ART AND ABOUT

CAMILLA, THE DUCHESS OF CORNWALL
Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall viewing the shirt worn by Colin Firth when he played Mr. Darcy in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice commenting: "But he's not in it, that's a bit sad." Photo: utube.
visited the former home of author Jane Austen at Chawton in Hampshire, southeast England. The cottage was Austen's home in the last eight years of her life and is where she wrote all six of her beloved novels.

An appeal was launched in 2020 to save the Austen house in Chawton, Hampshire.

Austen lived at the home - from 1809 until her death in 1817 - with her mother and sister, both called Cassandra, and friend Martha Lloyd.

The duchess heard about the roof restoration, involving reclaimed, handmade clay roof tiles installed by specialist contractors and had followed the progress on Austen's former home.

Camilla was treated to a tour of the museum property by director Lizzie Dunford who said it was a "privilege" to show the duchess around the home - started the tour in the drawing room, where she viewed a precious first edition of Pride and Prejudice. The author had read aloud from her personal copy of Pride and Prejudice the day before its publication in 1813.

The wife of Prince Charles also saw the dining room, where Austen's writing table remains as well as first editions of novels and two of her letters.

The shirt worn by actor Colin Firth in the BBC adaption of Pride and Prejudice is also on display at the museum.

The duchess left no secret that she was a fan of the BBC's 1995 adaptation. She appeared delighted to see his infamous white shirt displayed alongside other examples of Regency underwear from TV and film adaptations. One of the most famous scenes was when Firth emerged from a lake in the wet garment following a swim. "But he's not in it, that's a bit sad," Camilla joked, according to news outlets.

Camilla, who is a passionate reader, recently named Austen's protagonist Elizabeth Bennett as "a heroine of mine" while picking five literary characters to join her for a dinner party.

Afterwards Camilla visited the new Southampton center of Maggie's, a charity which supports cancer patients and their families. She opened the center, which is based in the grounds of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

is a new large-scale, site-specific installation by internationally renowned Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist. The immersive video installation is the artist’s first in the Middle East.

This exhibition contains flashing lights that may cause discomfort and/or trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy and other conditions with sensitivity to light.

Curated by Tom Eccles and Bouthayna Baltaji, the installation invites visitors to embark on a journey of self-discovery through a multisensory experience that inspires introspection and awe. Your Brain to Me, My Brain to You symbolizes humanity’s collective unconscious and the power of the mind.

A key feature of the installation is the “pixels” that comprise 12,000 LED lights strung on cables throughout the gallery for visitors to navigate. Representing neurons, constantly firing and communicating with each other, the pulsing resin-encased bulbs have been programmed in choreography with a soundscape and video installation featuring abstract footage of Qatar’s landscapes.

As they make their way through the exhibit, visitors are encouraged to turn off their personal devices and prepare to experience the journey fully, shifting their focus towards activating different senses.

“This work is both a collective and individual experience. We want to understand what is happening inside the brain of the other, and culture is the main way to try to understand each other beyond language. “Pipilotti Rist.

Aetist Acknowledgments - "Pipilotti Rist works with a lovely team of specialists, some of whom she has collaborated with for many years. The project lead and designer of Your Brain to Me, My Brain to You is Kaori Kuwabara, a light designer based in Zurich. She has developed the prototype, the technical concept of the work and is responsible for programming, production and installation. In the studio in Zurich, Nike Dreyer, and Dave Lang are steering the boat, and on the video side Danielle Küchler Flores and Victoria Holdt are a professional joy to work with."

SWEET CHARITY

THE LATIN GRAMMY CULTURAL FOUNDATION
Lin-Manuel Miranda
in partnership with Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, donated musical instruments valued at $40,000 to George Washington Educational Campus in Washington Heights, New York.

The donation was part of the first live, in-person Latin Grammy In The School educational program since 2020, and featured a conversation and performance in honor of Miranda. A Q&A with students moderated by award-winning Broadway actress and television personality Bianca Marroquín followed.

Eight-hundred enthusiastic music students from George Washington Educational Campus received the surprise of a lifetime when Miranda arrived to watch their performance of We Don’t Talk About Bruno and the Oscar-nominated single Dos Oruguitas, written by Miranda for the Oscar-winning Disney animated feature film, Encanto.

