Service.

"Penn has visited the Office of the President and spoken with deputy prime minister Iryna Vereshchuk, as well as local journalists and members of the Ukrainian military" since arriving in Ukraine this week, wrote Newsweek. The Office of the President issued a statement through the Ukrainian embassy praising the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker.

"The director specially came to Kyiv to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country," the statement’s translation reads."Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty."

The statement continues, "Sean Penn is demonstrating bravery that many others have been lacking, in particular some Western politicians. The more people like that - true friends of Ukraine, who support the fight for freedom - the quicker we can stop this heinous invasion by Russia."

Penn has been at the center of many anti-war and humanitarian operations over the years. The 2020 Discovery Plus documentary Citizen Penn recounted the actor’s efforts in setting up the non-profit organization Community Organized Relief Effort, also known as CORE, in response to the Haiti earthquakes of 2010. CORE also deployed teams to help with COVID-19 testing and vaccines across the country.

“Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he doesn’t relent, I believe Mr. Putin will have made a most horrible mistake for all of humankind,” Penn said in a statement released on Friday which he also posted on his Twitter account. “President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people have risen as historic symbols of courage and principle. Ukraine is the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams. If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost.”

Russia invaded Ukraine early Thursday in what it described as a "special military operation." The attacks came minutes after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the start of military operations after months of mounting tensions.

While announcing new economic sanctions against Russia on Thursday, US President Joe Biden accused Putin of wanting to reestablish the former Soviet Union, saying the conflict is "about naked aggression, about Putin's desire for empire by any means necessary."

FINAL OVATION

JOHN EDWARD SZELES AKA THE AMAZING JOHNATHAN died at his Las Vegas home Tuesday, February 22, 2022, after a long battle with cardiomyopathy, a degenerative disease that weakens the heart muscle. He was 63.

The Bally’s casino star attraction and Comedy Central staple - who reportedly earned $3 million a year at his peak -— was diagnosed in March 2007 with “a serious heart condition.”

The standup comic and magician who specialized in shocking audiences as "The Amazing Jonathan," called himself the "Freddy Kreuger of comedy."

His act mostly composed of hijinks, interaction with one specific audience member, and a few legitimate magic tricks. From 2001 to 2014, he was a year-round headliner in Las Vegas. Self-described as the "Freddy Krueger of Comedy",[2] Szeles performed wearing his ever-present headband, and his shows frequently used gore; for example, pretending to suck on his own hanging eyeball, cutting his wrists, and skewering his own tongue.

He gained further notoriety as the subject of a controversial 2019 Hulu documentary, The Amazing Johnathan Documentary. The film followed Szeles, then 60, as he mounted a comeback tour after defying his terminal illness diagnosis — and simultaneously dealing with an ongoing drug addiction.

He is survived by his wife sideshow stuntwoman Anastasia Synn.
