KEEPING COMPANY CURRENT

Patti LuPone steals the show in Company.
Company, a musical drama revival at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre, has managed to delightfully present what is a tricky prop - altering and updating a previously successful, award winning production (1971 Tony Award for Best Musical) which gave the world several well known songs.

Staging a re-tooled revival is a daunting task.

Director Marianne Elliott has managed to succeed in gender swapping this revival of the famed George Furth, Stephen Sondheim musical.

Bobbie, a single woman, is celebrating her 35th birthday. Surprise parties are generally not a good idea and Bobbi's friends have one in the works. Never mind that 35 is a terrifying age for a woman. Her biological clock is sounding the death knell for trouble free conception. Finding the love of her life? She might as well let an elephant dig her grave and jump in.

This version of Company relates to women. If it isn't you, it's somebody you know.

This effervescently smart production doesn't alter the music although new orchestrations by David Cullen and dance arrangements by Sam Davis and additional vocal arrangements by Joel Fram infuse a modern sound.

The musical favorites are there: You Could Drive a Person Crazy; Another Hundred People; Getting Married Today; Side By Side By Side; Being Alive and The Ladies Who Lunch number performed by Patti LuPone as inebriated Joanne - can stop the show. To say LuPone is a strong performer is a profound understatement.

Christopher Fitzgerlad as David, Christopher Sieber as Harry and Jennifer Simard as Sarah know how to deliver comedy without becoming cloying or annoying.

In addition to the a fore mentioned, the production stars a talented but miscast Katrina Lenk as Bobbie. Broadway To Vegas gave Lenk a rave review for her performance in The Band's Visit. See Broadway To Vegas column of November 19, 2017

Compny also features the powerful voice of Nikki Renée Daniels as Jenny, whose long list of credits includes recently portraying Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton in Chicago; Matt Doyle as Jamie who recently starred in the world premiere of the Huey Lewis musical The Heart of Rock & Roll at the Old Globe in San Diego and whose twitter philosophy is: "All views are mine and should be yours;" Bobby Conte as PJ who made his Broadway debut originating the role of Calogero in A Bronx Tale and asserts "I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious." Etai Benson as Adam. He's a graduate of North Carolina School of the Arts; Rashidra Scott as Susan received rave reviews starring in Goodspeed Musicals production of Ambassador of Love in which "all 21 Pearl Bailey songs become Rashidra Scott's without effort;" Manu Narayan as Theo, who served s a Trustee of Carnegie Mellon University, his alma mater, from 2013-2016; Greg Hidreth as Peter, whose extensive credits include Olaf in Frozen; Claybourne Elder as Andy who recently reunited with the stranger who gave him the money to buy a ticket to see the Broadway production of Sweeney Todd 15 years ago. That gift changed his life and Terence Archie as Larry. He made his Broadway debut in the 2010-Tony nominated production of Ragtime.

In this musical without a plot, a rapid series of vignettes with some including liquor and marijuana, has Bobbie meandering a labernath of crises. Switching Bobby to Bobbie gives the lead character more depth. Women's lives are more complicated. Bobbie ponders, muses, agonizes and frets over, analyzes, considers and rejeccts.

Ingenious Alice in Wonderland inspired scenery by Bunny Christie adds much to the enjoyment. Christie is also responsible for the costumes, including on the edge of hysterical creations for LuPone's character.

The production at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre can get a bit frenetic and one might relate or appreciate some vignettes more than others, but over all this is a lovely, inventive revival.

Go see and enjoy.

ART AND ABOUT

THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME has opened a new exhibition spotlighting the moments and movements that have kept fans engaged with their favorite basketball teams and artists. The new exhibition Baseline to Bassline: 75 Years of Music and the NBA, runs from February 17 through April 1.

“This timely exhibition illustrates the crossover between music and basketball and how, together, they have impacted the global cultural landscape,” said Greg Harris, President & CEO, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “We welcome fans from around the country to Cleveland to celebrate their teams, the players, and the power of rock & roll during NBA All-Star Weekend and beyond.”