"We live in a world with little room for creativity, and the arts allow our students to explore their creative brilliance and limitless possibilities," said Zulaika Velázquez, Artistic Director & Teaching Artist at George Washington Educational Campus. "We are incredibly grateful and honored by the generous donation from the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, Ford Motor Company Fund, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Welcome to our theater family!"

The performing arts program at George Washington Educational Campus was launched by Velázquez in 2015, in partnership with former principal Juan Villar. Together, they saw a unique opportunity to leverage musical theater as a holistic learning tool where students would cultivate performance skills in a safe space and develop their confidence, learn and improve fluency in English, and gain a better understanding of complex subject matters in a creative and immersive environment. The program has continued to grow thanks to the incredible support of the new administration and current principal, Sofia Russo.

Their vision includes plans for built-in music and TV studios at George Washington Educational Campus which are nearing completion. Over the last seven years, Velázquez and her students have been hard at work bringing productions to life. As a result of their efforts, the program will be expanding this fall to include a teacher who will focus on dance and choreography that has been in place since 2015 but did not have a full-time teacher. Willi Mena, the new teacher and choreographer, has been collaborating with Velázquez for years in other productions. Over the course of the next school year, each department will work together to execute new productions. The theater department will focus on the acting company of characters, the technical theater department will develop lighting and set design, the music school will master the score and the dance department will center on the choreography. In the future, the program aims to also incorporate a costume department.

Since the beginning of the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation's partnership with Ford Motor Company Fund in 2014, more than 28,660 students have benefited from donations exceeding $560,000 worth of musical instruments to schools in U.S. cities such as Aransas Pass, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and New York; as well as internationally in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Mexico City, Mexico; Arecibo, Humacao, Yauco, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

On April 20, Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, CA will host the 6th annual National Jewish Theater Foundation Holocaust Theater International Initiative - Remembrance Readings with The Diary of Anne Frank - a reading by the JFed Players, presented by the Jewish Federation of Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys.

This reading commemorates the week of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) April 27-28, which will honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. Their collective goal is to keep alive the memories, stories, and must-never-be-forgotten lessons with theater serving as a moral compass for future generations.

SPREADING THE WORD

CONOR MCGREGOR
Conor McGregor
the former featherweight and lightweight world championhas appeared in Blanchardstown District Court (Dublin) on April 7, 2022 for six traffic offenses which took place last month. The 33-year-old arrived to the court in his Rolls Royce and with his security detail.

He was first charged with two offenses; driving a 2019 D registered Bentley Continental in a manner that was dangerous or likely to be dangerous to the public at two locations on March 22, 2022. He was further charged with four additional road traffic offenses.

Judge David McHugh remanded Mr McGregor on continuing bail to appear again at Blanchardstown District Court on June 23, 2022 to plead to the charges or contest them, a date will be set for trial. McGregor did not speak during the brief hearing.

Conor McGregor raked in the moola in 2020 and 2021 to become the world's highest-paid athlete.

Shortly before the 2021 UFC 264 trilogy fight between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor, Dana White used Instagram to preview one of ESPN‘s features on what a McGregor fight does for the city of Las Vegas.

In the clip, several Vegas resorts such as the Red Rock Casino and Circa Resorts are interviewed and compare Conor’s fights to massive events like the Super Bowl or March Madness.

"There’s so much traffic in the city for a McGregor fight that Red Rock’s suites can climb up to $6,000 USD a night, where only guests with a credit line north of $250,000 USD, or A-list celebrities can book. Getting into the city is also a nightmare as the Federal Aviation Administration requires special notices at the private airport due to the number of private jets attempting to land. The nightlife scene also sees a surge in business as Derek Stevens of Circa Resorts comments that the bars are just as busy at 4 p.m. as they are at 4 a.m."

PRINCE CHARLES EVER THE GENTLEMAN
Prince Charles and Camilla (center) with the cast of EastEnders.
while he didn't drape his coat over a mud puddle, the Prince of Wales did offer it to EastEnders star Letitia Dean after he noticed she was cold, during a visit he and his wife Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, made to the set of EastEnders.

The royal couple visited the set of EastEnders to meet the cast and crew of the long-running popular BBC drama, which premiered in 1985, as they filmed a special scene connected to his mother, Queen Elizabeth. In that scene the residents of Albert Square are celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee at a street party, just as those around the nation will be celebrating Queen Elizabeth's milestone in June.

During their visit, Charles and Camilla met and chatted with the cast, including Gillian Taylforth, who has appeared on every show since the first episode, and deaf actress Rose Ayling-Ellis, who plays Frankie Lewis, and competed on Strictly Come Dancing (the U.K. version of Dancing with the Stars!). Camilla even disclosed that the royal family watched, rooting for Ayling-Ellis on the reality series.

Charles unexpectedly shared his knowledge of the show's story-lines when he talked about how one of EastEnders' beloved couples are no longer together. "Today was a very special day for all at EastEnders. As a company, we are all incredibly proud of the show we make but to have a visit from the royal family makes it all the more special," according to Dean on The EastEnders official Twitter account.

"To have the opportunity to mark the Queen's upcoming Platinum Jubilee with a visit from The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall was just beautiful and it will go down in EastEnders history but it was made all the more special for me when The Prince of Wales handed me his coat to keep me warm – what a gentleman, what a couple, what as we say in EastEnders a proper family," Dean added.

Executive producer, Chris Clenshaw, commented: "We at EastEnders are all so incredibly grateful that The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall came to visit EastEnders as we filmed our special episode that shows the residents of Albert Square celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, just as those around the country will be doing this summer."

"We cannot thank them enough for taking the time to come to Walford, this is one moment that will go down in EastEnders history as we all celebrate 70 years of Her Majesty's reign. Today was truly an honor."

They toured Albert Square on the BBC Elstree set before meeting the soap’s cast and crew.

Ayling-Ellis also presented Camilla with a bouquet of flowers, adding that it was an "honor" to meet the duchess.

After the meet-and-greet, the actress said: “It was really funny because she’s a huge fan of Strictly Come Dancing and she mentioned that she voted for me which is so lovely, and her grandchildren watch it.

“It is amazing, so lovely. I mean come on, its the Royal Family voting for me, sometimes you forget how many people watch the show, I am mind-blown.”

During the meet-and-greet, Camilla told actress Gillian Taylforth, who plays Kathy Beale, that she used to watch her on EastEnders when it first aired.

Taylforth told the press: “She said we were a lot younger then, and that it’s nice to see the old faces. I said I was in it for 15 years and then left and came back from the dead.

Brian Conley, who plays Tom Cotton/Terry Cant in the soap, was wearing a union jack suit in honor of the Queen’s jubilee.

After speaking with Camilla, the show posted him saying: "I explained I am wearing a nylon costume and she said she had handwarmers inside her gloves and didn’t want to shake my hand too hard in case I caught on fire with all the static, which was very funny.

"It’s not like they dashed in and dashed out, they spent much time here meeting everyone, not just in front of the camera but behind."

Danny Dyer, who plays Mick Carter in the show, also met Camilla, explaining that he will be exiting the show after nine years.

"I used to make movies before moving into soapland, but I’m leaving this year. Maybe I will come back, who knows," he added.

Camilla asked Dyer about his exit storyline, to which he coyly replied: "Tune in, it’s going to be a big one."

After meeting with Charles, Natalie Cassidy, who plays Sonia Fowler, said that he was "so personable and lovely".

"I said I’ve been here for a long time, since 1993, 29 years on and off, and he said, 'Oh wow, how amazing' and he said: 'You were so small, how did you feel when you got here?'

"I just said sometimes it’s easier being 10, you don’t really know what you’re coming into, and we had a bit of a laugh and he was really, really lovely.

"Camilla, she actually came over and made a beeline to me to say, 'I know you, you’ve been in it a long time haven’t you?' so that was really sweet.

'They were very interested in all aspects and I think that is what’s amazing about them, they make every conversation seem fresh," she added. Tameka Empson, who plays character Kim Fox, added that Charles commented on the feather boa she was wearing, and asked: 'What happened to the chicken?'

MESSIAH ON GOOD FRIDAY Experience Handel's finest work with the return of this beloved Easter tradition. Friday, April 15 at Royl Albert Hall in London.