The exhibit includes custom casework constructed from pieces of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball court and wooden locker room lockers used by Cavaliers coaches. Amplifying the display, the Cavaliers provided unique items such as five-time All-Star Brad Daugherty’s jersey, players’ shoes, and City Edition rock & roll-themed uniform shorts.

The experience begins with a look at the cultural impact of the sport. It takes fans back to music and language pioneer Cab Calloway as you explore his Hepster’s Dictionary and zoot suit worn in Janet Jackson’s Alright video, spotlighting hip-hop's origins and the beginning of basketball as entertainment with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Artifacts worn or used by players and artists at NBA events and promos are on display, such as will.i.am’s outfit from the Black Eyed Peas’ 2004 NBA All-Star Game "Let’s Get It Started" promo. You can also get up close with artists’ bling and get a glimpse into the sneaker culture’s longstanding relationship with the music scene with Air Jordans worn by Chuck D and a pair worn by Kelis in her Milkshake video.

Then, get pumped for All-Star Weekend as you explore songs that capture the essence and attitude of the NBA and provide the energy of being in the stand at a game, including songs by Inductees with current and former NBA players.

The exhibition also nods to the Rock Hall’s It’s Be Said All Along: Voices of Rage, Hope & Empowerment exhibit, highlighting how musicians, basketball players, and the industry have responded to social injustice, using their voices and actions to influence and inspire the nation.

DOWNTON ABBEY: THE EXHIBITION is now extending its stay in Atlanta, Georgia due to popular demand, allowing fans and movie lovers alike to brush up on their Crawley family facts and experience the show in a completely immersive way before the sequel to the award-winning film series hits theaters on May 20, 2022.

Within The Exhibition, the iconic rooms from the grand home of Downton Abbey are recreated, including Mrs. Patmore’s kitchen and the striking dining room, which visitors can explore alongside their favorite characters. At the same time, visitors can marvel at official costumes, artifacts, and other never-before-seen elements and footage from the series. There is also a historical component, including videos, signage, and other interactive features that educate fans about the post-Edwardian period in which the series takes place, and now moves closer to the start of the modern world in the 1930s, where the movie picks back up.

THE HONOLULU MUSEUM OF ART (HoMA) will present the work of 14 artists and collectives in partnership with Hawai‘i Contemporary as part of Hawai‘i Triennial 2022 (HT22), Pacific Century – E Ho‘omau no Moananuiakea.

The exhibition will bring together artists from across the Asia Pacific region to Honolulu for a citywide celebration of contemporary art from February 18 through May 8, 2022. HoMA’s presentation will include new installations from 18 emerging and established artists (some working as collectives) in a variety of gallery spaces throughout the museum.

Unique to HoMA will be a site-specific installation by leading artist and social innovator Theaster Gates (b. 1973), who lives and works in Chicago. Gates’s gallery installation for HoMA will include tarred ceramic vessels, a vitrine intervention and film presented in conversation with the museum’s historic Japanese collection. Gates’s work highlights the collaborative and spiritual process of the Asian ceramic tradition and reveals its connections and influence on the artist’s own career.

In addition to Gates’s project, HoMA’s Triennial presentation will feature the work of the following artists: Ai Iwane, Ed Greevy and Haunani-Kay Trask, Masanori Handa, Yuree Kensaku, Sung Hwan Kim and David Michael DiGregorio, Liu Xiaodong, ?mé (Haruka Kojin, Kenji Minamigawa and Hirofumi Masui), Shinro Ohtake, Mika Tajima, Dan Taulapapa McMullin, Xu Bing, Chikako Yamashiro and Lawrence Seward.

"HoMA’s interpretation of the overarching Triennial themes centers on the Pacific Ocean as a connective body for cross cultural exchange," said Director of Curatorial Affairs Catherine Whitney. "These artists and collectives explore ideas of Pacific culture, ecology, social change and Indigenous voices. They underline the museum’s commitment to presenting art of our time and place and offering an ever-broadening array of global practices and approaches."

HT22 is curated by curatorial director Dr. Melissa Chiu (director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.), in collaboration with associate curators Dr. Miwako Tezuka (associate director of the Reversible Destiny Foundation in New York) and Drew Kahu‘aina Broderick (director of Koa Gallery, Kapiolani Community College in Honolulu).

KAT VON D’s GOTHIC MANSION
This "Cheaper By The Dozen House" could be yours.
could be yours. Best known for her TLC reality show LA Ink, which chronicled her work as a tattoo artist and tattoo studio owner, Kat Von D is a multi-faceted star. A model, recording artist, New York Times bestselling author, animal rights campaigner, and entrepreneur, the Mexican-born Kat is famous for her gothic style. In 2016, she paid $6.5 million for the LA mansion which served as the set for 2003’s family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen and completely remodeled it, featuring a black-and-gold mirrored bathroom, blood-red pool, secret door, and an abundance of stained-glass windows and ornate fireplaces, to suit her unique aesthetic. In recent months, Kat has closed her LA studio, High Voltage Tattoo, and announced a move to Indiana to spend more time with her family. Her spectacular, distinctive home has now been listed for sale at $15 million.

The three-story Victorian mansion was originally built in the 1890s by Isaac Newton Van Nuys, who once owned the entire southern portion of the San Fernando Valley and for whom the city of Van Nuys is named. With striking red brick and turrets, the magical estate is completely gated and sits on over half an acre of manicured grounds with maze-like gardens and fountains. The blood-red swimming pool flanked by classical statues makes for an impressive statement piece, with plenty of patio space for entertaining.

The sprawling main residence offers 12,565 square feet, eleven bedrooms and eight-and-a-half baths. The grand salon connects seamlessly to the library, den, formal living and sitting rooms. The dining room is lined with linenfold paneling and stained-glass windows and connects to the fully renovated chef-quality kitchen. A hidden bar with hand-carved walls conceals a secret door that leads out to the pool and spa.

Every room in the house has been carefully styled, with intricate woodwork and ornate details. One bedroom suite features a custom-painted, bat-themed mural and fireplace, one of seven throughout the residence. The top floor provides a special living space that doubles as a theater with a bar and kitchenette. The stage is complete with original footlights and a dramatic turret side room. The home’s systems are modern and updated, including the multi-zone HVAC system, painstakingly installed without disturbing the intricate original wood and plaster work. The estate also includes a two-bedroom, two-bath carriage house above the garage.

The listing is held by Jamie Sher of The Sher Group.

DETAINED written by France-Luce Benson.

Directed by Mark Valdez.

The Ensemble: Liana Aráuz, Christine Avila, Will Dixon, Yumarie Morales, Jan Munroe, Theo Perkins, Marlo Su, Michael Uribes.

Originally commissioned by immigration attorney Judy Rabinovitz of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, Detained is based on interviews with longtime U.S. residents held in immigration detention, and with their family members, advocates, attorneys and representatives of ICE. Inspired by their stories, Detained explores how families fight to stay together as increasingly cruel U.S. immigration legislation keeps them apart through mass deportations and immigration detention centers. It offers a heart-wrenching and in-depth look at the human lives behind the policies, and celebrates the strength and determination of the ordinary people who must fight against an unjust system while keeping their hope and faith in humanity intact.

“All of the stories in this play are true, and they are heartbreaking,” says Benson. “The more people I met, the more time I spent with them, the more important it became to tell their stories. When you go through trauma, you want to be seen, to be given a voice. My own family immigrated to America in the 1970s, and my father received a humanitarian award for the work he did at Krome Detention Center in the ’80s and ’90s. This is his story too, and a way for me to honor the sacrifices he made for us.”

The creative team includes scenic designer Sarah Krainin; lighting designer Christian V. Mejia; composer and sound designer Marc Antonio Pritchett; media designer Matt Soson; and costume designer Jeanette Godoy. Movement choreography is by Annie Yee. The production stage manager is Anna Kupershmidt.

The Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles presents the world premiere of Detained, written by 2021 Lorraine Hansberry Award-winning playwright France-Luce Benson and directed by Mark Valdez, winner of the 2021 Zelda Fichandler Award, opens February 19 at the Fountain Theatre. Performances will continue through April 10 with three public previews taking place February 16 through February 18, 2022.
